Oliver Sherwood has made a bright start to the new season and by mid-November had registered ten winners which included promising performances from some of his less experienced inmates.
Perhaps the most exciting member of his team is the five-year-old Global Power, one of his novice hurdle discoveries of last season when he was unfortunate not to have won more than twice - one bumper one hurdle - and progressed through to a mark of 130. His improvement has continued this season and he has a big target ahead of him at Haydock on November 19. He has another improving hurdler in Kasbadali while the bumper winner Buxom is one of several interesting horses in that category on his Upper Lambourn team, the pick of which he discusses here. CIRCUS OF DREAMS 8 b g Kayf Tara - Foehn Gale. Better chaser than hurdler and won third race over fences from 15 starts when winning final start of last season beating sole opponent easily in three mile handicap at Ffos Las off 113. Went to 116 and well beaten next run in May and now 114. Has won off 117 and ran well to be third in charity flat race at Cheltenham March 13. "I was delighted with the spin that he had in the charity race at Cheltenham on November 13 which shows he's in good form. He would have run earlier but had an abscess underneath his jaw. The family are a bit kinky but this one is the classiest of them and wants decent ground. Normally jumps well and in good order." ARKOSE 7 b g Luso - Endless Patience. Not easy to win with, third once and second three starts in novice chases from two and a half to three and a quarter miles May to August. First run off 112 and off 117 latest start in extended three mile handicap at Carlisle October 20 when pulling up. Now 114. "A year ago I couldn't get him over a fence let alone finishing a chase but put up some ok performances spring/summer. I don't know what went wrong at Carlisle last time but my gut feeling is that it was just a bit too competitive. I think three miles is better and he will have blinkers sooner rather than later but wants good ground." BEN CEE PEE M 6 ch g Beneficial - Supreme Magical Both wins in 12 hurdle starts have come in handicaps over two and a half miles off 97 and 104 on good ground in April. Fair effort on penultimate start at Ffos Las October 9 when five lengths third of 15 to Sentimentaljourney. Stayed on 107 when well beaten seventh of 14 to Well Hello There in two and a half mile handicap at Carlisle 11 days later. Stays on same mark. "I probably ran him too quickly after Ffos Las when he disappointed last time. Also I have no doubt that he'll be better with blinkers back on. Good ground is quite important but I can't wait to get him over fences but he's still competitive off this mark over hurdles and I want to try three miles then chasing. Handle good to soft." BUXOM 4 b f Milan - Bermuda Bay. Won sole start in 14 furlong seven-runner bumper at Fontwell October 19 beating Ginger Fizz four lengths. "I own her in partnership with David Redvers so she is for sale. Tough, not the biggest but has come on a lot for her win and my aim is to get her qualified for the DBS Mares bumper at Sandown in March." CAMDEN 5 b g Old Vic Electric View. Won second of seven hurdle starts on final outing of last season when beating Rossmore Lad 12 lengths in eight-runner three mile novice at Fontwell off 125. Went to 130 and pulled up on reappearance in three mile handicap won by The Knoxs at Exeter November 9. "Very tough so I was extremely disappointed at Exeter last time but after scoping him we found he was dislodging his soft palate so he's had that cauterised. I was going over fences with him but he'll have another spin over hurdles then it will be fences over two and a half moving up to three." DRUM VALLEY 3 b g Beat Hollow - Euippe. Unraced. "Well bred and should have no trouble winning a juvenile bumper and after that we'll decide whether to stay in them or go over hurdles." DUNE SHINE 6 b g Karinga Bay - Caipirinha. One from nine over hurdles - won 19 furlong handicap at Fontwell in January off 105. Off 112 latest start when 17 lengths ninth of 23 to Decoy in 21 furlong handicap at Cheltenham November 11. "Capable of winning but will be better over fences and soft ground is important so it was on the quicker side for him at Cheltenham last time - but for that he might have been placed. I'm going to give him one more try over three miles then switch to fences. Jumps well and I like