Has Hurricane Fly and Peddlers Cross to beat. Menorah cannot win.

BIG YES - the only worries are HF and KK - for some reason I also think Overturn can sneak a place at big odds.

When: 07 Mar 11 10:29
Do I have to?

I hope Hurricane Fly will beat them all, wouldn't be surprised if Menorah beat him. less surprised if Peddler's Cross beat him, Oscar Whisky could easily do a Punjabi and Dunquib could cruise past the lost of them.

I am pretty certain Walk On won't win but Binocular? damned if I know

Most competitive Champion Hurdle in it's history IMO and not prepared to eliminate any of them.

Has a chance on good ground ,on soft ground he doesn't quite stay a fast run 2m.
He won't beat Peddler's cross anyway, so the answer is NO.

I am of the opinion that his best days are behind him...so No
The young guns look very tough this year.. none more so than Peddlers who I will be supporting. Of the 'old guard' KK might be interesting at a big price.

my god, Bino is 7yo, not 9 like Dunguib. The ground in the Xmas hurdle was also pretty soft.

I am a Binocular fan, so accuse me of being biased, but the logic I am using is that each run he has had this season is a vast improvement on the corresponding run from last season when he actually won the race. This horse is on an upward curve, imo.

so....have any of you yesers backed the beast to win? No one backing to lay? I honestly think this horse is the best jumper in the world and prove to much for the like of Menrora, Fly and Cross (the latter I really do not fancy)

I may even venture into a big bet for KK to place, I know he was not well at the xmas hurdle. I don't think he will win it, but a good shout of a place here...

He could well do it; but the price is not in the least bit attractive in such a high class field.

You may not believe this but if I have to I will prove it. The day he won his very first race, I was so taken by him I made a post on another forum stating this horse will win a Champion Hurdle.

You can imagine how thrilled I was when he won last year but hand on my heart I just don't think he's good enough to win again.

I pretty much new exactly what the plan was last year and AP rode him to perfection but now everyone knows exactly where and when AP will make his move.

Last year at the top of the hill when AP went for home it was a simple case of running past Celestial Halo and Zaynar and only Khyber Kim was able to follow him through. This year he's going to have a much bigger and better band of calvary chasing him into the straight plus he might not even get to Peddler's Cross if he goes early.

The race is just so different and so much better this year. It's one thing having a top class handicapper like Kyber Kim chasing after you but having Hurricane Fly, Menorah, Oscar Whisky, Dunquib and Mille Chief coming at you is a totally different thing.

As much as I love the horse and wouldn't grudge him the win for one minte I just can't see him being quite good enough to fend them all off this time.

So NO for me.

Ron,

Don't you think though (having just re-watched Punjabi's win) that Bonocular was given a ride where McCoy thought he had so much turn of foot that he didn't make the most of him? (not for the first time for McCoy (& Carberry)) - to me if he does a long burn he will have them strung out again.

Fascinating contest.

My banker of the meeting.

Spectecular last year, primed for this race and has proven he has what it takes. Lot of question marks over several of the leading fancies.

It wasn't a case of that Ming, AP was actually sick as a parrot after the race for not going against instructions . What happened for some reason was the press and everyone else latched on to "He won't get up the hill" So much so even Nicky Henderson started to believe it.

So the decision was made to hold him up until the last. If AP had said stuff it and gone when Binocular was travelling at his best he would have no doubt won.

If you look back on his best wins they have all come when AP has asked him to quicken the tempo after the third last like he did against Celestial Halo prior to his defeat at Cheltenham. He did it again against Overturn.

He's never had turn of foot you would associate with a Nijinsky type horse he just has a very high top gear which he cruisies into. After that there's really nothing else in the tank and he is highly unlikely to quicken again.

That is his one weakness and if he hasn't won the Champion Hurdle from before the last and something like Hurricane Fly or Menorah are there with him he will get beat.

When he was beaten by Punjabi he was really beaten by fitness - the snow had held him up and the trainer is on record saying the horse blew up (not taking anything away from the 2 who finished in front f him).

Your getting your facts mixed up RC.

Binocular was jumping out of his skin and did a fantastic piece of work 6 days before the Champion Hurdle and went off at 6/4 fav. He most certainly did not blow up, in fact he was gaining on both horses 100 yds from the line and was far from out of breath.

He was held up in his work and did blow up in the Fighting Fifth and most likely would have won the Supreme had Nicky Henderson not been told a week before the race he wasn't running and going to Aintree.

If Nicky did say that it was probably a Monday as that's his brandy and port nightLaugh

Definately not Rondetto.

He said in November 09, reflecting on Binocular's defeat, 'I can only feel that we might have just got caught out by the weather, we were snowed in for what felt like an eternity. My gut feeling is that Cheltenham might have come just 10 days too soon'.

He also said 'the thing which caught him out was the weather as we were unable to work him outside for about a fortnight. He therefore went to the CHampion and wasn't quite at his very best ... the weather threw a spanner in the works'.

I actually think that race proved the horse was a stayer, but there is no question the horse blew up at the bottom of the hill before staying on again. Last yr AP took a pull after 2 out - the yr before AP squeezed him at the bottom of the hill. From recollection, when I watched the tapes the weekend after the race, having returned home, Henderson described the horse as just taking a 'blow' at the bottom of the hill.

As for brandy and port, unlike NJ Henderson, I make sure I take my medicine each night!

"Binocular has had a bit of a blow afterwards. He hasn't run since December, but he looks well and he's run a very good race. He's young, and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't have his day ahead of him."

As it is the last leg of my £50ew treble, I hope so. Long run (king George), Synchronised (welsh National)7-1 & 8-1 going on Binocular at 9-2.

Should I lay some win and place off here or back some others? I don't usually do lay's so some advice would be appreciated.

barstool, you need to hedge on your bet as this years champion hurdle is a way better race than last years that binocular won, beating very average horses in the process. This years race is stacked with possible champion hurdle winners in their own right, peddlers cross, menorah, hurricane fly, oscar whiskey and possibly mille chief are live threats to binocular"s crown. I had the good fortune of backing binocular in last years champion hurdle, thanks to advice from a leading irish bookmaker, but i wont be backing him this year as its a far tougher race with so many improvers in it. You have the hard work done barstool with long run and synchronised winning, lay him each way on here even if its for only a small profit and sit back and enjoy it as it has the potential line up for a brilliant race. Whatever you do best of luck with it
