The "best champion hurdle of all time" surely had Night Nurse, Sea Pigeon and Birds Nest in it?

I assume you are talking about the Hardy Eustace / Harchibald race with Macs Joy, Inca, Accordion Etoile, Back In Front and Al Eile.

Quite how you would conclude it was the best champion is a different matter. Very exciting race but not one of those would trouble the current champion or Istabraq (in my opinion of course).

Harchibald, Hardy Eustace, Macs Joy, Essex? Back in Front? Hmmm, pass!

It would certainly rank ahead of the 05 version thieves.

Hardy Eustace and Brave Inca were very good horses but I would not put either anywhere near the top of the tree among winners.

Essex and Accordion Etoile were pretty high class but certainly not the very top class.

Loads of supreme winners have contested subsequent champions with many disappointing.

Inca had not won a race all year at that stage and was only a supreme winner at the time.

Royal Gait beat 3 other champion hurdlers when he won the race and some other very high class horses such as Fidway and Oh So Risky. It depends what slant you take on it. Granville Again beat 2 previous and a subsequent winner when he won his renewal. How many were in their prime is different.

The 05 renewal had no star but I guess it had depth at a certain level. No way would I rank it as the best there was however, or anything close to it.
