Something I was pondering earlier. It's almost taken as a given that the Irish money drives down the price of the Irish horses on the day. All the times I've been to Cheltenham, I can't remember speaking to an Irishman who had backed an English horse at the festival. Does it happen on any scale?

One Irish so called journalist on Racing Post, allegedly has never backed English trained horse in all his years. So imagine he has missed hundreds of winners through ignorance!

Of course we do! If Kauto wins I will behave most indecorously. Time For Rupert is the nap, though

Cuts both ways don't it? Agree with Goretski, only thing that holds me back is I don't have as good a handle on the Irish form as I like to think I have on the form this side of the water.

Already backed a couple of Irish horses though.

you'd have to be a bit of an idiot to exclude english horses from your picks just because you were irish and vice versa! its  hard enough to get winners at Chelts without ruling out 70% of the runners on the grounds of nationality!

Correct but good few Irish are slighty blinkered? Ive personally backed Hurricane Fly and Big Zeb well before xmas on ability not where they are trained!!! Nap is Poquelin though on at 6s.

ridiculous thread Glossy! You must have spoken to all of one Irishman at each festivel you attended - a generalisation bordering on ignorance!
Stevo is another - he's "personallY" backed the Fly and Zeb - you usually back for someone else?

mr.ed -what a ridiculous statement - why would you celebrate a horse winning that you didn't back - of course one would be pleased for sentimental winners like Denman et al but you would applaud the winner not run for champagne after backing the loser.BTW my favourite horse BB, IC a close 2nd and I have backed them religously and will again when I travel over next week - I couldn't care less if they were trained in outer Mongolia to be honestHappy

No it's not generalised at all. It refers to the specific times that I've spoken to Irish folks at the Festival. If I'd have said "All Irish punters back Irish horses", it would have been a generalisation.

Well done for ruining a perefectly decent discussion.

Point of order:

Criticising spelling and syntax allows the critics pen!s/ cl!toris to throb with (misplaced) pride.

Whatever the truth,10 years of the festival and never ever had a problem with the Irish boys.In my opinion they make the week special.Everyone entitled to a little Jingoism. Not met many mug punters amongst them either.Finding your own one is nice, add a little national pride, lovely.

now stop bickering,i'm on holiday..

The question is almost a valid one.

While I doubt there are any Irish punters who go to Cheltenham who wouldn't back an English horse, it is definitely true that most would back the Irish horse if they couldn't split two that they thought were the most likely winners.

Every year I tell myself to stop backing so many Irish horses... had a look at my antepost bets yesterday and I reckon it's split 70:30 in favour of Irish horses completely unconsciously.
