I couldn't help but be impressed with New Years Eve yesterday. I think he has to be a real live contender for the Champion Bumper at 12/1. Any thoughts?

Royal Guardsman for me. Very taken by his run on Saturday. 15s currently I believe
Report strontium February 20, 2012 5:21 PM GMT
So was I mike - that looked like a well above average bumper and they must rate him for bumpers to have kept him in that discipline.
Report Brian February 20, 2012 5:30 PM GMT
The problem with the Bumper is that there will be a dozen with similar impressive performances prior to this race. Both mentioned here would be among those together with Moscow Mannon.

WEATHERBYS CHAMPION BUMPER and what they said.........

Philip Hobbs - Village Vic will probably run but he wouldn’t be as good as Cheltenian who won it last year. He is going the right way.

Nick Williams - Horatio Hornblower will be entered and if he is full of himself and looks well in his coast I would go for it. If he can improve a 3-4 lengths then we are in the mix but he would need good-to-soft or slower to run. Nick Williams said Horatio Hornblower was nice horse and would run, if the going had “soft” in it

Andrew King likes New Years Eve and Population

Paul Jones said that the top BHA rated horse on the flat do run well in this race, and Moscow Mannon would be the horse backed on the day

Ruby liked the bumper at newbury few weeks ago that Shutthefrontdoor won, said it rode like a very good race

Tom Segal - Village vic

Davy Russell - Will be an english trained winner, likes Royal Guardsman. Do not back New Years Eve as the sire is rubbish. An English horse should win it such as Royal Guardsman. The best Irish horses are not running in the race.

Jim McGrath - New years eve

Jessica Harrington - Jetski if all goes well when it runs this weekend. Maybe Moscow Mannon.

Paddy Power - Moscow Mannon

Ruby Walsh - Maybe Village Vic.

Colm Murphy - The New One, trained by Nigel Twisten Davis.

Donn McClean - No opinion. In fact no one had a strong opinion.

Ted Walsh jr isn’t keen on Moscow Mannon, sweated up last week at a (after race spin?). Won’t handle the pressure of the festival. In an open event, Clonbanan Lad for him at the prices.

Kevin O’Ryan – the Mullins bumper horses this year are just not to the same level of the others in the field.

Again, the feeling that the English based trainers could have this between them. Pretty much, a steer clear of this one.

Willie Mullins - Best chance is probably Champagne Fever.
Report Minger March 6, 2012 6:24 PM GMT
A lot of hype in the race .....what you want is an English horse who is tough and has shown he has the class....Sir Johnson will just keep going up that hill.

although he has won impressively moscaw mannion has not beaten one quality horse in his three wins, infact if you look at the 3rd placed horses in his most recent wins, fairy rath beaten 30 lengths off 111 at newbury last week and casablanca lily beaten nearly 20 lengths at thurles last week, there is no substance to hhis form , in fact how many winners have emerged from those 3 races won by moscow mannion, very few. also how many horses have won this bumper with as many as four previous bumper runs?.

Report differentdrum March 7, 2012 9:45 PM GMT
Don't know why people are still tipping Irish Horses - even the Irish on these panels are tipping the English horses. Clonbanon Lad should make a nice three mile novice on soft/heavy ground next year.

Population look top drawer when last seen at Ascot in November.Found all sorts of trouble in running, though the Racing Post comments in running dont state this, and still won has he like.Dont like the fact that he aint been lefthanded yet,and hasn't had a run for quite a while, but twice the price of New Years Eve,Fergusons other intended runner. Jockey arrangements will be interesting, and I will probably be backing both on the day

i remember kilbrittain castle winning his bumper for michael hourigan first time out  at limerick in the early 70s  i stood in the cheltenham ring in 1995 and told no less than barney that dato star was a certainty and he duly obliged  but no horse has impressed me more than  new years eve . tremendous turn of foot. i have backed him at 12/1 and i expect him to start at 9/2 on the day. i am very confident but one system i always operate is to have a small saver on the stable second string population. theres no greater sickener imo than your fancy running like a drain and the stable winning with the second string

Trainer/jockey Mikey O'Connor, who steered his 300th point to point winner today at Dromahane, intends running his Clonbanan Lad in the Cheltenham Bumper on Wednesday, providing the ground doesn't dry out further.
O'Connor said “I'm leaving tonight with Clonbanan Lad to go to Cheltenham for the Bumper on Wednesday - at the moment he runs, but won't run if the ground dries out further.”

Been going through the form of this again and I have gone off my original plan to back John Ferguson's horses, whichever he ran. Population NR and the 4 yr old stat has put me off New Years Eve,probably live to regret it. The word im getting from Ireland is that Moscow Mannon is unbeatable, but I keep coming back to Peter Bowens horse.I can't remember when he last had a winner,or indeed one that has run well, but this Sir JohnsonsAintree form from October looks different gravey.
He beat Royal Guardsman, who is 2nd/3rd fav for this,8 lenghts and giving him 7lb.Talkonthestreet who was 2nd in that race beaten 3 lenghts in receipt of a stone, has gone on to prove himself a very useful hurdler. As Tony57 has stated maybe Sir Johnson is being overlooked, maybe because of trainer form or maybe because he hasn't been seen for so long.
His twice the price of Royal Guardsman and if you could be confident he was going to turn up fit & well,he would be a major play in this event
Report pedrobob March 14, 2012 1:36 AM GMT
village vic time in Newbury listed bumper compared very well with 2 hurdles from which a number run well since (Zarkandar, Montbazon, Vulcanite, Sire De Grugy etc)

He looks big price around 18 on here in what doesn't look a strong renewal
Report Viva Pataca March 14, 2012 9:26 AM GMT
Don't know much about times and speed figures but encouraging to see Pedrobob put up Village Vic. The form of his Newbury race looks the strongest of any Bumper. Shutthefrontdoor and Gevrey Chambertin who he split are both highly thought of, too highly thought of to be risked in this race. Horatio Hornblower re-opposes and Vrai Vert is probably one of the best Bumper horses in the top stable. Village Vic is well over-priced.
Report Pinza March 14, 2012 12:07 PM GMT
The Newbury race hasn't got a good record in Champion.
Ericht (last year) and Aldanito were two beaten Bumper favourites.
Mr Markham, Cornish Rebel, Witicha Lineman, Karanja, were other well fancied contenders that all failed to place over the years and the only one to run well was Al Ferof when 2nd two years ago.
Report Pinza March 14, 2012 12:10 PM GMT
You also have top condsider that Jonjo O'Neill ran two winners of Newbury race in Champion and neither placed
That's probably why Shutthefronfdoor wasn't considered good enougth to run.
Report Pinza March 14, 2012 12:10 PM GMT
