A very taking performance just there to follow up his debut demolition. One jump in particular, I think it was 2-out, he really took off and jumped it beautifully.

Im sure plans are still fluid- love the horse but surely something with more pace will beat it over 2m5f?
Why is the general idea that this horse is paceless?
In his last race against simonsig they went a crawl through the early part of the race and when they quickened that horse looked to be travelling all over him, yet he beat him off comfortably in the end whilst they pulled along way clear of the others. The horse easily has the best form on offer over 2 and a half miles for any novice in England or Ireland on tracks that are much easier than Cheltenham and off much slower paces than he will get in the Neptune. He would go off a very worthy favourite for either race (in what looks a novice year with very little strength in depth) but I don't see the need to step him up to an unknown trip and what I consider to be a less presigeous prize.
Also, where is Martin Pipe Returns to price up his eventual target?

Last yr's Neptune turned into a sprint. I would have thought the Albert Bartlett would be the more ideal race at this stage.

Denman, after all, had won the Challow at (that yr) Cheltenham over 2m4 by 21L - why would he (given that Ballymore trial) chose to run over 3m at the Festival? He won next time out at the easy Bangor over 3, but in that race Black Jack Ketchum ducked the dual by being pulled out on the morning. BJK won the Brit very impressivly that year, so at the time it appeared sensible to keep them apart. Not many people then were suggesting if Denman had run in the Brit he would have beaten BJK. BJK had also won over 3m at Cheltenham impressively under a penalty in December. I also recall Nicholls saying Denman had been devilishly hard to get right that spring, and looked better in his coat 2 weeks after the Festival defeat. I certainly would not have blamed the trip alone. BJK was evens in the Brit and Denman was 11/10 - I dont think too much went wrong really.

Barnesy- I agree with you, I don't believe Fingal Bay is short of pace at all. My opinion is, he is just a horse that is going to prefer cut in the ground his breeding and action tells me this. If the Neptune was run on soft I think he would be a 2-1 chance now but the race probably won't be and the longer race where stamina will be at a premium will favour him more on the ground I would say.
Nick Williams horse Diamond Harry had the same high class form and profile going into the Neptune and always looked not short of pace in his build up. He loved the soft too. The trainer always regretted not running in the Albert Bartlett as the race is run at a different tempo and with lesser opposition.

Hi Festivalfanatic - I agree re Fingal, I think I would prefer to see him (on decent ground) in the longer race.

In his book, Ruby blames himself for getting Denman beaten in that race.

Harry, to me he didn't look like he was benefitting from the ground at Newbury. Imo it was his least impressive run over hurdles and the rest were on faster ground. I'm not up on the breeding side of things, maybe you could tell me what about his breeding suggests he wants soft?
Well others will know more about breeding than me (and hopefully they will contribute) as I'm more a flat man and still learning after 18 years. For what it is worth, he is a Kings Theatre and his progeny are tending to be better with cut in the ground although a couple of his best jumpers Menorah and Captain Chris have proved this to be slightly wrong as both have performed well on good jumping ground, although there mothers were by Strong Gale a decent sire of good ground horses...like I say I'm no professional on this subject but just an observation I have made with the sire Kings Theatre.

One thing I will add for the Fingal fans without going on, is for Phillip Hobbs to say he maybe the best he has had, is a huge compliment to the horse considering the horses he has in his barn. And his form certainly is top class novice form.
For me he would be a banker of the meeting in the Albert Bartlett but if he runs in the Neptune he would be a banker bet but only in the place market.

