Can we get a discussion going on this race which may be one of a few where ante post value remains. If you have a fancy or some knowledge of running plans please stick them in here.

I was looking at the market and there are two that stand out to my eye: Chaptoturgeon (10/1 best price) & Barber's Shop (best 20/1)

The former won at the Festival and Barbers Shop was second in the Paddy Power to Imperial Commander no less. Both classy sorts imo. I see Backstage is a fairly short priced favourite but he is not a horse I have ever liked and I would be against him at a single figure price

What say you?

l've got Backstage at 14/1 so l'm quite happy with my position in this race at the moment. For me neither Barbers Shop or Chaporturgeon have ever looked like getting 3m 2f so l would be against them. Monkerty Tunkerty won an important trial at Warwick quite impressively under his lady owner/trainer/rider.

My Flora was the most interesting UK pointer l was looking forward to seeing this year due to his/her reputation. Personally l think it could be heading over to Ireland again this year as they look to have a couple of nice pointers and nothing in the UK has come to the fore so far.

well the price you have is probably alright for Backstage

but I can't agree about Barber Shop staying 3 mile 2 f as he managed to be 4th in a Hennessey off 156 behind the mighty Denman (which is 19lb higher than Backstage ever won off btw) and ran to a mark of 159 when 7th in the Gold Cup. That sort of form would be more than good enough to see him win this. The problem I have is whether he will actually turn up.

Chapoturgeon may well have some stamina doubts but he is a classy sort having run a RPR 154 when winning at the Festival and I prefer both of these to Monkerty Tunkerty (1 chase under rules)

Not sure when entries are but as long as the horse if fit it will run. Opened at 33s after the Warwick win but now as low as 14s.

Last years well backed favourite On The Fringe is entered in the hunter chase at Leopardstown at the weekend, that race is usually the strongest Irish trial.

Entries are Feb 28th. Re Munkerty Tunkerty, the owner/trainer/jockey (same person) said "straight to Cheltenham" when interviewed after the race at Warwick.

shando.....I know someone who is a relative of the trainer.  Warwick was a test to see if he could be cheltenham standard.  All systems go for Cheltenham at the moment (fingers crossed no problems), a definate intended runner.
This is a mother trainer/owner, daughter jockey set up and would be a great cheltenham fairytale for them.

Beware qualification rules!

all entries must have finished first or second twice in Hunter Chases under rules, or won two open point-to-point races, or won one open point-to-point race and finished first or second in a Hunter Chase since 1 December, 2007.

If more than 24 horses are declared to run, priority will be given to horses which have run in Steeple Chases and Hunter Chases under the rules of racing. On this basis, horses that have qualified through point-to-points can still run in a Steeple Chase or Hunter Chase up to and including Friday, 12 March, to enhance the chance of gaining a place in the final field. The BHA Head of Handicapping will assess the order of elimination, but does have the right to guarantee a place in the line up for one ‘wild card’, should he so wish.

Barbers shop entered in 2 hunter chases on Tuesday @ folkestone and on Wednesday @ Kelso. The race at folkestone looks a good race with Richard Barber entering both Chapoturgeon and Gwanako.

yes but reached 150+ ratings several times, came 4th in a Hennessey, 7th in a Gold Cup and 2nd to Imperial Commander in a Paddy Power - very strong form for Hunter Chasers

Thought Herons Well was travelling well in this last year when unseating and particularly unlucky to be brought down in the Aintree Foxhunters.  Plan has been to return for another tilt at this, though abandoned meetings have put paid to a seasonal reappearance a couple of times already (including tomorrow).  Could be of interest for me at decent prices.

Agree ono......had him last year and was gutted when he went down, but has been obe of those 'nearly' horses too many times.  Still worth a nibble in this at those prices as he will be shorter on the day.....just needs to get there

Did not mean to be insensitive Martin pipe returns.

But from an early age Barbers Shop flattered to deceive. He was talented alright, one year cruising just before the home straight in The King George going as well as Kauto Star!

Let's hope the "hunting fields" have made a man of him.

its all relative

some of his rivals in this race would have been lapped in many of the races he was asked to compete in

KG, Gold Cup, Hennessey, Paddy Power...

some of these , like monkerty tunkerty, have had 1 run under rules or have only ever run in class 3 handicaps and hunter chases

so mind how you go slagging the horse - he was simply outclassed in those races but still produced form far superior to most, if not all, of these entries

i agree with sax on this one.
yes he has run in top races, and yes ran well in them.

but i question his will to win.  not sure he wants to

Indeed, the form is rock solid for this type of race. (foxhunter)
Watch the replays of the races you mentioned.

KG already spoken about.
Hennesy  I thought he was a right non stayer before & opposed him.  To my surprise travelled like a dream between 2&3 out found zero when the winner went on yet plugged on past Niche Market (Irish National winner)for a place.