him." FITYONEFIFTYONE 7 b g Oscar - Great Dante. Maiden hurdler and one from ten in chases, sole win coming in two mile event at Taunton in March beating Bay Central 23 lengths off 124. Stayed on that mark when beaten next two starts and off 123 when tailed off behind Anquetta in two mile listed handicap at Ascot October 29. Now 122. "I rate this horse so I was disappointed at Ascot last time - he'd had a wind op in the autumn - but he came back from Ascot with pulled muscles in his rear. For that reason he'll be off until around Christmas. He's better than last time and I think he'll be ok off his mark and I do think he's much better going left handed." FINANCIAL CLIMATE 4 b g Exit To Nowhere - Claudia's Pearl. Maiden pointer, won bumper debut when left in lead as leader veered off course close home and beat Miss Milborne length and a half in 19 furlong event at Fontwell November 4. "Despite being fortunate to win at Fontwell they were still well clear of the third. Ready for hurdles now and will be better still when he gets fences. On heavy ground we'll keep him to two miles but he'll get further on better ground. Works nicely and should win his two novices without too much trouble." FLORAFERN 6 b m Alflora - Mossy Fern. Second in all three bumper runs and travelling well when losing footing and falling two out on hurdle debut over two miles at Lingfield in race won by Heather Royal November 8. "She's probably going to be better going right-handed and wouldn't be the most natural jumper but gets over. Got a nasty knock at Lingfield but will be back in work soon and works well, tough and she'll win. Even though she'd be going the wrong way at Newbury I do like the thought of the mares final there for her later in the season. Possibly better on decent ground." FURROWS 6 b g Alflora - See More Furrows. Won two mile novice hurdle at Wincanton in January but better effort at Ludlow in March when four and a half lengths second of 15 to Arthur's Pass. Rated 120 and well beaten in two mile Aintree handicap hurdle in May won by Laterly. Now 117. "Had gone over when he ran at Aintree but this is a nice horse. Has a little problem a month ago but back in work now and will have another run over hurdles before he goes over fences which was always the plan this season. He might be a two mile horse and his mark is ok." GLOBAL POWER 5 b g Subtle Power - Bartelko. Improving novice hurdler despite winning only once last season and confirmed rating of 130 on reappearance in grade three handicap over two and a half miles at Chepstow October 22 when two and a half lengths second of 18 to Arthurian Legend. Now 135. "If there's some give in the ground then he'll go for the valuable fixed brush hurdle at Haydock on November 19. There's also a two and a half mile open handicap hurdle that I'll look at. He's got his own way of jumping but it doesn't stop him and I think he'll jump a fence better than a hurdle. He is definitely improving all the time and doesn't need much work and I think he'll stay three miles." GREENLAW 5 b g Helissio - Juris Prudence. Won bumper debut in emphatic style beating Brandon Thomas three and three quarter lengths at Huntingdon October 30. "Nice, wasn't right last season which might have been a blessing. Big and if he were to get beat it would have been Huntingdon because he wants a stiffer track but did it nicely. We're deliberating whether to give him one more bumper but my instinct is to go over hurdles now because he jumps for fun. I do think he'll want decent ground." JEANO DE TOULOUSE 4 b g Lavirco - Indeciable. Unraced. "Going to Towcester for a bumper on November 20 and does have ability. Nice horse that is for sale. Worth watching." KAITUNA 5 b m Flemensfirth - Southern Skies. Two from six in two and a half mile novice hurdles last season and ended with 125 rating. Well beaten off that mark and then 120 in two mile six and three mile handicap April and May. Starts this season on 115. "Had some joint problems that have been sorted out and in full work now. She's better than the last couple of runs and is getting ready for novice chasing. Jumps well and I think she'll win races over two and a half miles and will get three." KARACAS 5 ch m Karinga Bay - Suntas. Well behind sole appearance in five-runner Aintree bumper won by Itsalark in June. "She's ok and not a bumper horse so look out for her over hurdles but only when there's plenty of mud. Needs to relax and will get better