Just watch FB's win at Cheltenham....firstly I think 2m5f will be fine in the Neptune for him, they recorded a good time that day. For FB to hit the second last like he did would have stopped most horses, and yes he had to be shaken up, but once over the last he was striding away from a good horse in Barbatos. (has beaten him twice now and who has won at Cheltenham since).....this horse has class, speed, stamina and has a heart to fight if he needs to. Its all there....keep it simple, go to the race distance he knows.
I think he'll be better in a better race and all his form points to him being the best staying novice in England but I was mighty impressed by Make Your Mark in admittedly only a novice (or even maiden) hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas but the style was very smooth and he went straight to 2nd favourite for The Neptune so presumably he's one of Mullins' best. I wouldn't like to try and second guess the trainer but wouldn't have thought he'd want the guts ripped out of it over 3 miles as it looked like a horse of massive potential in the long term.
Booster....agree with you about Make your Mark....but who knows with Mullins...he may not even go to Cheltenham....may save him for Punchs, but even saying that I think FB is a name we will be talikng about for a few years and I feel will win the Neptune well (not easy but well)
Fingal is going to apparently have another run. Will this be one too many come the big day? He puts everything into each run.

Hobbs had been expecting to get another run into the horse he believes could be the best he has ever trained.
But now he proposes to give the bay a break before bringing him back fresh in March.
Writing in his Mirror Racing column, the 'Master Trainer' admits he was satisfied with his unbeaten hurdler's less-than-spectacular win at Newbury last Saturday, when the hot favourite appeared to be all-out to beat 25-1 outsider Bally Rock by a length.

With no news at all about Simonsig and what race, if any, he's going for, I've also taken some of the remaining 12/1 on Make Your Mark - no worthwhile form in the book, but he does look very smart and his trainer and owner have a decent record in the race so I'd like think he'll be aimed at it.
If he wins the Delloite impressively he'll be vying for favourtism, and could easily go off a stupid price like So Young did last year (especially if Mulllins has another treble on the first day).

About Simonsig....so many on here think he is bound for the Supreme. In Mark Howard's book, One Jump Ahead, it is suggested that the best probable distance for the Sig is 2m4f-3m......if this is indeed the case then the race for him has to be the Albert Bartlett....surely its the easy one on paper with Fingal Bay opting for the Neptune and a fistful of hot ones in the supreme. Nothing at the optimum distance has shone as head and shoulders above the rest, and he could be just that. Come Mr Henderson give us a clue or if Mr Howard is out there can you quantify the probable distance mentioned in your book. (and no I have had no ante post bet in this race...yet)
Shakespeare - plans for horses change all the time so I wouldn't get too bogged down by what was written in a book published 3 months ago. IMO the one race Simonsig will absolutely not being going for is the Albert Bartlett. I also think it would be pointless of Henderson to try and take on Fingal again in the Neptune, he was comprehensively seen off at Sandown. I am biased given have bet him for the supreme but he shows so much pace it would surely be the best option for him.
Simonsig is owned by Mr Bartlett so, like Oscar Wells running in the owners race at Ffos Las, it may still be a possibility, but on the limited racecourse evidence there is no way he wants a gruelling 3 miles.

I've been a bit worried as well UP, I've got more on this horse at Cheltenham than any other.
However, his price has remained fairly strong in the Supreme and we know how quick Hendo's staff like to lay one if they're not going for it

Also, I don't think its impossible to reverse the form with Fingal, on what was only his second start over hurdles. Stacks and stacks of improvement in him imo
I think Fingal Bay is the type who will always pull out a bit more when required and really cannot see Simonsig turning the form round. Simon has already run to a rating high enough to have won most of the Supremes in recent history. I just don't understand why Henderson would go for the Neptune and finish second, rather than win a Supreme.
I agree mate that Fingal will be difficult to pass, but Simonsig is pretty much 3 times the price with only 2.5 lengths to find.