This horse is a complete ... in my book.

put fooking backstage or monkerty tunkerty in that Hennessey off a mark of 154 or whatever he ran off and they would still be running

sheesh try to have some kind of realistic measure of performance

Backstage spent most of his life racing off marks in the 130s and the highest mark he won off was 137 - put fecking Barber Shop in handicaps off 137 and see what happens - he would gag up

get some perspective ffs

Please do not swear judorick.

All I have done is to state my views on Barbers Shop, and have not commented whatsoever on his potential rivals.
By:

When: 10 Feb 12 00:26
but it is all relative - we are discussing the foxhunters

saying negative things about his runs in the KING GEORGE and GOLD CUP when we are discussing a hunter chase and some of his rivals, who are much shorter in the betting, have spent their lives Point-to-pointing and in class 3 handicaps needs to be put in context

someone said he "didn't stay" in the Hennessey - sheesh he finished 4th off 154 and ran behind one of the best horses ever to run in the race and they want to use that as evidence he won't stay at the Festival

makes no sense - yes you might have formed an opinion when he was running in the very best races but do you think those same opinions will be relevant against these handicappers and hunters?

if you really do then fair enough, but mark my words if he runs he will be bang there

Unless I'm missing something it's more than likely he will be in Berkshire since there are only 4 weeks to qualify and I cant see any sign of a single qualifying race.  I am getting very worried about my ante post bet on Chapoturgeon and he is already half way there

Calm down lad, & take a a good look at yourself.
You (judorick) started this good thread, to generate discussion.  That however is no excuse for you to fly off the handle in a most undignifying way to anyone who differs to your angle.

FWIW I reckon The Foxhunter will be a most intriguing renewal this year, and may yet back Barbers Shop.

Barbers Shop should get one under his belt at Kelso on Wednesday. Weather seems OK in Scotland.

I have to broadly agree with Judo here - Barbers Shop has shown high quality form in some very good races. If he retains most of that ability he has to be intereseting for the Foxhunters. And hound or not, the horse has won 6 times under rules.

All of the talk about previous ratings is nonsense really....the evidence of this race shows that you can win this race off marks in the 120s.....Kingscliff was rated far superior to all others when he went back there 3/4 years ago and could not do better than 10th....this has been the same story for lots of previously high rated rules horses.  This race much depends on the jockey being able to navigate a good race around the course (obvioulsy the horse needs some level of ability and fitness....but its not essential to be highly rated)
By:

When: 10 Feb 12 10:51
I think the race is changing though. It's traditionally been won by point-to-point and/or hunter chase horses but in recent years several winners have come from the "normal" chasing ranks. You make a very good point about jockey though Shakey and it's also a race where some luck in running is required as it can be a hazardous passage.

Sunday 4.20 at Leopardstown looks a good Hunter Chase, with some old favourites.

thanks Stront but looking at the last 6 years results, the horses that have won have ran in more points for most of their careers than rules races (Amicelli, Cappa Blue, Whyso Mayo, Drombeag, Zemsky) But I agree the quality of the race has improved due to rules trainers using it as an extra option other than a handicap race for horses at their twilight of their racing careers.  This is the arguement for a decent vets race at the festival.....the only thing missing from it for me.

plenty of pointing horses still winning stront to be fair.   and there are plenty of good quality horses pointing.
every point meeting you go to, you will see old horses from N.H  running in their later years

regarding barbers shop, i've never been his biggest fan. for me he always tries so hard not to win. so i would never back him regardless of the class of race he was running in.

he may well outclass them all, but you are hoping he retains his ability from a few seasons back. and like thedemps says, he still needs to qualify.   he is entered at kelso but he will bump into CLOUDY LANE there.  a horse who i would part a couple of shillings on for cheltenham

These top class perfrormances that Barbers Shop was putting up were back in 2009 and the last twice we have seen him he has been a shadow of his former self.A lot can happern in nearly three years,Horse's progress and others regress that's all part of the game.Does he retain enough ability and enthusiasm to be competitive once again at a level that would see him win a race at the Festival?only time will tell...One thing i do know is that we've all got our own views and this is an open forum, shame some don't share this approach

For those interested in Chapoturgeon,

CHAPOTURGEN can achieve the win required for Cheltenham Christie’s Foxhunter qualification by taking the South Dorset Men’s Open at Milborne St Andrew on Sunday.

The grey, winner of the Jewson Chase at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival, put up a superb performance to land the season’s opening Hunter Chase at Newbury and should have little trouble following up here.

Opposition includes last year’s winner Vintage Class and 2010 Coronation Cup victor Coombe Hill, who returned to his best at Larkhill in January.

Also among the contenders are Newton Abbot Hunter Chase winner Louis Pasteur, Chipley Park runner-up Ned The Post, and Foynes Island, last seen when landing an Exeter Handicap Chase for the Philip Hobbs stable in April.

Mahonia, a dual 2008 winner under Rules for Paul Nicholls, is an interesting entry, but Chapoturgeon is a confident selection.

Foynes Island and Mahonia are among the 20 top-class entries for the AGA Ladies’ contest.
