Best Cheltenham lesson I ever learned was an absolute shocker of a bet.
It was in the 2009 Cross-country Chase, and for some ridiculous reason, I felt the 50-1 chance Dreux had the ability to run a big race. I backed him at huge triple-figure prices on here and as the odds were so huge the thrill of a sensational win pushed me to having almost twice what I would normally have on a horse, even at the Festival.
To my credit I tried to lay the bet back at big odds but predictably Dreux started at the back and became progressively more remote as the race went on. I got about a tenner of my cash back. And the saddest part of this story is that I was very pleased to get that paltry sum...
Never, ever again. Thankfully, am much more disciplined now.

Mr.Eboue - the really bad ones have drained me and I'm still that miserable about them. I've lost my humour and just can't see the funny side.
£1 E/W Lucky 15 and I backed;
3rd Fleet Street 33/1 (EP, SP was 20) WON Well Chief 11/1 (I think I beat the 9/1) WON Forked Lightning 9/1 (15/2 SP)
and Merchant's Friend was the last one and I'd got 28/1 15 lengths clear and a great jump at the last, but was bummed on the line by a Pipe rag called Maximize that I ALWAYS backed!
When push comes to shove, my final leg always takes it in the arse

2 years ago I did the 4 supposed good things in a big Lucky 15 and also had at least £1,000 on each as a single.
Dunguib - 3rd. Master Minded - 4th. Big Buck's - WON. Kauto Star - Fell.
And despite doing this bet several weeks before the Festival, I didn't even beat the SP on a couple of them (not that it mattered much).