I was mightily impressed with Fingal at Chepstow and Cheltenham. However, I feel what he did at Newbury was very worrying. If he idles like that at the Festival he seems most unlikley to get a second chance at winning the race as he was able to do in the Challow. Presumably, they'll try to avoid getting to the front for as long as possible, which should be easier at the Festival and he was in front for a long way at Newbury, but that can be a dangerous tactic. I think he'll be a vulnerable favourite to something progressive and cleverly ridden.
Yes it was stront though I suspect Battonier is very progressive.
wat a horse 9/2 is such a gd price, i really fancy him i love this horse i really think he has it all and can go right to the top. I think he is with a master in phillip hobbs aswell i have never seen a better trainer of a hurdler he gets them jumping so slick and fast. ironic as this horse is going to some 3 mile chaser. He first came to my attention at chepstow and have loved him ever since u can just see all he wants to do is please richard johnson(watch his ears in the closing stages of a race), to me the horse was mortified he let johnson down two out at cheltenham and to recover and jump the last and bound away up the hill was exceptional.The piece of form that really stamps him down as top class imo is the sandown race where he beat a field that imsure will prove to be quality. Simonsig is a horse i really rate aswell so much so that i cldnt bring myself to back either horse that day.thankfully they both ran terrific races and to me they both enhanced there reputations.Simonsig is a rattling gd bet in the supreme i really think he is a cut above the opposition and i rate him very highly i think he could develop into a champion hurdle contender next season. so for fingal to beat him that day was a brilliant effort. TAKE NOTE AND BACK BOTH IN THERE PROSPECTIVE RACES.my confident cheltenham trixie is completed by long run whom i think posted a fine effort in the K.G the way he valiantly chased home kauto and hassled him to the line suggests to me he will get his revenge in the gold cup. his jumping seemed alot better at kempton than at haydock to.wld like to hear ur views please.regards kieran

Boston Bob will beat Fingal Bay if they meet at Festival,could see Fingal Bay going for longer race imo.
Batonnier earned a quote of 16-1 for the Neptune Management Novices’ Hurdle after beating the highly-rated Broadbackbob in the dress-rehearsal over the same course and distance, and Alan confirmed that he will now go straight to the Festival.

no disputing boston bob is a gd horse but i love a battler and i dont think fingal will let him past, boston will loom large approaching the last but wont be able to get past up the hill (iv read the script)....really cant see batonier being involved think that was a very weak race for the grade on the weekend secret edge a close third (had to work quite hard to win at fontwell) i just dont think its gd form at all....looks a match to me ??
I think Fingal Bay is lay of the festival. Wouldn't touch him, when I saw him in the paddock at Cheltenham, I wasn't that taken by him either. Would rather lay him to place than back him to win to be quite honest.

I can see Fingal Bay going where Boston Bob doesnt go. Then again PH did successfully take on Dunguib 2 years back.
Fingal Bay will run in the Neptune - that's already been decided, I don't understand why there's still debate and I strongly believe he'll win. Boston Bob is the only conceivable danger, but he looked to need every yard of the trip to win last Sunday, and that was in soft ground. I think he'll end up in the Albert Bartlett, I think Simonsig will run in the Supreme and I really think there's a chance the Neptune could really cut up and only a field of 8 or 9 will take their chance, in which case Fingal Bay will be nearer Evens than the 5/1 currently available which makes him and outstanding ante post bet.

However, the Minehead handler now believes he has enough experience, and is not keen on stepping up to three miles for the first time in the white-hot heat of the Festival.
"We thought about giving him another run but I think he'll go straight to Cheltenham now," said Philip Hobbs.
"If that's the case, it looks more and more likely he'll run in the Neptune, as you wouldn't want to run him in the Albert Bartlett without having run him over three miles."

Winner of all his three starts under Rules, the five-year-old won the Slaney Novice Hurdle at Naas last time out, opening his account in graded company without coming under pressure, and runner-up Lyreen Legend franked the form when chasing home Willie Mullins' impressive prospect Boston Bob last weekend.
Meade said: "I don't think he's going to run in the Deloitte, we're looking at going straight to Cheltenham. I've been very happy with him since Naas, I just haven't spoken to his owner for a bit to confirm it."
He added: "I've always thought he'd be happier on better ground but he seems to have handled soft ground well enough.
"It can be a danger expecting them to improve for better ground, so I'm certainly not going to say he doesn't handle it soft.
"We've got other entries in the Deloitte, but we haven`t firmed up plans yet.
"The likes of Formidableopponent and Il Fenomeno are under consideration but Il Fenomeno might run this weekend (in the Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle). If he doesn't run this weekend he'll run in the Deloitte."