with racing." KASBADALI 6 b g Kahyasi - Nikalie. Consistent two and a half mile novice handicap hurdler, won final start of last season off 110 beating Blue Monster 16 lengths in ten-runner Ludlow event. Went to 115 for reappearance and beat Whispering Jack three quarters of a length in two mile five handicap at Towcester November 3. Now 120. "It's important that he goes right-handed and best on decent ground and not testing. I was very impressed with his attitude last time so we'll have another try over hurdles before fences. I still think he can win off this mark and I'm very keen to up him to three miles." KNOCKALONGI 5 b g Fair Mix - Understudy. Won bumper in January and second both hurdle starts this season, latest when three lengths second of six to Mush Mir in two miles five novice at Southwell November 7. "Bought to be a three mile chaser and that's what he'll be. I thought we'd win at Southwell but it wasn't our track and I think good ground is important to him. He'll stay three miles over hurdles before he goes over fences." MAJORICA KING 5 b g Kahyasi - Majorica Queen. Smart without winning in three bumper runs - seven lengths second of 15 to Ericht at Huntingdon in January. Pleasing hurdle debut over two and a half at Carlisle October 20 when two lengths third of 12 to Sivola De Sivola. "Highly strung but tough and will stay well. He'd have been a bit closer last time but the saddle slipped and he couldn't be ridden out on the run-in. Loves jumping and will win a novice hurdle and will stay three miles." MILGEN BAY 5 br g Generous - Lemon's Mill. Bumper winner/ maiden hurdler that came good on second chase start beating The Laodicean 16 lengths in five-runner two mile maiden even at Towcester November 3 when rated 115. "Disappointed me a bit because I've always thought a bit of him. I gave him an easy race to win at Towcester which he did but I'm not certain about his trip but I think he'll get three even though he didn't get home over hurdles last season, possibly weak. Capable again in a novice handicap." MILLY MALONE 5 b m Milan - Sharp Single. Maiden bumper but has run better in two hurdle starts this season, latest when length and a quarter second of 11 to Young Mags in two mile novice at Towcester November 3. "I think her mark is very workable but must relax. Probably unlucky not to win last time - it would certainly have been interesting if we'd pinged the last. Jumps well and one to look out for over further in the mares final at Newbury in March." SILVER ACCORD 8 b/br g Accordion - Mazza. One from 11 in novice hurdles and started with 114. Progressed to 118 and off that mark latest start when well behind Enfant De Lune in two and a half mile handicap at Sandown November 5. Now back to 114. "Better than the last run and is going over fences and the handicap mark is now more realistic but he is in and out. Better on decent ground but I'm not sure he'll stay three miles." THE KNOWLEDGE BEN CEE PEE M: is one to look out for when blinkers are reapplied, possibly over fences. DRUM VALLEY: is showing enough to win a juvenile bumper. DUNE SHINE: could well make his mark in muddy three mile novice chases. GLOBAL POWER: is still on the upgrade and must be monitored this season. MAJORICA KING: was value for being closer last time as he saddle slipped. MILLY MALONE: is expected to exploit a workable debut mark over hurdles. JEANO DE TOULOSE: is working well enough to take any average bumper. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The first stable tour that Charlie Longsdon ever did was on this site some five years ago. At that time he hardly had 15 horses worth inclusion. How times have changed. From his first season with nine winners he has made steady progress which culminated in last season's personal best of 44. But already he looks certain to better that and set the bar even higher having reached 32 winners by the end of October. His yard at Over Norton, Oxfordshire, is full of horses with potential both in bumpers, over hurdles and in novice and handicap chases. Here the trainer takes us though his pick of the team that looks certain to propel him to new heights. ACCORDINTOLAWRENCE 5 b g Accordion - Giolladante. Won two from four in novice hurdles last season over two and two and a half miles. Rated 118 after beating Cottage Acre two and a quarter lengths at Fontwell in January. Beaten when falling in two mile five novice hurdle at Cheltenham in March. Was