On target for the Denman Chase, I think. Good run there should see him line-up, yes?

It's a little hard to see him making the first 3, but if you're talking first 4/5, or without the big two, then he must have a chance. He runs Cheltenham well, seems in good form and has come 4th in a tough Gold Cup before (staying on through beaten horses). I don't know if I'd read much into another Newbury run as he runs that track so well.

Stront, he didn't run through beaten horses, he was nabbed on the line for 3rd by Mon Mome and it cost me and still hurts. Anyway I don't think he's as good now and it was quite soft that year also. But in 4 festivals he hasn't got within 30L of the winner. Well done for winning the Hennessy, but don't anybody be fooled as was probably worst renewal EVER. Save your money.

Sorry Shock! Remind me - was he in that breakaway group with Imperial, Denman, Cooldine, Kauto and one or two more then? Of course he probably did benefit from kauto Star's fall that day.

Yes he took the field along and was just starting to fade when Kauto fell. Wouldn't have had to endure that finish if Kauto had stood up.

Does anyone else think that Carruthers is like a poor man's Midnight Chase?
Both have a knack for negotiating the fences though neither are particularly fluent, but they have got big engines and loads of heart. A pair of admirable chasers, though for me, a bit below what's required to shake up the top rank ones, even with a smooth round of jumping. I think if either are to make the frame, they'll be way off the winner, like Mon Mome a few years ago. |

The Gold Cup of 2 years ago was absolutely brutal, some decent horses have taken a long time to recover their form after it. for me, Denman wasn't the same horse after, Carruthers and Calgary Bay needed a year to fully recover, it could be argued that Kauto Star did too. Cooldine still hasn't recovered! Though I have a feeling that he may suddenly refind his form after the National weights are published...
So back to Carruthers, can see him finishing closer to the present bunch than 2 years ago but I agree he seems best on flat tracks. Certainly don't see him as a poor man's Midnight Chase, the clock say she is a bit better than that. One concern would be how hard a race the Hennessy was this season, the time was very fast and it might have taken a lot out of the horses, hence the number of poor runs since by those that competed that day. |

cheers lads to be honest he will probably carry 5/10 ew as im a big fan of him and mattie bacholer has been a lucky jock for me,lol,yep as i have got him on big prices for small money.....

Hugh - Harsh to say midnight isn't fluent over his fences - for me, he jumped brilliantly on Saturday. (Agree though he's some way off the top bunch - I don't see why he'd be much closer to the principals than last year)

Strontium - I think he's a very clever jumper, as he seems to hit many of his fences without losing too much ground.
I've noticed this trait on many occasions, and he often lands awkwardly, though strangely, without losing too much momentum. Carruthers as well as Long Run, on the other hand, both seem to be unable to 'brush' through the obstacles as effectively as Midnight Chase, though Denman also seemed to be able to get away with this habit as well. I don't believe some of these animals are as dumb as many other seem to think. Without seeming to be patronising (as I know you're an aficionado) 'economic' negotiation of the obstacles is crucial to impetus, and it's very rare to see jumpers as efficient as Wayward Lad or Best Mate. If memory serves, Remittance Man was another one of those clever chasers. |

TLU - that is an excellent point about the Gold Cup of two years ago...it may be way off the mark but I like the 'evidence' you've stated...it's hard to dispute, and proffers a case for that over-rated hound Cooldine for The National, that many on here still remain very keen on.

Regarding Midnight Chase and Carruthers, 2 horses I like very much. I would have to say that I could only ever see Carruthers beating Midnight Chase if the ground was very soft. On good going IMO MC would beat him every time. Can't imagine Cheltenham being soft enough. 2 years ago it rained very heavy on the Friday which helped Carruthers.

That's true Shockster, it lumped down and got very soft during the afternoon. Thankfully, as that probably saved Kauto Star when he took that horrific fall.