"It can be a danger expecting them to improve for better ground, so I'm certainly not going to say he doesn't handle it soft.
"We've got other entries in the Deloitte, but we haven`t firmed up plans yet.
"The likes of Formidableopponent and Il Fenomeno are under consideration but Il Fenomeno might run this weekend (in the Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle). If he doesn't run this weekend he'll run in the Deloitte."
Hobbs said on Sporting Life a few weeks back the plan was straight to the Neptune, then he confirmed on At The Races Saturday, no more run, freshen him up for the Neptune.

The double entry and the threat of Boston Bob are the only things holding his price, although on here they're both clear favourite for the Neptune & the Albert Bartlett, which is about as good an indication as you're going to get.

Off the top of my head, Noel Meade victories at the Cheltenham Festival...3!? Monksland!? Nah!
Dwm not sure I would read too much into that statistic. However he has trained the Supreme/Neptune winner 3 times since 2000 which is as good or better than any other trainer including PN and WM.
A very wise man once told me you follow Noel Meade's horses up to Christmas & then leave them alone. It's how he trains them, they're always better early on in the campaign.
DWM that's not a bad plan re Meade's domestic runners but Arklearkle's point above is valid. His record in these races is bl**dy decent given the lesser numbers he's had to play with - with an awful lot more darts thrown at these contests someone like NJ Henderson has won zip over the same period.
Fingal Bay is the one to beat. But having been with Batonnier the last two runs he looks really progressive. I was keen on Barbatos, hence why Batonnier came to light in the first place. At 20/1 I am growing the opinion that he is one of the best each way bets around at the moment.

Does look to be progressing nicely and the keenness shown in his earlier races appears to be a distant memory...not sure he would be good enough to win what looks a pretty good renewal but he is going the right way and there are worse 20-1 shots that don't have the progressive profile this horse has...

THE exciting Fingal Bay looks set to stay at 2m5f for a tilt at theNeptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, trainer Philip Hobbs has said.
The unbeaten six-year-old figures at the head of the market for that race and the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle over 3m but Hobbs is keen to stay over the shorter trip.
"It has to be the Neptune Novices' Hurdle," the trainer said. "I am sure he will go three [miles] but we don't know that for certain. As far as the ground is concerned anything on the softer side of good will be fine. I feel that softer ground plays to his strength more but I don't think it matters.
"There was not really a race after the Challow but we did not really want to run him again. He has had a short break and he will go straight to Cheltenham."

As much as I think BB is a fantastic horse I'd have slight reservations whether he'd be quick enough just with the sheer size of him. Also there is a ? over the ground
I'm not saying he'll run in the Albert Bartlett! Connections won't send him over if it's rattling fast ground on the Friday, that's the concern at the moment which is why he's available at a decent price for the race! He won't run in the Neptune though, it's only under consideration if it comes up heavy which it won't!

Bud I think after careful consideration you will see dwn and I are agreed that BB wont run in AB-on my account because he could be exposed to out and out stayers on dwns because he will never get the ground.I think the age is irrelevant.I note he is now 7/2 for the Neptune
Re 7yo, very few fancied 7yo in last 9 years, most notable Finians Rainbow, Refinement, Mad Max (11/2-6/1 shots), none at 5/1 or under.
Muscle injury that must put him on easy street for a few days at least. As he hasn't run since the Challow they would be looking to get some serious work into him in the run up to the race. If he pitches up, every likelihood that he will be short of peak fitness.

