QUEL ESPRIT shone brightest of Willie Mullins's quartet to school round Leopardstown after racing on Sunday, according to jockey Paul Townend and was promptly cut by bookmakers for the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Mikael D'Haguenet, ridden by reigning champion Ruby Walsh, followed Quel Esprit under Townend, who is leading this season's title race by seven winners from Davy Russell, over a circuit of the chase course at Leopardstown when several Cheltenham contenders were put through their paces on the first of the track's pre-festival gallop days. Following that pair were the Katie Walsh-ridden Pomme Tiepy, wearing blinkers for the first time, and Some Target, ridden by Patrick Mullins. Mullins said: "Paul was particularly happy with Quel Esprit. The National Hunt Chase is a big option for him now, that's most likely where he'll run." Quel Esprit was cut to 10-1 and 12-1 (from 16) by Totesport and Bet365, while Ladbrokes went 10-1 (from 12). Ladbrokes spokeswoman Hayley O'Connor said: "Quel Esprit did a nice piece of work and with Mullins confirming he's aiming him for the National Hunt Chase we've cut him to 10-1." Some Target is also headed towards that race, with the RSA Chase the target for Mikael D'Haguenet. Pomme Tiepy could run in the Stewart Family Spinal Research Handicap Chase or the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase. Galloping and schooling sessions continue at Leopardstown on Monday from 9am to noon and again on Tuesday during the same period. |

4 miler?
Beyond crazy imo. Help make the market though. |
|
By:
just in case it's not been covered elsewhere, reported in yday's RP that Mullins told preview audience at Westmanstown Sports Centre that both Mikael and Quel Esprit will go for RSA.
Make of it what you will. |

By:
2 different peoples notes from same preview night about the RSA
Patrick Mullins actually said he fancies Quel Espirit more, would have got to ride him in the 4 miler had he not worked so well on Sunday and seemed angry that he now had to miss out on another possible Cheltenham winner. Patrick Mullins said Mikael D’Haguenet and Quel Esprit will run in this. He seemed much more confident about Quel Esprit who he said worked very well at Leopardstown. |
|
By:
However he had previously said Quel Esprit went NH Chase and in addition Ted Walsh, who presumably has an inside line with Ruby, in todays RPost at a preview evening tipped for the whole Festival, Quel Esprit the NH Chase.

|
By:
thx CV - seems like that's the plan then ... would n't be overly surprised if there was another change before the festival.
|
|
By:
There was a lot looking to lay off on him the RSA after the RSA following the NH Chase announcement. Really dont approve of this pleased he can sleep well.
|
|
By:
Personally I would feel a real dimwit and total fkwit if I didnt know the plan at this stage a week before the Festival if I had a single brain cell.

By:
and was a supposedly leading trainer.
|
|
By:
No probs Rease, Ruby at the preview on thursday also said Quel might run in the RSA and not NH Chase.
Also from another preview night at Westmondstown I the summary is this WILLY MULLINS CALL : Quevega - very pleased done very good piece yesterday Kempes - thinks he will improve Quel Esprit - Rsa chase Blazing Tempo - small setback but defo bringing her over (gonna back her whatever she runs in) Backstairs Mountain in coral Bumper - 3 or 4 runners Ceol rua for Aintree Allure of Illusion like ground |

By:
Would like to clarify hope he can sleep well after saying his horse goes NH Chase one day then shortly after the RSA which surely means he should say I dont have a clue where he should go. Punters will have done their cash on either race whichever he ends up in. A 'may' would be better if not sure.
Otherwise he comes across as hapless ans clueless which obviously would not be becoming of a leading respectable trainer in the entertainment industry with the responsibilities that entails racing fighting for its life witg sports that are seen as more transparent. |