due to run but knocked himself but he'll be ready soon and he'll stay at two and a half but I'll look for a novice handicap chase. It's not a bad mark and there's one at Hereford on November 17 or Exeter on November 20. No ground preferences, athletic and a good jumper. I'd like to think there will be a fair bit of improvement over a fence." BASEBALL TED 9 b g Beneficial - Lishpower. In good form last season winning three times in two mile handicap chases and rose from 103 to career high 121 to start this season in October. Up to 125 latest after finishing half length second at Carlisle but ran moderately latest start in two mile handicap chase at Ascot October 29. Now 124. "I was hoping for soft ground at Ascot last time but it wasn't and they were always going a stride too quick. If it had been softer I'm sure he'd have been in the frame. There's a 0-125 at Exeter on November 20 and that looks right because I think his mark is still workable." BE MY LIGHT 5 b m Oscar - Simply Divine. Won two novice hurdles last season over two mile five, latest off 104 at Uttoxeter in April. Started this season off 111 and stays on that mark after finishing seven lengths third of 13 to Drumbaloo in two and a half mile handicap hurdle at Chepstow October 25. "Mare with a great attitude that still looks competitive off her mark. She hated Chepstow last time because of the undulations but still ran arguably her best race. Also, she would just have needed that run but is hard as nails. She might jump a fence later in the season but she'll stay hurdling while she can win." CASTLETOWN BRIDGE 4 ch g Bienamado - Midnight Orchid. Won bumper on debut under rules at Worcester early October and showed good attitude when beating Ifyouletmefinish a nose in two mile novice hurdle at Uttoxeter October 28. "Nice and probably should have won last time but there wasn't enough in the race to carry him through until the last furlong. Instead he pulled himself to the front three furlongs out. Schooled well, in good form and might have a bit of class. Ready towards the end of November and will start at two miles and can step up in trip later." CROSS OF HONOUR 4 ch g Publisher - Threecrossmammies. Point winner and six length winner of bumper debut at Carlisle early October. "He's entered for the bumper at the Cheltenham Paddy Power meeting. He's not flashy but does everything you want, not a speed machine and I don't know how good the Carlisle race was but he won with authority. He won't run anywhere with firm in the going description." GRANDADS HORSE 5 b/br g Bollin Eric - Solid Land. Improved through last season and had won all four starts this season, starting on April 28 over two miles five at Southwell and was off 122 when winning handicap hurdle debut at Stratford October 22 by seven lengths from Chain Of Command. Now 135. "Just keeps progressing and will do so again over fences next season. The trip and track didn't suit him at Stratford last time because he wants a galloping circuit over further. Likes decent ground and for that reason there is an option for him at the Paddy Power meeting, the intermediate handicap hurdle over two five. Only does what he has to and although 135 sounds high, it might not be." HAYJACK 6 b g Karinga Bay - Celtic Native. Won Hereford bumper in January and pleasing hurdle debut over two miles at Exeter on November 1 finishing four and a half lengths second to Jump City. "Nice run at Exeter but he does want a trip, although I might give him one more run over two before going further - there's another novice at Exeter on November 20. His jumping has kept on improving and there is another option at Wetherby on November 23." HAZY TOM 5 b g Heron Island - The Wounded Cook. Unbeaten in three starts 2011, two in bumpers and hurdle debut at Aintree October 22 when beating It's A Gimme a head. "He's another that wants further and I was pleased with him at Aintree because he still hadn't schooled outside at that stage. I'll give him one more over two before going two and a half. Bags of improvement in him and he could well turn out to be one of the nicest we've got." HIDDEN KEEL 6 gr g Kirkwall - Royal Keel. Won three novice chases last season, latest off 145 when beating Rougham 21 lengths at Exeter in April. Up to 149 reappearance over two and a half in Carlisle conditions chase October 30 and beaten 16 lengths into second by Mr Moonshine. "The problem I've got is trying to find a race. As