perhaps nicholls is being sneaky....he's been burning up the gallops and jumping like an old pro.....and he doesn't want anyone else putting him in their ttf lists

yeh,hes an admirable sort, and to me hes what i call a proper Cheltenham horse. The Arkle is right up his street.Early days of course but i can see him going the Arkle and then Gold Cup route.

Once Al Ferof had won the Supreme and Nicholls eschewed prolonging a hurdling career I had him firmly in my Arkle 'sights'. However, I had 2 doubts: a) his ability to jump fences (had looked a guessy hurdler at times), and b) whether PN would campaign him over further (talk of not knowing what his best trip was). For me, today's impressive performance removed both of these doubts, and he's now the nucleus of my Festival portfolio.
Arkle : 2pts win Al Ferof @ 7/1

Shaping up to be the clash of the festival already imo.
Two very exciting, very classy hurdlers who both looked like improving for fences. I was equally impressed with the two of them on debut. I personally couldnt be strong on either as I respect them both greatly. Wont be a huge AP punting race for those reasons for me, but good luck those who make their choice and bet like men!

both very impressive....al ferrof gives his fences more air than peddlers who reminded me of the way best mate fenced....low and quick....i'd have to be with peddlers at the moment.

Howdi - so was the Tatts/Club side. Saturday was by far the worst of the three days for me for all sorts of reasons (including the crowd and the quality of the racing).

Nick Luck asked Mark Howard if Peddlers would get beaten this season!! As if that aint bad enough,Howard replied only if he falls!!
Why do i bother watching??

Apparently cos hes a higher rated hurdler than Al Ferof, then Al Ferof cannot beat him over fences.
Someone tell these clowns that the best Hurdlers dont always make the best chasers, the best chasers do,and none of us,inc these 2 clowns, know which will be better.
Sorry,but it winds me up!!
Rant over

i must admit al ferof just keeps impressing me every time he runs, the majority of his wins last season were workman like rather than spectacular and i think he's been under rated by everyone (including myself) because of the style in which he wins,he will probably never win a grade 1 on the bridle like some of his opponents, but hes as tough as they come and its not always the spectacular sorts who are superstars,if Cue Card, peddlers cross, menorah etc etc were to face this horse tomorrow i doubt al ferof would be fav,but i have to say id definitly be siding with af,pinged every fence on his debut which really impressed me more than the others mentioned, looking forward to seeing him through out the season and he'll be a tough nut to crack where ever he turns up imo

no...but peddlers starting position over hurdles isn't a disadvantage is it..plus the old maxim of everything he (peddlers cross) achieved over hurdles would be a bonus...very much applies to this horse.

budd totally agree, howard really needs to get his head out of pc's áss,he put him in his horses to follow last season and again this season so i wouldnt expect anything else from him!!

i know Duffy,i aint got anything against PC,but its such a blinkered attitude, and right now i feel like smashing Howards smug face to bits. Now you've started me off again!!

Doesn't look to be anything in the race to worry him. Conditions - heavy ground and the wind (if it keeps up) might be more of an issue. Haydock used to be a really tough test for chasers but I've not been for about 15 years, so don't know if this is still the case.

the thing with PC that I keep coming back to is his record
11 runs under rules 10 wins 1 second
second place was in Champion Hurdle where he gave Hurricane Fly a run for his money and that is 165+ form
balance of probability says it is unlikely there are many horses in his generation that have that level of ability because it is very rare to be that good.
Of course jumping on the day in the Arkle is going to be crucial in determining the result but at this stage I am only trying to estimate as accurately as possible the potential peak performance of the runners if they all jump efficiently
Sprinter Sacre's debut run with a Topspeed of 146 lets me think he could be a 160+ chaser this season and I have PC around 155+ with the in running comment "easily". I think they are closely matched.

Good luck with that one Judo!!
Novice chasers 4 months before they race each other, thats bl00dy difficult.

My strategy will be to wait til near the race and see if I think one or other has a clear edge (and by that I mean 7lbs plus) over the others in the expected level of performance I think they will produce in the race. It is still too early to say so I am merely monitoring nd assessing as we go. As I say at this stage I give the edge to Peddlers but the other two have a large P and could improve enough
No bet yet

nah wait til I'm sure of an edge, the going, the field size, likely front runners... and then have a proper bet
and only then it could all be as tight as a gnats chuff
