Oddly, it's "St Patrick's Thursday" - on the 15th.

I think it's actually World Hurdle day - could be wrong because this has all the resonance of the second Kajagoogoo album with yours truly but to answer your question.

It was when Cheltenham went to 4 days and the quality was spread thinner. The dyed-in-the-wool Festval regulars - for once deciding not to be milked for suckers - decided Thursday was the 'weakest' day and decided they wouldn't go.

The course marketing cr3tins then decided on two things: tacitly admit Thursday wasn't much and offer a reduced price Thursday and Friday package.

Second, in a staggeringly visionary and blue-sky marketing exercise, they decided to make Thursday a Ladies Day, because no other course had ever done that before. They wrote some gash copy about it 'honouring the achievements of Ladies in NH racing' ('cos Jenny Pitman and Venetia Williams were forever whingeing about their achievements not being recognised), introduced a 'best dressed Lady' competition (because that's all female racegoers are really into isn't it, dressing up and looking pretty) and, um, that's about it.

Because of course actually believing in your core product - the racing and the emotional rollercoaster it can engender and the notion that we're all a bunch of overgrown schoolkids on the wag from 'real life' for a few days and loving every minute of our wonderful, crazy, life-enhancing world - is a bit too much to get across to 've kidz' ('n sh1t), isn't it?

Thursday was "Ladies Day" last year iirc, but Mr Eboue is right, that honour goes to Wednesday this year.

Tuesday is "Champions Day"
Thursday "St Patrick's Thursday" (has anyone told him?)
Friday is "Cheltenham Gold Cup Day" (at least they've got that right)
