Was looking at the Royal Well Tavern last year but plans fell through, so would like to try that for 2011.
Can anyone review the place?

To get the ball rolling-
Where can I get a really fantastic fillet steak? I love a bit of posh-pub/gastropub type places. Willing to spend sort of £30-£40 a head. No idea if a fantastic fillet steak is possible on that budget but should feckin hope so.

The Langton on London Road is a good gastro pub. Last steak I had there was really good.
One of the top restaurants I remember is........
"CHAMPIGNON SAUVAGE" (with 2 Michelin stars !)

Green Dragon - gastro pub on the way back towards Cirencester.
get there early and tip the waiter they will do you steak and chips and a botte of wine before the residents all come down for dinner. Place is fully booked for Festival and PP.
Open fire , goos steak (3 nights in a row last time!). Lush.

there is one very good pub which i could highly recommend but wont do as i may not be able to get in myself.
joist The Italian type resteraunt across from the Montpelier wine sounds like your type of place.
We have been going the last few years its good food and a good atmosphere and the fillet steak I had in there was tremedous.
Funny i say this every year, somebody tells me the name of the place and I never remember the next year.

Just returned from the Open meeting. Was my 1st visit to cheltenham and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I stayed in tewkesbury around 7 miles out of town for the 3 nights. £20 to cheltenham in taxi or £3 by bus. It is a bit far out but it has plenty pubs a bit like the Woolpac if thats your thing. Stayed at the Jessop house hotel. Which was ok and a Weatherspoon just 2 min walk away for a hearty breakfast. When I go back I will defo stay in cheltenham thou.

Thank you very much guys for the excellent replies. didn't want the thread to be just about what I was after though, last year there was a cracking long thread of everyone's recommendations, would be good to have a similar thing on the go.
Lovely food at the Bathurst Arms, North Cerney, on the old road to Cirencester.Booking will probably be essential.
Those on a more restricted budget... the Indian at Fiveways, Charlton Kings is top notch, and you can take your own wine.

Joist, you asked earlier where you could get a good fillet steak, and I couldn't disagree with any of the postings. I live locally and am very fussy about where I would eat steak, and have found a pub/ restaurant called the Queens Head in Longford: they have there own website and it is worth a look.
Actually I didn't find it by accident as I have used the place for a number of years, and moved 70 yards from the place around two years ago. I have just come back from a quick couple of pints and they are full tonight (around 80 covers).
It is not on any normal route you might take to to or from the racecourse (unless you are unfortunately staying in Gloucester) but is actually on a bus route from Cheltenham town centre - stops 20 yards away. They are very often booked on weekdays and race week is the same. They have a number of Irish that stay locally and use the pub and there is good banter that week.
But if you are serious about a steak, it is well worth a visit.

Be interested to hear about the Spice Lodge place Mr E, have walked past many times and looks a fine establishment from outside, but we always end up going to Siam Smile (always excellent btw) up the road. Might give it a bash in Jan if you recommend it strongly.

Personally not a fan, probably because my memories of the place go back to the 1980s! It is highly thought of though.

As we are booked as usual for 2 out of our 3 night stay I can assure you Montys is absolutely top notch grub and I look forward to having 2 more fine meals as well as excellent service and a nice drink in the bar below.

charwell-I know this a food thread but are there any titty bars in Chelt?
Not as such as far as I know, but there is a bar that has a license for lap dancing for the Chelt festival near the George Hotel. Can't remember the name as it's just a place we walk to. My mate spends a fortune in there! but the girls are generally a good laugh and enjoy a drink in the bar etc. Just a bit of fun really.

Went daffodil in january, very good indeed. Salted caramel ice cream with the chocolate fondant, I could eat a bucket of that!
There's a new restaurant opened not much more than a smooth 8 iron from my frontdoor called ' the MONTPELLIER '.
It's by the roundabout opposite the Rotunda pub. I havnt been there but reports are very good.
Also Jamie Oliver has recently opened an Italian in the town centre.

Just booked into Lumiere for the Monday night, and Champignon Sauvage for the Tuesday night. Good choices?
The KFC on the Golden Valley roundabout is amongst the best you'll find; as is the McDonalds on the Lower High Street. Lest I forget the world renowned fry up at Spencers Cafe on Winchcombe Street.
Cheltenham is truly blessed with some fine establishments of cuisine.

