...just read about the double fatality in the Hennessey Gold Cup to go with the tragic scenes at Newbury today, and Warwick, and ive got to be honest my enthusiasm for the remainder of this season is fast on the decline.
The weather disruptions in December/January were bad enough but to lose another 5 horses today...I keep feeling like I just want them all locked away for the summer now before anymore suffer any accident.
Win or lose this game is all about the horses who run their guts out for us as punters week in week out, and today has just been so desperate it's really taken the shine off the gleaming surface which is the Festival and the climax of another campaign. I love the sport of horse racing so much, but my enjoyment is not worth today's price.
I feel very, very flat about the whole thing right now.

I can understand your sentiment but it's worth noting that far more fatal accidents occur on the gallops/stables/fields than on the racecourse, of course it's very sad whenever there are racing injuries and I can't offer any explanation for what happened at Newbury and I'd rather not comment until investigations are complete

OK 5 horses is a tragedy, but I can't understand all the outcry today. Horses die week in week out, why weren't there threads about Dansimar last week at Sandown? That's right, because it's racing.
Very hard to draw the line over what's tragic, but surely Exotic Dancer's death is more tragic than the five today? What about Inglis Drever? Is it more acceptable that he died at home than in a parade ring? No. He's a champ. Gutted to see racing in the headlines for the wrong reasons, but c'mon guys, we are lucky Kauto Star is still around after THAT fall. And shouldn't we be saluting Kempes, a brilliant staying chaser? |

I share some of your thoughts too despite a very god punting season it has never really seemed to get going. Lets hope for a blinding Chelts and then a close fought GN to end on a high. The top divsions have beena bit weird with Denman and Kauto on the decline (imo) and IC not running. Whilst in the Hurdling divison PC keeps having his runs put back and the compeition eratic. Add to that Ruby getting injured and ...god i need to stop as still love this sport. The uncertainty of it is a big pull and you have to take the rough wth the smooth.

The season has been stop/start because of the terrible weather, add to that the games best horseman beinmg injured, the big pullers (Kauto and Denman) being on the decline, the reigning Gold Cup winner only seen once, a host of leading Cheltenham fancies only being seen twice and Mullins refusal to give Hurricane Fly a look at the Cheltenham hill ! Here's hoping for a fatality free festival season |