well as a high rating I need to run him right-handed. He needs to stay at two and a half miles and I'll be looking at Kempton, Sandown and Ascot. He might have needed the race last time at Carlisle and he needs a couple more weeks of hard graft." HILDISVINI 5 b g Milan - Site Mistress. Bumper winner but looking smart over hurdles and two from two last season. Beat Kid Cassidy two and a half lengths at Sandown in February and then beat Cleaver half a length over two and a half at Lingfield in March. Debut mark of 135 doesn't leave much latitude. "His mark is all to do with beating Kid Cassidy and it won't be easy off 135. I'm going to run him in a Pertemps qualifier when he'll be ridden to get home. Although he will want that trip I'm not sure if he'll quite get it at the moment. He wants soft ground." KINGARRICK 3 ch g Selkirk - Rosacara. Middle distance handicapper for Even Johnson Houghton, one win at two, rated 80 and had dropped to 70. "Looks tough and will need some hard graft, bit of playboy at the moment. Doing plenty of schooling and looks ok. LADY KARINGA 6 ch m Karinga Bay - Tachometer. One from five in novice hurdle, progressing in trip to winning over 22 furlongs at Newton Abbot in September beating Run Along Boy 13 lengths. Debut mark of 107 when 15 lengths sixth of 14 to Gormastown Cuckoo over extended three miles at Aintree October 22. Stays on that mark. "I think she's fairly handicapped off 107. She was too keen last time and made ground too quickly then got tired at the last when she still might have been third if she'd jumped it ok. There's a handicap hurdle for her at Ascot on November 19, 0-125. Ground can be good or on the easier side." LOOSE CHIPS 5 b g Sir Harry Lewis - Worlaby Rose. Second in Irish point and some ability sole bumper start when fifth of 14 to Greenlaw at Huntingdon October 30. "I think he'll win a bumper and he would have been closer at Huntingdon but for getting into a bumping match on the inside. He's not big so I thought it was a good run because he is one of the greener ones that I would expect to improve a lot." MAGNIFIQUE ETOILE 4 b g Kayf Tara - Star Riva. Placed in three bumpers last season and won first start in same category at Market Rasen in September beating Woodacre 22 lengths. Easy winner of hurdle debut at Stratford October 22 over two miles beating Dark Shadow 13 lengths. "Hadn't done any schooling outside when he won at Stratford but he is a very good jumper. He's a bit like Hazy Tom. I want to go quietly with him before stepping up in class and I wouldn't want the ground too soft." NO NO CHARLIE 4 b g Croco Rouge - Dianeme. Encouraging bumper debut at Worcester October 11 finishing 11 lengths second to Asker. "Lovely horse that did nothing wrong at Worcester and you won't see his best until he jumps a fence. One more bumper then hurdles." PAINTBALL 4 b g Le Vie Dei Colori. Useful juvenile hurdler last season, winning twice and finishing 15 lengths ninth of 23 in red Winter Handicap at Cheltenham in March rated 123. Won off that mark same course and distance following month. Highly encouraging reappearance off 130 at Sandown November 5 when ten lengths third of 12 to Pateese. "I was pleased with him at Sandown but I should be running him in a better race with less weight. Just struggling a bit because he's lost the age allowance and although he's running to 130 I think he'll improve as the season goes on. The main thing is that he's settling early which means you can ride a race on him and now be handy. He handled the softer ground at Sandown well." QHILIMAR 7 b g Ragmar - Fhilida. Useful staying chaser, won fifth of 21 starts over fences on penultimate outing over 27 furlongs at Newton Abbot in September beating Earth Planet four and a half lengths off 127. Up to career-high 135 latest start and even better effort when two and a half lengths second to Power Pack Jack over three miles at Carlisle on October 30. "Unlikely to get into the Hennessy but he's going to be alright in staying chases. He hated the tacky ground at Carlisle last time but still ran his race. I won't go any further than three and a half because he didn't get home in the Midlands National." RESTEZEN D'ARMOR 6 b g Grand Tresor - Lafrizen - D'Armor. Much better hurdler than chaser and had won two of three wins in that category last two starts. Beat Saddler's Deal four and a half lengths over in two and a quarter mile handicap at Bangor September 29 off 115. Beat