I backed him and thought he gave it a great ride as Thomas did with Denman. He made sure Kauto Star jumped well and ensured he was close enough and not in danger of having to make up ground by letting the leaders get away. Face it at eleven he is a little bit slower and would not have beaten the younger Long Run today even if a little less use had been made of him.

Who would have believed that Kauto would have been in front a mile out.Thought it was an inspired ride and Kauto jumped the better for it.You could not have asked for more from horse or jockey

Getting Kauto around these days without making a howler or two along the way is an acheivement in itself. Hopefully KS will be retired now.

Yep fully agree, with the retirement, both he and Denman, have flogged their guts out, for the trainers, owners and punters alike, let them go and graze in a field with each other, happily ever after.

Thought this forum was closing but as its staying might as well post.
Taking at face value that Ruby said in the build up that he thought long run needed soft ground, it seems pretty straightforward that his pre-race plan can't possibly have been to gallop the legs off denman and IC. And it's a bit too embarassing for me to sit in an armchair and criticise a world class jockey so the only conclusion i see is that the horse gave him all the signals that he was happy in his rhythm and ruby didn't feel he had the option of upsetting that by taking a pull. With hindsight now, i dont think that was the quickest way round the course for kauto and it ended up looking like a Aiden o'brien style pacemaker run, setting it up for long run to break the course record. All credit to the first two home, no idea if the result could have been any different. I don't get why people thought it was a great ride though - to me it was either a wrong decision taken or there werent any options and it was just an average ride. |