Common traditional veterinary approaches for affected horses includerest and anti-inflammatory medication with phenylbutazone (‘Bute’), pentosan sulphate (course of 3-4 injections a week apart and then monthly to three months) and injections of cortisone around the sacro-iliac joint (requires a 20cm needle and ultrasound guidance). This may be combined with work over poles or on hills with or without anti-inflammatory medication after 3-12 months of paddock rest.
Veterinary, chiropractic and osteopathic treatments are often used to good effect to stimulate the local muscles and the horse’s brain to re-initiate normal muscle tension and movement of the sacro-iliac joints. Muscle release therapy may also be used to ‘turn off’ those muscles exhibiting abnormal spasm that have not receded despite the original injury being resolved.
Veterinary acupuncture is also used to help reset the muscle balance and function of the sacro-iliac joint and to encourage resolution of sacro-iliac ligament and local muscle attachment tears that have failed to fully resolve and are still causing reflex pain well after the initial injury. Prolotherapy, using local anaesthetic and a mild irritant is particularly effective in treating this major part of SIJC dysfunction.
Exercising over poles on the ground and later elevated on bricks and gentle work on hills, especially going diagonally across gentle slopes, has been found to be useful in strengthening the SIJC. Specific programs need to be tailored by your practitioner according to the individual case. Hindleg stretches are also used to encourage shortened muscles to lengthen.
Good results have been achieved from combining veterinary, chiropractic, acupuncture and prolotherapy. Most oftenhorses are given only a short rest (days) and are gradually brought back to normal levels of work over two to 16 weeks. Improvement is usually apparent after the first treatment and usually two to four treatments a fortnight apart are needed to get the dysfunction under control. Ideally pole exercises at home are incorporated, but good results can often be seen even if this is left out of the recovery program. Often the difference in height of the middle tips of the pelvis remains the same but the function of the lower back, hindlegs and SIJC return to normal or near normal.

Stopping a horse falling in the paddock is impossible but there are plenty of other options that can be utilised to reduce the likelihood of injury to the sacro-iliac joint complex. The most important preventative measure is to maintain the horse’s good back posture and CORE STRENGTH, which is vital for supporting and protecting the SIJ complex. Good horse posture and core strength come from many things – good nutrition, plenty of exercise, well balanced and comfortable feet, good saddle fit, good riding technique, good rider weight/horse core strength ratio (note ...not rider/horse weight ratio – two very different things!), comfortable bit, teeth and jaw joints, comfortable wither, girth and back. Horses that drop their back or belly under the weight of a rider or an ill fitting saddle become disengaged behind, tend to work on the forehand and have poor core strength. Vertical casting rails 1.2m apart in boxes can prevent horses straining themselves to get way from a box wall by giving the horse something to push against, making getting up relatively easy. (Some of the worst sacro-iliac joint complex damage I have seen came from a casting accident.)
Sacro-iliac joint complex injury and dysfunction is a very common issue for horses across all disciplines and without adequate rehabilitation and attention to postural and core strength issues it can remain a continuous or recurring cause of pain, resulting in poor or decreased performance. Trainer's wife said on RUK today at Sandown ''unlikely'' to make it, needs 7-10 days rest. Owner not a fan Aintree either apparently.
Had a decent lump on e/w (and his presence meant I hadn't backed Simonsig for this either), and he's in plenty of my multiples as well
Connections of Fingal Bay are downbeat about the prospects of him lining up in the Neptune Investment Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Fingal Bay had been the long-term ante-post favourite for the race but has lost that position in recent days to the Willie Mullins-trained Boston Bob.
The six-year-old is unbeaten in all five of his races to date, including the Challow Hurdle at Newbury last time out, but has met with a setback.
His jockey Richard Johnson said: "It's not great news that he's not 100%, but at the same time he's a very exciting horse and it would be silly to run him unless he was right."
Hobbs' wife, Sarah, said Fingal Bay is, at this stage, an "unlikely participant" at the Cheltenham Festival.
She told Racing UK: "We've had physio on him - it's a hamstring to the back and we're just trying to treat him.
"These things usually take about 10 days to two weeks so it's going to be touch and go for Cheltenham. At this stage he's an unlikely participant really.
"The trouble is his owner Roger Skan is abroad at the moment and we haven't been able to get hold of him or his wife so they don't know yet.
"Roger doesn't like Aintree, he's had a few horses there go wrong so he might go to Punchestown or maybe something here in the future."

Hobbs said: "Fingal Bay will unfortunately miss the Cheltenham Festival due to his setback as we are just not going to be able to get him ready in time and it is a blow for all concerned.
"It was always going to be close but he was checked over on Tuesday by the vets and they said he needed another week on the easy list and that would have taken us to within days of the race."
However, Hobbs stated that Fingal Bay would recover in time to run at the Aintree and Punchestown festivals later this spring.
He said: "We should have no problems with those meetings as hopefully he will be fully recovered by then."
