Cheltenham Festival

I'm staying in the Premier Inn in Bristol city centre on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights of the Festival. Am I right in assuming that plenty of people travel up from there to Cheltenham? And does anyone know if Bristol is a decent night out, or am I better off staying in Cheltenham and getting the last train back?