Quel Bruere 15 lengths latest run over two miles five at Worcester October 19 rated 122 and now formidable 134. "I don't honestly know why he's improved so much this season but we did change the tactics from coming very late because we did think he wasn't genuine. The other thing is that Andrew Tinkler gets a very good tune out of him where others can't. I'd rather him carry more weight in lesser races. There's a race at Ascot on November 18, a handicap chase, two miles three 0-135. The only thing is that all his wins have been left handed and I don't know if that's a factor. The big thing is that he needs a galloping track." REY NACARADO 6 b g Posidonas - Ice Pearl. Two from five over fences, latest win came off 111 over 27 furlong handicap at Newbury in March. Off 113 latest run when eight lengths third of ten to Snake Charmer over same trip at Fontwell September 30. Upped to 120. "Got into a fight a long way from home last time and got tired. There's no doubt that the race he won at Newbury at the end of last season really woke him up. He'll go for the Fontwell National on November 13 and he will definitely be held up." ROSSMORE LAD 6 b/br g Beneficial - Celestial Rose. Won handicap hurdle debut over three miles at Chepstow October 25 beating Monsieur Cadou two and a half lengths off 113. Now 120. "Improving but I'm not sure where he'll go but I don't think 120 is impossible but he does need to grow up. Will improve again next time and will be going chasing soon and I was pleased he went through the softer ground last time which opens up my options." TIME FOR SPRING 7 b g Snurge - Burksie. Finished last season in good form winning 22 furlong handicap hurdle at Sandown by a length from Havingotascoobydo off 120. Won novice chase debut over two and a half at Carlisle on October 7 beating Ballycolin a length and three quarters. Now 125. "Gorgeous horse. Needed further than two and a half last time and I don't think his mark is impossible and I've put him in an amateur riders handicap chase at Cheltenham's Paddy Power meeting. Still green but I like his attitude but wouldn't want the ground too soft." TRAFALGAR ROAD 7 b g Bob's Return - Call Catherine. Useful handicap hurdler, off since December 2009 when rated 127 but pleasing reappearance at Sandown November 5. Dropped to 120 and upped to two and a half miles when staying on nicely to finish six lengths eighth of 18 to Enfant De Lune. "I was delighted he got into the race so easily on his comeback at Sandown which shows the ability is still there. It was understandable that he got tired from two out. He should stay on this mark which looks exploitable and he's going over fences next. Jumps well and I'll be looking for a novice handicap. There's a two and a half mile novice handicap, 0-125, at Sandown on December 2. I don't to rush him." VINCITOIRE 5 b g Starborough - Viva Vodka. Useful hurdler rated 120 and won off that mark in three mile novice chase at Worcester in September. Up to 130 and beat Aldertune two lengths same course and distance October 19. Stays on same mark. "I do think his mark is tough although I can understand why he's got it. Good attitude because if he gets into a duel he wants to win, hard as nails. Probably doesn't want it worse than good to soft. There's a 0-135 handicap chase at the next Ascot meeting which might be ok." WEST BRIT 3 b g High Chaparral - Aldburgh. Useful ten furlong handicapper on the flat for Ed Dunlop, rated 82. Yet to race for present yard. "Really like what he's done since he came, loves his jumping." WIDE RECIEVER 8 b g Taipan - The Plud. Handicap chaser that has come good latterly winning two most recent starts at Wetherby in October off 75 and 95 around three miles. Now career high 109 after latest win when beating Ngong Hills four lengths. "Only improved and can still win off 109. He wants a galloping, right-handed three miles even though he's won the other way and there is a race at Lingfield on November 22, a handicap chase 0-115. Doesn't want it too soft." WILLOW'S SAVIOUR 4 ch g Septieme Ciel - Willow Gale. Ability in three bumpers, latest on reappearance October 11 when fourth, beaten six and a half lengths by Crowning Jewel. "Thought he's won at Carlisle but wasn't quite quick enough. He'll be fine in two and a half mile hurdles. Jumps for fun and actually led older horses the first time we were on grass at the beginning of November." THE KNOWLEDGE ACCORDINTOLAWRENCE: is one to watch when he goes over fences. BE MY LIGHT: will be much better when she gets a flatter track. HAYJACK: is still very much on the up and can be followed. HAZY TOM: could be above average and must be carefully monitored. TRAFALGAR ROAD: came back well from a long lay-off and is ready to go chasing. WIDE RECIEVER: is still on a winnable mark and will improve again when right-handed. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Although the jump season proper has only just begun in earnest there had already been a significant shift in the fortunes of Jamie Snowden. Very much the "go to" rider in his amateur days when it came to military races in particular, he operated as Nicky Henderson's assistant before branching out on his own in 2008-09. It was not an overnight success and his best totals had been six in the last two campaigns. However, a move to Lambourn in the middle of this year has changed things around and his total by the end of October had grown to ten with the prospect of more to come. This is a stable that looks certain to grow and while there might be a lack of volume there is some sensible planning going on which the trainer explains here along with his opinion of the team he handles. AMERICAN LADIE 5 b m Monashee Mountain - Dounine. Useful and once rated 120 when trained by Alan King winning once in 13 starts. Started for current yard off 113 and finished four lengths second of 14 to Dream Function in 19 furlong novice hurdle at Newton Abbot in September. Upped to 115 and readily won five-runner novice over 21 furlongs at Ludlow early October. Stays on that mark. "The plan is Wincanton on November 5 for a valuable mares handicap hurdle over two miles six and if it stayed dry then some of the bigger guns wouldn't be out and we'd creep in at the foot of the weights. Then at Ascot two weeks later there's another mares handicap. She's decent and any more up in trip will help her and I can see her getting three miles. She works brilliantly at home but regarding ground I think she is versatile because one of her best bits of form when Alan King had her was second to Sparky May at Lingfield on bottomless ground. I was once concerned about running her on faster." BALLYBROKER BOY 7 b g Snurge - Ballybroker Lady. Won both points in Ireland May and June. Yet to race for present yard. "Got a rating of 89 then 98 in the Irish point to point ratings and Denman got 90 on his win. Schooled over hurdles and has done two good bits of work and I plan to run him towards the end of November in a two and a half mile novice hurdle. Some cut is ideal and he's got an engine." EL DIEGO 7 b g Saddler's Wells - Goncharova. Modest middle distance flat winner and without a win in six hurdle attempts but had dropped from 105 to 93 latest start when beaten a neck by Mr Demister in three and a quarter mile handicap chase at Wincanton October 13. Now 97. "He goes to Warwick on November 2 for a conditional race over three miles two. He's got the ability and it's a case of conning him into doing it. When push comes to shove he probably doesn't battle but he's got the ability. I would think three mile two handicap chases through the winter will be made for him. Goes on any ground and jumps well." GRADUATION NIGHT 5 br g Kayf Tara - Jadidh. Late-maturing novice, had dropped from 107 to 100 when making chase debut in novice handicap at Wincanton over three and a quarter miles October 23. Won four-runners race by 44 lengths and faces hefty rise but improving. "The handicapper's had a say about last time and put him up 15lb which is a bit dramatic considering it was a bad race. It was a big improvement and he is only five and he is Sergeant Cecil's half brother and he didn't really start to improve until he was six. Three mile-plus chases are made for him. There are still options for him off 107 with a penalty before he's off his new mark and he's in at Chepstow on November 2 for a novice handicap 0-110. There is then a race at Ascot which Knighton Combe won a couple of years ago, 0-120." HORSESHOE REEF 8 b g Encosta De Lago - Christies Beach. Without a win in seven hurdle attempts but looks better over fences and two from 13, latest off 110 in 20 furlong handicap at Uttoxeter in September beating Marc Aurele ten lengths.. Off 119 next two starts and better effort when ten lengths second to Benbane Head same course 11 days later. Two lengths third of four latest outing in 20 furlong novice handicap at