Might be suited by one of the soft ground long distance Irish Chases like the Lexus but not convinced about his Gold Cup credentials yet til I see more evidence. As you say, might be a trade opportunity if he comes out say in the James Nicholson Chase and goes close.

Not a horse I really thought that much of, until its last couple of runs. Had he stood up he may have won them both. Therein lies the problem he seems to always make a mistake and fall, although the last race he was brought down by a loose horse. Still a fairly young horse and not one to write off yet, could well improve and if he learns to concentrate could be a contender

I was thinking about this one, but would want triple figures if I was to back him tbh, rather than the 60 odd he was when I last checked.

Still young, may have won the RSA if he hadn't fallen, he would have been no bigger than 20/1 had he won it. Transition period for top chasers with Denman and Kauto not what they were and IC out. Most others aside from Long Run with something to prove. If Quel Esprit learns to concentrate and gets a couple of wins under his belt he will be a lot shorter in the betting, and would have a decent chance

I disagree about him wanting soft ground.  I think his runs on better ground lookm good (apart from the obvious falls)....I know a lot will say that he has not jump well and the evidence is there to concur with that but he was still travelling extremely well in his last three and like has already been said could well have won them.......but I agree with some comments.  I guess thats why his price is what it is one here.  Is there value in the opinion he could be very much there at the finish IF he jumps round....I for one will take the price and trade it if he comes down to 20's or less.

Howdi....I think your right...I ought to ignore the likes of Mullins when he says he is a proper horse with Gold Cup class....stupid of me to think he would know anything about winning at Cheltenham!!!!

he never ever suggested he was a 20-1 shot for the gold cup ....big difference!

you also want to watch mullins statements not always designed to help punters imo. ie/ mdhag and thosand stars going jumping last season.

MDH did go jumping i'm led to believe, if you can actually call what he did jumping

Has there been any news on the other horses who rain in last years RSA and their plans for this year? Wayward Prince, Master of the Hall etc etc

Quito De La Roque didnt run in Sun Alliance but won at Aintree and Punchestown stays and jumps all day even on good ground which was against him last 2 starts, may have slipped under radar a little but big engine!

Anyone dismissing QE for the Gold Cup being rather shortsighted imo.
Going well in the RSA and a lot bigger price then some of the RSA horses.

i agree QE is a dark one...i keep thinking back to how well he was going in the sun alliance when coming down....then i try to temper my enthusiasm that he's the type of horse i'll go skint backing....always looking for that one big run i think he's got in there somewhere.

if u think this horse has got a chance in the gold cup ur crazy, everytime it put with decent horse its jumping is found out, never got round in a grade 1, except the bumper race at chelt, when got beat a country mile by dunguib, for me i dont think jumping is up to scratch when in top company,  and his record rouns cheltenham is awful, not for me this not at any price

well you can back at current price without parting with too much cash,and imo we will see him at a far lower price in the following weeks and months

well Denman,you make valid points re his jumping,but he is a horse that if he gets it right he just may have the class to figure,I have seen him jump fences well and also seen him not,but at current price i aint got a problem with a small punt in case he gets it right when it matters.

Would have won at Punchestown if that forking loose horse hadn't hampered him!!!

i would want that price even if he lined up on the day, good chance he wont, and if he does take his chance price wont be dramitcally lower, id rather back sizing europe at the prices, think he'll step up in trip all season, love to see him run in gold cup, as i feel hes got speed and stamina

pretty obvious to me that if QE turns up on the day he will be a lot shorter.I would think his presence means hes had a good seasaon and earned the right to run.
Pretty sure mullins would not run him otherwise in a gold cup.
SE should run in the QM,hes a 2 miler of the highest order as proved last season.Totally unproven at 3m 2f,and the owners are mad if they go Gold Cup.

Quel Esprit is rated 145.  What a weight for the Hennessy.  Probably favourite if it turns up.

Run in 4 chases, completed 1.

pls keep quiet and let this one drift out to 100 when the gd old fashioned english hype machine kicks in following charlie hall/ bf chase/ henny etc... at this stage 60 aint a great price.

Flat out and Quel Esprit will both win big races this year imo, I reckon flat out is Mullin's best chaser, maybe he could be a Gold Cup horse.

Quel espirit isnt entered for the hennessy.

interesting to see how he shapes up this season,starting today,and hopefully a nice run with a clear round.

Good to see him get round without putting a foot wrong, and finished off the race well against a rival who was race fit.

If Quel Esprit and Flat Out can put in clean rounds of jumping, I think they both have good potential (I see Flat Out as a good ew shout in the Champion Chase - he was right at the top of the Arkle betting last year).

Some really good second season chasers for the Gold Cup this year - maybe aim Quel Esprit for the William Hill on day one, with a high 140's - low 150's mark?

Can`t see him getting in that h/cap with that sort of mark,think he`ll rated much higher than that come next spring,much more of a concern for me would be his record on ground better than yeilding to soft,with his need for very easy going think that the festival may not be for him what with the obsession of good ground at the festival.

I think it's a myth that the horse needs softish ground to produce the goods. The good ground didn't seem to be bothering him much in the RSA. Fix jumping and you've got a serious horse. Nice start in that regard today. Also feel that he needs a regular pilot. He had Emmeth Mullins, Townend and Ruby taking turns last season. This is hardly fair on the horse espicially one who seems to be crying out for a little continuity. Give Townend the gig and leave him there, seems to get on best.

In the 5 day decs for December Gold Cup Cheltenham Saturday.  A) Will he run? B)If yes, has to go close/win off this rating if to be considered for the Gold Cup or Ryanair at the festival. C)Can he stand up in a competitive field.

I would back him at current 14's if he were a runner!

If he was any where near 14/1 on the day I'd back him.

However backing Willie mullins antepost is an easy way to the poor house!!!

He's certainly one of the very interesting ones but shockster's question C is the main one for me.

I've always liked this horse and agree that his ability should give him a great shout off 148, but he has raced at Cheltenham four times and not really covered himself in glory. If Mullins does send him I would take it as a very positive assessment of his chances for the simple reason that I can't believe a competitive, fast-run handicap at Cheltenham is the ideal next port of call in terms of building his confidence and developing into a very good Graded runner. That to me, on the flip side, would mean that team Mullins think he is a lot better than 148.

Must say, however I look at the race, I can't help feel that Divers is going to take a lot of beating. Am surprised the 9-1 is holding up on him.

Really want to know if Quel Esprit is an intended runner for this. Much better than a 148 horse if he can get round imo. Divers will be my other bet for this.
