I'm off to Haydock tomorrow and shall be backing Diamond Harry, but if Kauto Star wins, i'll not be bothered in the slightest about losing money

id love to be going mate,we've been lucky to have such a superstar over the last few years,lets hope the old boy has one more big one in him

Always been more of a Denman fan than Kauto, but you can't NOT love Kauto Star

I'll be there too. Just hope the old boy comes home safe, anything after that is a bonus. Have backed TFR but there will be only one horse I'm shouting for if he's in with a chance coming down the home straight

Back from my favourite day at the races EVER. Awesome performance.

Don't get me wrong that could be his last great run, but to be there to witness it was what this sport is all about to me. Don't mind admitting being close to tears all the way down the Haydock straight. Don't mind admitting calling for his retirement previously - I was wrong.

That Clive Smith is a lucky so and so.

Just got back, never known an atmosphere like it at any races ever.

There was a real buzz about the place from the minute Kauto entered the parade ring, people climbing up trees to get a photo.

After he'd won there was a massive stampede to try and get back to the winners enclosure.  Could hear everyone saying "I backed Long Run" or "I had Diamond Harry" - nodoby had backed Kauto and nobody cared!!  Paul Nicholls having great banter with the crowd.

I'm not bothered that I didn't get a winner all day - I just don't care!!!

What a great post.  Great to here people still enjoy NH Racing over all for the love of the sport.

Jealous of you guys, wish I could have been there... Snuck out of work to watch it, and couldn't believe the number of fellas in laddies cheering him home at the same time as doing their b*ll*cks - great scenes!

yep....perhaps the only time you could have backed one of the other runners but find yourself cheering for kauto star.

What a fantastic race. Credit to Long Run for staying on so well considering he looked beat a mile out. Thats probably as well as I've ever seen Kauto jump, and thats saying something. Brilliant, brilliant performance. Shades of Dessie winning his last KG with the crowd.

I was there too - my bet was Weird Al - Long Run reverse exacta - cheered Kauto on from four out.

Think he was knackered over the last two but the purity of his competitive spirit is such that he produced a couple more leaps from another world. 

Holt was spot on - not only is the horse blessed with enormous ability but he's brave beyond belief - could n't believe how hard he tried in this year's Gold Cup even when beaten.

Can I add one thing, lads.

He may not be everyone's cup of tea, but fair play to Nicholls.

He had us crying in the aisles when Denman won that Hennessy a couple of years ago and he's done it again with Kauto.

He deserves some credit for keeping these two, as talented as they are, at the peak of their games for so long.

Pumpkin head or not, he deserves a pat on the back for giving us legends we can take into our elder years with the likes of the two boys I just mentioned and Big Bucks, who is heading down the same road of immortality when he makes it four World Hurdles.

Signing in to the 'cried' club, could not believe it. Cried maybe too dramatic a word, but a few tears of sheer delight. Go on Kauto, you superstar!

agree with all of the above, incedible performance, and ive gotta own up to being one of the doubters. wasnt able to be there but it made for unbelevable tv viewing. like i said after the gold cup in march both kauto and denman had long run in trouble at the bottom of the hill approx 3 miles and it was perhaps just the hill and the extra 2 furlongs that found them out, kauto went away from long run on the run in yesterday. just a performance out of the top draw

Does Kauto's BHA rating of 174 seem reasonable? Looks a bit stingy to me. It appears Weird Al was rated 164 for both the Charlie Hall and the Betfair when he beat Time for Rupert 3.5 l in the first (giving 3 lb), and 15 l in the second (off levels). Rating Kauto 174 also means Long Run ran to 166 which seems a touch low to me (compared with his OR 182).

Timeform now have them Long Run 180/Kauto 178.