Stratford October 22 and now 118. "I am giving him a break and I'd like to think he should have won last time out and for whatever reason Sam Twiston-Davies is key to this horse. Doesn't seem to run for anyone else. Moody but a combination of Sam and visors have transformed him. Needs fast ground and will go hunting." IXORA 5 gr m Milan - Tucacus. Useful mare, still improving and won fourth of 11 starts latest outing when beating Cockney Trucker length and three quarters of 129 in 21 furlong handicap hurdle at Cheltenham October 15. Now off career-high 133. "The plan with her is the Coral Cup. Won nicely at Cheltenham last time having come from Ireland and the great thing about her is that she'd been winning for us over two miles before Cheltenham which was her ideal trip. I always thought she would improve for being upped and although I think she'll go on good to soft she won't handle heavy. She's been on the go since June so I've got to give her a break and look after her mark for the big one. If I run her again she'll either win and go up which would make the Coral Cup much harder or lose and go down which would mean she might not get in. She'll be, fit, fresh and ready." JAMESSON 6 b g Bishop Of Cashel - Native Belle. Placed in all three bumper starts in Ireland, latest September 24. Yet to race for present yard. "Not a speed machine, proper galloper and I'd like to run him in one soft ground bumper then go hurdling. He's schooling already and is a beautiful looking horse that I like to think could win a bumper. In his races so far he looks to travel well, then get outpaced about three form home then stays on." KNIGHTON COMBE 11 b g Midnight Legend - Cindercombe. Maiden hurdler that won fifth of 16 starts over fences when winning best prize of career in three and a half mile handicap chase at Uttoxeter in June beating Ballyvesey eight lengths. Has gone to 132, career-high mark. "He's back in and will go for a three mile novice hurdle at Ffos Las at the end of November then it's straight to the Welsh National. If he ran well in that, which I'd like to think he would, then he'll go up a few pounds and we might then start thinking about the real thing at Aintree. MISS MILBOURNE 5 b m Tamure - Motown Melody Plenty of potential in three bumper runs last season when trained by Colin Tizzard, finishing second at Folkestone and Huntingdon, beaten two lengths by progressive Baby Shine on the latter in February. Yet to race for present yard. "A proper soft ground galloper and although I've got her entered up I am looking for a bit more rain. Her Huntingdon second has worked out really well with the second finishing second in mares bumper at Aintree in April. She'll go in one more bumper then go over hurdles - she's schooled fine." MOUNTAIN RETREAT 4 b g Saddler's Wells - Fig Tree Drive. Maiden bumper hurdler in Ireland with patches of form but well beaten last two starts, latest in 21 furlong Tramore handicap in August off 90. Yet to race for present yard. "Sublimity's half-brother and his bumper form was alright and after his last run he's now dropped to 85. I'd like to think he can exploit that because he looked poor when he turned up but looks great now. He's about to start cantering and will be ready around Christmas." SANDY'S DOUBLE 5 ch g Double Trigger - Skipcarl. Well beaten in three novice hurdle starts from two and a half to three miles but flashes of ability. Debut rating of 100 is taking no chances. "Nice, big, backward horse and there was no point running him in bumpers because he wants to go three mile chasing. He was a bit keen last season and wasn't 100 per cent on his run back at Fontwell. Although I was hoping for less I think he can be competitive in handicaps off 100. I'll look at a two and a half mile handicap 0-100 where he carries top weight. Although chasing is his game there are definitely races to be won over hurdles first." SHINKO MOON 4 b g Shinko Forest - Silver Moon. Won two mile bumper at Wincanton in March but well beaten in Market Rasen bumper and hurdle debut over two miles at Plumpton October 31 when distant sixth of seven to Judiciary, faded after leading. "Needs a flat out gallop and didn't get it at Market Rasen and I was nonplussed by his run at Plumpton because he works well. It may be that he needs more experience and you might see the best of him in handicap hurdles." THE KNOWLEDGE AMERICAN LADIE: has some interesting options in mares handicap hurdles.
