In 1836 an English Lord called Lord Bentinck owned a colt called Elis who he fancied for the triple crown. However, Elis lost the 2000 Guineas to another colt called Bay Middleton, who also went on to win the Derby and was a hot favourite to win the Leger.
Lord Bentinck liked a bet though and really fancied his colt for the Leger. However the bookies of the day wouldn't lay him a big enough price so he put out info that the horse wouldn't be travelling to Doncaster. Unfortunately the bookies didn't bite and refused to lengthen the price. In those days most racing was local horses only because it took days and days to get a horse to any race (most were actually ridden there by the owner) so the bookies knew that as long as Elis was in his field in London then he wouldn't be able to get to Doncaster in time for the Leger. And eventually the day came when there was no possible way that Elis could get to the Leger in time and still win the race. The bookies lengthened the price to one more agreeable to Bentinck, and he and his cohorts smashed it! What the bookies didn't know was that Bentinck had devised arguably one of the greatest coups of all time - he built a windowless carriage in which Elis was carried from London to Doncaster by a team of pack horses. The horse arrived fresh as a daisy in Doncaster, won the Leger, and the horse-box was invented. IMO racing is no more corrupt now than it was 175 years ago |
