His Arkle assessment is embarrassing. He clearly has no respect for anything he doesn't fancy and his comments are even flawed in their truth. Medermit doesn't truly stay 2m5f at Cheltenham???!!! Ran all the way to the line! Hell's Bay - Cheltenham specialist (won one race there). Finian's Rainbow finds nothing off the bridle?! Has only really has once race in his life where he's come off the bridle in the Neptune last year and didn't look to stay (Henderson since come out and said he is an out and out 2 miler); also at Warwick he was about to come off the bridle and there is no guarantee he wouldn't have found plenty. He is making assumptions based on very little and seems like a complete mug who just has a bit of nerve and arrogance to express his opinions on tv. Muppet.

Agreed, He is a full time hack, he should substantiate his points better, you would actually often see better writing on this forum from people who follow horseracing as a hobby.

Think a lot of these hacks fall into the hole of being generally decent broadcasters / writers (leaving aside what we think they're remit and target audience is or should be) in terms of conveying atmosphere and scene setting. But then they feel they have to be tipsters too and because they slither around the racing fraternity like eels, feel they hae some sort of grand insight into how to make money from the game.

That's why someone like Alastair Down has done so well. He's excellent at the former and doesn't try to be the latter. When he does offer anything like betting advice it usually comes with a self-depracatory wealth-warning.

Fair point Roger, one or the other, I often wonder is it the fact that they are working to a wordcount which is too tight which causes them not to substantiate their selections. The paper is packed with ads eats into space.

I think Gashboy13 was referring to Rodway's tipping of Medermit on the RPTV slot, rather than what the guy writes in the RP itself.

In fairness, Rodway's view that Medermit is the stand out bet in the Arkle is defensible, or at least a coherent case could be made for that opinion about the race. As Gashboy13 rightly points out though, the points used by Rodway to substantiate his case seemed poorly chosen or poorly expressed.

I guess you have to allow for the fact that Rodway has only a short slot (probably less than a minute) to get across his arguments on the RPTV video. And if he tried to make his reasoning more subtle or sophisticated, his editor would probably soon be shouting in his ear to 'keep it simple'. At the end of the day, what are they trying to do with these RPTV slots? I doubt the aim is to be so analytical and incisive that it risks becoming a turn off for the majority of the target audience. To be chatty and provocative is more likely to be the brief.

What are they replicating with these RPTV slots? Pub chat, surely. It is young geezers sat around a bar putting up their racing picks. They even have a 'barmaid' to front many of the videos, looking for all the world like a young version of Betty from Corrie. Why she isn't allowed to offer any tips, I am not sure; when they use a male presenter, he always finds a way of slipping in his fancies, alongside those of the tipsters on the panel.

Even niche TV is still essentially a popular medium; it is not something designed to appeal to a minority who want detailed, carefully considered analysis and difficult challenges to their way of thinking.

I'm a young geezer aka. I'd say the editor is ill advised if that is his thinking, the very act of going on the RP site and accessing the tipping video would already suggest that you follow racing and are willing to devote a bit of time to it. If he's short of time, he should do what us young geezers have to do in our exams, write out bullet points allied with pithy link sentences and get the main reasoning for your oppinion accross. What he is doing at the moment just looks like lazy journalism, despite the fact that it looks quite a solid tipLaugh

unclepuncle, What is wrong with that, outline your best 3,4,5 resons for tipping the horse and cut out all the bullshit. If they can't get that accross in their minute than they shouldn't be there. If your distaste is down to the fact that I said that accessing the RP site suggests an interest in racing, I would say you should walk into any bookmakers on the high street and see the number of punters who do little or no research and just bet on their whims/jockeys/trainer names (not being smart here but many of them can't read anyway from what I notice) btw I'm not implying that those that access the RP website are particularly shrewd or winning punters or anything, I am merely stating that they are interested in the sport of horseracing and deserve a higher standard of race analysis than that which was given on that podcast.

Totally agree that Rodway is an awful tipster. Anything I've ever read from him has always seemed lazy and he always seems to read whatever he wants into a piece of form. Saying that, I agree with his Arkle selection.

neill d - I think you make good points. My feeling is the issue with Rodway is more that he expresses himself poorly a lot of the time on the RPTV, rather than being a weak thinker about the game.

