OUR GIRL SALLEY A SMART MARE

OUR GIRL SALLEY (37) won a Listed mares hurdle at Leopardstown in good style last week. The early pace was moderate but as it steadily wound up it became ever more apparent that she was going better than her rivals. She came there cruising soon after entering the straight and totally swamped her rivals for finishing speed to win comfortably.

My analysis of the sectional times suggest this was simply a Listed class performance but it does look likely she can run a bit faster judged by the ease of her win. She's almost certainly not fast enough to beat the buys in the Neptune Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham but she has a shot in the big mares race on this evidence.

Unlike most mares, Our Girl Salley has the build for chasing if her connections choose to go that route. She could obviously be effective over two miles as well because this was essentially a two mile race preceded by a half mile canter.

ZAIDPOUR WANTS FASTER GROUND

Anyone who doubts the idea that a race activates a horse's herd instinct should look at the video of the Grade 1 Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown. The front running HIDDEN CYCLONE (38) jumped slightly right at a few of the jumps and the rest of the field all imitated him by taking the same skew path over the jumps, as if he was showing them the safest way to get across.

Hidden Cyclone is a tall, good bodied, chasing sort that's built for at least two and a half miles. So his rider probably would have done better to make this two mile race more of a stamina test. Though it's understandable he was cautious and set a modest early gallop because the ground was so heavy.

From five out Hidden Cyclone was asked to steadily wind the pace up and his jockey clearly fancied his chances just after jumping the second last because he stole a look back at his rivals. Unfortunately they were a little closer than he would have wished, and it turns out they had a bit more pace than Hidden Cyclone. He was still fighting for the lead though until he smashed through the last and lost momentum. He rallied back again on the run in despite being slightly tight for room down the inside, losing by under a length.

My feeling is that Hidden Cyclone will prove to be the best horse in this race. However I think he now needs to go up to two and a half miles if he's to win in Grade 1 company.

Hidden Cyclone didn't run anything like as green as he did in previous starts and I liked the way he rallied after that last flight mistake. It was a sign of real class. It could be that the ground will prove a little too fast for him at the Cheltenham Festival as he's rather a heavy topped sort, but if there's a bit of cut I'll fancy his chances in the Neptune.

The winner FIRST LIEUTENANT (38) is built for chasing and has already won a point to point. But he's still not filled his frame, so I can understand why trainer Mouse Morris talked of him as a horse for next year. He tracked Hidden Cyclone, led before the last then held the late surge of runner up Zaidpour.

I can't find a way to interpret the sectional times to say this was a proper Grade 1 run. My thinking at this stage is First Lieutenant needs a bit more time to grow and may also need rests between his runs judged by his physique and record.

Runner up ZAIDPOUR (38) had not impressed me anything like as much as most with his wide margin win at Fairyhouse. But I was rather taken with this effort. He's much more a hurdling/flat race type than the first two. More importantly he has a much flatter stride pattern - which suggests he would not have been getting through the heavy ground as well as them. Nonetheless he managed to stage a terrific late surge to nearly get to the winner. My bet is that on faster ground he would have outpaced both First Lieutenant and Hidden Cyclone.

It's possible trainer Willie Mullins is right to say this run may have come a bit soon. I thought that before the race myself judged on the horse's record. But now I think it's the ground rather than the spacing of his runs that's going to prove most important for Zaidpour. Seeing that it's normally fast for the big Spring Festival meetings I think there's cause for optimism about Zaidpour winning a Grade 1 novice hurdle at one of them.

HURRICANE FLY HAS SOME FINISHING KICK

The turn of foot that HURRICANE FLY (41) showed to win the big Grade 1 hurdle at Leopardstown was quite remarkable.

Four of the five hurdle races on the card featured a slow early pace. But Hurricane Fly was still able to come home a full second faster from three out than any of them from two out. He produced a sustained burst of speed to simply cruise away from some smart rivals.

Hurricane Fly can clearly beat pretty much anything over hurdles when he's in this sort of form. The concern I have stems from something trainer Willie Mullins mentioned after his big win here.

He said "I thought he was a bit dead before the race today, but he had to take his chance."

I've mentioned before that Hurricane Fly's record suggests he's bests fresh. The fact that his trainer felt he may have been going off the boil prior to what was only his second start of the season has to be a worry when you look at Hurricane Fly's record.

As I’ve mentioned before, all Hurricane Fly's wins have all come on one of his first two starts off a four month break. His form figures since his two year old days when fresh in this way read 11111113111. When he's had two or more runs in the previous four months his lifetime form figures read 2384772.

If he were mine I'd be going straight to the Champion Hurdle with Hurricane Fly. I'd even consider skipping the big race altogether and holding him back for the Punchestown Festival. If he runs again before Cheltenham I'd be inclined to oppose him

good old nick mordin, always a interesting view even if he is wrong more often than not.

Has to be the biggest "Lemon" as far as price goes.

Will prolly not get the ground he wants

Has to prove his not a flat track bully

Like many from the Emerald Isle they can beat each other there but at Chelt...na

HaRD HORSE TO KEEP RIGHT

Terrible terrible value now...it is a genuine 10/1 shot.

Here come the "Lay me 10k at 10/1 replies" save it.

Kyhber Kim at 16/1 or Hurricaon Fly at 4/1 .... ahem
Report CVByrne January 13, 2011 9:26 PM GMT
Hurricane Fly will get his ground, he travels like a dream through his races, slick hurdling and lightening quick so will be seen at his best on good ground which is likely at Cheltenham.

Has won over 2m4f on soft ground so he has stamina so that allays some concern about the hill.

I'm pretty sure Hardy Eustace, Brave Inca, Harchibald, Macs Joy & Sublimity beat eachother over here and then filled the first three home over there many times.

Hard to keep right is only a worry if Ladbrokes weren't offering Non Runner No Bet Concession. If he makes it there he's fit and well.

Brooksirlad - you are a muppet! I didn't jsut tell him, I told the whole racing world the day Hurricane Fly beat Cousin Vinny at Punchestown that this horse is the best 2 miler in training. I know exactly what I am talkign about, it's like I am in a different league to you muppets at tipping horses. I believe I am up there with the greatest, if not the greatest tipster of all time. I don't just give it the large, I actually back it up unlike you.

I am a good asset to this forum, I bring excitment to the forum. I am the future of this forum.

Like the Fly but only one winner of this race, Menorah.
Report Mayweather January 14, 2011 10:35 AM GMT
Deplaster - are you ready for a beating in the King George tomorrow lol.

Menorah is a good horse and will surely be in the shake up but I tell you this horses problem, his jumping is not good enough. He will come unstuck in March when the Hurricane looms upside him approaching the last.
