Ted was asked just before the off today what he fancied in the Gold Cup, He said he was an 'aul softie' and fancied Kauto, what he said just after about supporting Kauto sounded like a lovely turn of phrase, but I couldn't quite decipher it, anyone know what he said?

You need to learn we are all the same, if Nicholls talks sense he does, if he doesnt he doesnt. If Walsh talks sense he does, if he doesnt he doesnt. There are no other criteria in judging things, people are people some are right some are wrong (depending on your opinion). The way to progress is treat everyone the same.
Report eric_morris March 18, 2011 7:58 PM GMT
My opinion is Walsh is fantastic for the game, he has a great personality, an opinion, is very knowledgable and most importantly flexible to change from old school , maybe via his son, racing needs people like Walsh in future and his son who is the best jumps jockey on the planet.

...and you couldnt find a more down to earth great bloke than Ruby Walsh .. my favourite jockey on all codes. You could take the p1ss out of him and he wouldnt care, he is above that he knows what is important, you can see it in his personality.

Have to agree about Ted Walsh. Bloke seems hard work at the best of times but still head and shoulders above the rest of the dinosaurs at C4. When oh when are McGrath and Francome going to be pensioned off
Report lapsy pa March 18, 2011 8:10 PM GMT
Ted was a fine amateur jockey, not a bad trainer, speaks his mind without  fear of upsetting the pc lot, better insight into game than most other ch4 pundits.Good guy.
Report sintonian March 18, 2011 8:14 PM GMT
Ted is fine imo.

It's the women on the show who talk utter crap, but you'd expect that really.
Report Paddy Hair March 18, 2011 11:56 PM GMT
Ted was on TV long before Ruby made it big time and always seemed to speak sense. My brother and some of his mates met him on a train to Aintree he chatted with them all the way and was good company, joked and had the craic with them. That was the year the National was cancelled and ran on the monday when Lord Gyllene won.So unless he has changed in the mean time, he seems a decent bloke. On Thursday he slagged off Ruby for droppong his whip on Big Bucks calling it a school boy error and when pulled up by Francome said i don't call anyone else but if there is anyone i can call its Ruby ( or words to that effect).I also believe he had a go at Ruby when he got beaten by Best Mate when riding Commanche Court , saying you'll have the chance to win many Gold Cups but this might be my only chance and you bolloxed it up (or words to that effect). I think with an old man like that you are never going to get to big for your boots.

ted walsh was the leading amateur rider in ireland for the best part of 20 yr.he trained a grand national winner,a triumph hurdle winner and was within a hairs breath of winning a gold cup.the man is a ledgend and were lucky to have him.hes very insightful and has a unique and honest way of telling it as it is.

Report Just So March 23, 2011 9:52 AM GMT
last season's Lexus at Leopardstwon- finish fought out by What A Friend and Money Trix, clear of Joncol. barely had the two English-trained horses gone past in front when Ted declared on RTE - 'well that's a right kick in the town halls for the Irish chances in the Gold Cup'. Tells it like it is and certainly not clueless.
Report topfarrier March 23, 2011 10:22 AM GMT
Ted Walsh is a absolute gentleman and we are lucky to have him on RTE all year.
I will never forget an incident a couple of years ago when Aiden O'Brien was trying to persude George Washington to go out onto the track and we had to listen to Robert Hall marvelling about what a wonderful horseman Aiden was and how difficult the horse must be to train,at which point Ted retorts-Nothing a couple tears across the hole wouldn't sort out! Most British pundits are even worse when it comes to Irish form and parochial is the flipside of arrogant so value indeed.

as an irish man who watches rte racing at which ted is a fixture, he is an excellent commentator on the sport. Gives straight views, will tell u when he thinks a horse has no chance and has brilliant knowledge of the irish game in respect of owners and trainers. I love it when he mentions the local gaa club or parish the owners are from. He is doing this job long b4 ruby became a cheltenham god, and he should continue to do the job, unless ruby wants it when he retires. Imagine this scenario, Ruby buys stables off his dad, how hard would the haggling be there. Would love to be fly on wall for that. I am proud to be an irish man and I am proud that Ted represents fairly the irish people at cheltenham.

Report tinkler March 31, 2011 7:35 PM BST
When he used to ride if the money was down he used to ride like a man possessed. He nearly won a gold cup as
a trainer and did win the national so knows how to train. I thought he bigged up Imperial Commander before
the GC saying he looked great. He's no tipster ,but you cann't be good at everything. The way his kids
conduct thenselves is a real credit to him as well. Racing needs characters like ted walsh.
