Festival Pub Guide

Yeah - not just in Cheltenham but anywhere within commuting distance.

I'm in Stow-On-The-Wold this year. Any info on pubs, curry houses and restaurants gatefully received.

Yeah I stay in Stow, about 20 mins or so into town.
I go to the Royal Oak preview evening in Prestbury, it'll be a sell out so no chance of you getting tickets but it's a great night.
Couple of pubs in Winchcombe that are usually decent on the Mon night, or the Rising Sun pub/hotel up Cleeve Hill.

O'neils is normally good Joist, can get very very busy though.

good call decalec...could not believe how a pub had gone so bad . wetherspoons without big windows last time . horrible .

best 3 bars in cheltenham are:

copa , taylors and oneils, all within few minutes walk

denman: you've named 2 of the worst pubs in the town!

taylors is good but it gets MOBBED so i'd give that a miss. if you want a good beer in the town centre then i'd head to the bayshill. copa and o'neils are souless dives imo.

This is the first time I've stayed more than the day in Cheltenham- is anywhere likely to have live music? Would be baffled if not. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

O'Neils ( Irish pub in Montpellier ) will have music as will the Queens hotel.

If you are staying in Cheltenham but not going to the course on a particular day, then all of the racing will be shown on a big screen in the St Stephens Sports & Social Club in Tivoli - literally 50 yards from the Tivoli pub.

This is a members Club but does welcome visitors who can behave themselves! Couple of real ale and usual keg options. Very low prices. Old fashioned, a bit drab and goes very quiet in the evenings but good craic during the day when the racing is on.

The Royal Well Tavern is a nice boozer that does decent food.

Used to be the Stab Inn, now a fancy wine bar. Not eaten there but heard the food is good too.

the queens is the biggest kip i was ever in and i was in a few.over priced slop and a pretentous air about the place..

O'Neill's is a hole and will be packed to the point where you can't breath. Taylor's is pretty decent and like someone said, has the best looking barmaids you will see anywhere. Neither are what you'd describe as a traditional pub to really get a nice Cheltenham experience though.   

For a place with a bit more about it (and live music), head to The Cotswold. That's where I'll be this weekend and all festival week.

Whats the name of the pub that you walk down the far side of the course for a couple of hundred yards then cross a small patch of land??

It might have been, twas about 6 years ago i went there after the Open Meeting.

Smallish bar as well and narrow corridors

the plough is close to the royal oak could be either.

RETREAT IS A GOOD PUB AND THE TIVOLI.
