Diamond Harry - gold cup

I've been backing him for this for a year now.  In to 26 yesterday when the KS news broke, but now out to a long looking 65, so perhaps a few probs at home for him also...which wouldn't be much of a surprise!

Doesn't like Cheltenham and needs soft ground. Poor performances so far this year. If he was mine I'd skip Cheltenham and look at Aintree.

Flat track horse, autumn horse, very hard to get right and nowhere near good enough based on performances since he came back from injury.

All races this year has travelled well then finished poorly. At cheltenham in Jan he was really struggling to breathe if you watch it back, or at least it looked that way to my untrained eye. If the op has done the trick he has the class to be involved as an e/w bet. Can't see him winning though.

I just mean the way his head was held in comparison to earlier in the rest...just looked like he was struggling to breathe.

He's good enough and he's got the class but his form on good ground in the spring wouldn't inspire me. If you go back to his Hennessy win, Burton Port couldn't live with him but I think he may be better put away for next year and entered for the Hennessy. Also fast enough to win a Champion Chase like One Man.

he just aint good enough,has absolutely no form thay puts him anywhere near winning a gold cup.

h'mm, must say I'm surprised at some of those comments...has won in March twice, has won at Cheltenham twice, beaten Burton Port in the Hennessy and at Haydock giving him a stone,was the only horse to be able to lay up with KS a tHaydock this season...here's hoping that he blew up because of the breathing problem

If Burton Port's good enough to win a Gold Cup, and he's third favourite, then Diamond Harry has to be. The problem is his form this season but that could be rectified by a breathing operation. The 2 races he won in March were that bumper which he won twice at Newbury I think.

Burton Port is still short of whats required,but what he has shown this season is improvement after a long lay off.DH has shown no such thing this season and has not run well enough to be touted as a GC contender.
Just because DH beat BP ages ago does not mean he has just as much chance as BP in the GC.

now thats another point Buddeliea, and unfortunately I tend to agree with you...this season has not gone as planned.

Just another thought on Burton Port, and it relates very much to Diamond Harry in terms of the value of his form, as quite a small horse there is every chance that the course at Newbury isn't really suitable for BP as it suits big strong galloping types.  In that case he may well improve quite a bit just for returning to Cheltenham.

Surely Cheltenham suits galloping types more than any other? Newbury is quite a fair course that suits most types IMO; more so than Chelt anyway.

No way Glossy, Cheltenham's undulations slow the pace down quite a bit which makes it harder for a big horse to keep it's rhythm.  Not so much so as the sharp turns of say the Mildmay course at Aintree but still doesn't compare to the giant oval tracks like Newbury and Doncaster.

I think you overplay it somewhat. The Tue/Wed course is far more of a tight, turning, undulating track. The Gold Cup course suits galloping types. I do agree that Newbury is even more pronounced in that respect but I have to point out that this being the case will probably be more than offset in BP's case by the fact that as a small horse he isn't going to enjoy carrying 10lbs more in the gold cup.

I'd certainly far rather take a chance on him bouncing than back Diamond Harry though.

Diamond Harry imo is a horse that people latched on to in his novice hurdle days,where he was winning impressively and RUK in particular were raving about him.
Since then apart from the Hennessey win he has largely disappointed,but some of those latchers are still hanging on,and imo they need to let go,and certainly at Cheltenham which really dont suit him.

Diamond Harry's chances of making the Gold Cup field look slim after owner Paul Duffy revealed that his injury-prone chaser has a leg infection.

Duffy said: ‘He is being treated with poultices. We haven’t given up on running but it is only fair to let everyone know.’

Should be aimed at the ryanair anyway.