Cracking Indian in Stow.
We stay in the Wyck Hill House Hotel and I had a fillet of beef in there last year to rival any I've had before.
There's a lovely restaurant in Winchcombe called 5 North Street though I remember that seemed a bit pricey....

Good to hear, CCM. Where are they both in relation to the course or town?
If anyone wants a curry and doesn't fancy remortgaging their houses for a meal at the overrated Curry Corner, take a trip down Bath Road and visit the Indian Brasserie. Excellent food and very friendly place - am there myself about once a month.
Even cheaper, The Kashmir nr town centre is great too - you can bring your own booze too.

Both in town mate. CS just off Montpelier and Lumiere is just round the corner from the Royal Well Tavern, couple of mins from the Hotel du Vin if you know where either of those are?
Yeah I think so, cheers. Pretty excited to eat in my first ever Michelin starred establishment.
The food is tremendous. Little bit quiet, but that's not what you are there for IMO!
Erm....walked past the Royal Well Tavern on Monday. Closed for refurbishment. Probably targeting a race week re-opening....as what, feck knows.
Well, having returned home for the final 2 days I'll report back on Lumiere and Champignon Sauvage for anyone interest.
Lumiere: Suprised at how understated outside it was, and how small (and empty- we were the only table there at 7.30! Filled up though) the place was. Really nice feel inside. Faultless waitresses, if anything a little bit too smiley.
Canapes were squid crackers, cajun popcorn, and a tzatziki. Squid crackers were weird but not unpleasant, and the cajun popcorn was very standard. Never been to a place that gives you canapes before though so despite them being nothing special it was a nice touch.
Amuse bouche was a wild garlic soup with smoked eel. This was delicious, and I was very suprised at how nice eel was. They really creep me out and strike me as pretty disgusting creatures, but they taste remarkably like bacon.
Starter, scallops and pork belly. Very nice, not mindblowing, but very nice.
Main, halibut. Again, nice but lacked any 'wow' factor, but then choosing a fairly bland fish this was always fairly likely.
Desert, was excellent. I had the rhubarb trifle with some kind of sorbet, and honeycomb. This really was fantastically good, the honeycomb was delightful, little meringues on the trifle were superb. Really pleased with how good this was, because Lumiere risked being ever so slightly disappointing. I had this paired with a desert wine, which the waitress forgot to add to the bill. In the interest of good punting karma, I decided to tell her. I'm still waiting to receive said good punting karma, having done my brains this last 2 days.
There was a pre-desert as well but I can't remember what it was.
The bill was £120 or so for two, with a bottle of wine. Not entirely unreasonable imo.
Next up, the Champignon Sauvage. Handily, Sprinter Sacre winnings with the profit put on Quevega provided a big help to the cost of the bill here. We were booked in for 7.30, opening time, and it was not open when we turned up. So we went for a drink in the Suffolk Arms, where some considerably rotund woman seemingly attempted to chat up my mum. Odd experience, promptly saw off my remaining pint and did one. Champignon Sauvage was open when we returned.
First impressions, it's a bit chilly in the dining room. Maybe because we were sat by the window. Otherwise, I liked it, but the lack of music was a bit strange. Soon though, with a few more tables filling up the buzz of chatter provided a nice soundtrack.
Canapes: can't remember. Some kind of mini muffin which I remember being nice, and I can't remember what else there was. They were quite a bit classier than the canapes of Lumiere though. Similarly very good, but not out of this world.
Starter: I had the butter-poached Lobster for a 6 quid supplement (cheek). Was worth every penny, really stunning. Delicious.
Main: Wood pigeon with black pudding puree (this was vile), parsnip puree, some assorted other things. This was nice, but the pigeon slightly disappointing, rather bland.
Desert: possibly the cheesecake. We were 2 bottles of wine down at this point, and I must confess that I can't entirely remember my pudding. The coffee and petit fours were delicious though. One thing that Lumiere outdid Champignon on, Lumiere gave both of us a pre-dessert, despite only 1 desert being ordered. Champignon just brought out 1 pre-desert for the 1 desert ordered.
