Does anyone else compile speed ratings for juvenile hurdlers? I do so every year, and the Triumph has always been my most successful race at the Festival.
The Triumph winner usually returns a speed rating between 142 and 150 on my scale. It is very rare for a winner to have clocked that sort of figure before the Triumph, but I always look for horses who have clocked 133+ in a prep and have the scope to get to the required level.
This year I am having difficulty assessing Grandouet. His Ascot run looks quick, but speed ratings from Ascot are unreliable in my book and I don't think the performance was that great. The subsequent runs of those close behind him (Two Kisses, Looks Like Slim & L'Eminence Gris) lends weight to that opinion. I prefer to rate Grandouet on his run behind Sam winner in November.
Looking at the top 5 in the market, the 2 fillies have a lot to prove on my figures, but PN's pair look very credible contenders and I've backed them both after their debuts (Sam Winner @ 8/1 & Zarkandar @ 12/1).
