SPIRIT SON pleased me in a good, stiff piece of work that will have bought him on a lot because he did need it. He’s coming to hand very nicely. If he's out of the CH I would be pretty pissed off after that being put out tonight. Wouldn't say Barry is like that. |

Most likely explanation is something coming to light at evening stables after Bazza had left. Hoping it's just a minor problem as there's still a good while to go to the race. If it's "just" a one week hold up then that should be surmountable even though not ideal.

MM there is no way BJG would make a statement like that if there was a problem. If tehere is a problem, it has almost certainly come to light thereafter. He started drifting at about 8ish or later.

I've heard it's cos he's been working poorly they r unsure at this rate if cheltenham is gonna come too soon.

You never know Wakey, although Barry's blog was apparently quite favourable in that respect and the drift is quite sudden this evening.

I think the most likely situation is that somethings come up a couple of days after his work. I def find Barry one of the most helpful jockeys with his blog & interviews.

barry did say he did need this workout. he obviously did not work the house down and maybe some who watched or heard about the gallop were not impressed and are laying him here. id take that, just hope its nothing serious after he came back from his work

apparently there is a report that SS was easily passed on his recent gallop..by Riverside Theatre.!
Obviously we dont know how hard NH was actually working SS but drift may be a reaction to this report |

Yeh Binny that's exactly what I've heard I don't think it is anything like a problem, I just think they are from happy with how SS is going riverside went past him very easily and SS obviously really needed the work and has a long way to go the thought is Cheltenham may be too soon as they won't want him going there with no run, with a horse of his in experience.

Re BJG's blog - my recollection is that last season, I heard NJH say that Binocular was in great shape, had a good chance and he was really looking forward to his run - this was at the Sandown preview evening on the Saturday before the Festival. On the Sunday morning Bino was withdrawn. Let's say things happen fast in this sport, even in that yard.

embarrasing for him if he was kept out of the loop while paying the bills and all while many people made money laying his horse. i would not be happy if i owned him while everyone from last night on seemed to know there was something up with the horse. surley the owner is the 1st man told?

I would say they are, but dare i say it, its all about money isnt it, laying the horse with inside knowledge so as to regain losses from fees for entering him in certain races and to get extras too?

Tbf Rod, i don't care, it is seriously obvious that it happens, course it happens, how simple is it? And who would know what happens behind closed doors! There is ways and means behind everything and i am still waiting after almost 2 years for someone to convince me JP did not have it right off with Binocular at all odds up to 999/1 in 2010!!!

Betfair need to try and introduce some kind of rule on AP betting whereby all bets are void within 24 hours of an injury being known. Hopefully this will stop people making money on the back of an injured horse.

Makes no difference. I just think you should scrap any bets matched from when the horse was found to be injured & when a statement has been made publicly. After it's all out in the open people can take a chance knowing he is likely to not run in the race. The way it is now is very unfair on people who want to make an honest bet on the horse when there is some scrote from Hendo's yard pressing the lay button because he knows the horse can't walk. It's not right the way it is.

Leaves a bad taste in the mouth but primarily because i think this horse was the only one capable of giving the fly a race should both have turned up fit and well,will leave a few "what ifs" should he come back after march and prove to be as good as some of us think.

fair enough MM, I take your point and it's a serious issue.
But it might be difficult to define in betting rules. there's also all sorts of uncertainty - the horse recovers (or appears to) then deteriorates again; connections decide to risk it, etc. When do you suspend the market on that horse. When do you reopen it? How many times? There are too many potential lines to draw/cross and lots of potential for manipulation. I fully understand the current system serious favours those with inside info, and that's unfair. it arguably ought to be against the rules of racing to lay a horse where one has inside knowledge. At least at the monent everything is relatively quick, then it's out in the open. Incidentally, I thought Henderson's comments on the role of exchanges in all of this on C4 today were naive and disgraceful. |

Sorry Barnsey - misread your question. Basically he said he was very upset about the whole Spirit Son business and how exchanges force connections hand to act quickly when there may or may not be a problem. However, I'd say it was a lot stronger than that and he seemed genuinely upset. I'd imagine it will be reported in the RP tomorrow. I've deleted it from Sky Plus now so I can't type up a transcript. Maybe there was more on the horse racing forum this pm?

Ironic he would blame exchanges when it is people connected with his yard clearly taking advantage of the situation. Maybe he should get his own house in order before he starts publicly moaning.
