Leading hope Mossey Joe ineligible for RSA Chase

The eight-year-old, who has won three of his four chases, is regarded as a novice in Ireland this season, although he won a novice hunter chase at Tipperary in April 2010.

However, that victory renders him ineligible for novice chases in Britainfrom the end of October this year.

Noel O’Brien, senior jumps handicapper with the Turf Club, explained: "In Ireland a horse is eligible for novice chases if he has not won a chase prior to the start of the season, other than one hunter chase within the previous two seasons.

"It used to be a similar situation in Britain, but that changed about a year and a half ago so Mossey Joe will not be eligible for the RSA Chase."

Mossey Joe has won two chases this season, landing a novice event at Killarney and a conditions chase at Cork last month.
He finished fifth on his most recent start at Down Royal last Friday when he was clear when sprawling badly on landing three out.

His trainer Declan McNamara said on Tuesday: “We’ll be making a decision in the next week or so but it’s more than likely the horse will be going for a break.”

**** on Wednesday announced they would refund ante-post bets on Mossey Joe.

"We had considerable interest after his very impressive chase performances -we thought he could have certainly been a contender next March.

"However, like our customers, we were completely unaware that due to vagaries in the rules he was ineligible and have therefore refunded all bets," said spokesman Leon Blanche.

"vagaries in the rules"?? Aren't the rules clear?

7.3 In respect of any steeple chase which is run in The Jump Season 2011/2012 and is not within Paragraph 7.2 [Novice Hunter Chases], a horse is a Novice if the horse has not won a steeple chase before April 24th, 2011.

7.7 Paragraphs 7.3 to 7.5 apply to a steeple chase or hurdle race which is run in the period starting on April 24th, 2011 and ending on April 28th 2012.

He won a chase at Tip on 29/4/10.

What's the betting you'll have to request a refund of your stake from Spoils?

Any time I've had a void bet with this firm I've had to contact customer services to have the stake refunded