There certainly isn't any excuse for lazy journalism, as you point out. But there is a wider context to what some perceive as the limitations with Rodway and some of the other tipsters on RPTV, part of which relates to what the RP is seeking to achieve in terms of its information and entertainment values and also in relation to its commercial ends.

Rodway could come at the task, as you suggest, like a student in an exam, with a crisp, academic approach and presentation. How many new accounts at Hills is that going to sell through the RP site though? And if the RP thought serious, well conceived and well explained tipping was so central to its remit, why persevere with 'the Couch' as a key part of their RPTV schedule? Incisive and well presented analysis by the majority of its tipsters is still, no doubt, one of the things the RP seeks to achieve, but increasingly there are other media values it has to consider, not least how to broaden its appeal beyond the more serious minded 'student' type of reader/viewer that you describe.

Widening the discussion out, there is also of course the issue of how long the bookies would continue to fund the RP through advertisement revenue if the RP was consistently generating particularly good returns with its tips. The tipsters the RP employ have to be less successful at the game than those who consistently make a good living as professional gamblers, or they would soon be bankrupting their employer.

Look at the recent adverts from B 365 on the telly, if you can stomach them, and think about the conception of the target punter behind those adverts. The RP is increasingly in the business of competing to deliver that type of punter as new clients to the bookies. The RPs advertising revenue will almost certainly dry up if the RP fails in its current efforts to broaden its appeal to an audience of younger people who potentially are new clients for the bookies. It is not the better educated, more academic minded younger person the bookmaking industry and its lackeys are targeting. Sad to say, perhaps.

neild - 'my head in hands man' was not aimed at your post especially, more the thread itself.

Anyone who pays the slightest bit of attention to what is tipped on Racing Post TV or any other tipster show (RUK, ATR etc) deserves the crap that is served up.

These people (whatever they claim to be 'pro punter' 'form expert' etc ,etc) are no more informed than you or I and unless you really are too lazy to form an opinion of your own there views should be of no interest to anyone but themselves. Sure they will tip the odd big priced winner, and maybe Merdermit will will the Arkle and then then guy who tipped can claim to be a'shrewdie' and get his own tipping line or column in the paperCry

Much to agree with there, Uncle. Certainly not a benign sort of crap the tipsters and their mouth pieces are serving up. Improving the form in which the tips are presented, wouldn't the punter's friend the tipster any more make.

Just feel I should respond to the comments from Uncle there. As many will hopefully see from other threads that I am a well educated follower of the game and like to think I form some interesting opinions of some value. I watch the forums on RPTV not because I am looking for a tip as I have long formed my opinions on the races in question through my hours of research. However, I watch them, much for the same reasons I come onto the forum as I am interested in other opinions and try to establish points of view which I may have missed and debate others which I have already formed. However, the issue I have is that for someone in his position working in the racing media as a tipster I expect a level of knowledge and thought behind whatever tips are put up. I have no issue with the tip itself, it is perfectly reasonable. However, it appears he has decided he wants to back Medermit and then looked at the form and found the bits of it which he believes to conviniently fit in order to support his argument. He may be able to get away with this procedure most of the time, but this time he has just made himself look like an idiot. The evidence he has used is ill-informed. Alan king ran Medermit over two and a half miles in the first place because he felt he lacked a gear to be able to quicken up over 2. This having worked well with his 2 runs, he has said that it is only fair to let the horse have a crack at the Arkle as this is more prestigious. Now to say Medermit doesn't stay the 2 and a half is utterly ludicrous. It is also disrespectful the connections of Finian's Rainbow to suggest he doesn't find anything off the bridle because there is absolutely no evidence to suggest this is the case. Any muppet can fit facts to suit them, it's just embarrassing. If the RP believe serving this sort of rubbish up is useful then they are mistaken and could save themselves some money in addition.

Fair enough lads I see now where you are coming from, like gashboy, it wasn't so much the tip as his reasoning that I wasn't happy about, but indeed,as aka mentioned, maybe it is what the RP is looking for.
