dunguib would have defo won with a better jock aboard , lydia hislop says after it dunguib had every chance, its a bit difficult when your 6 lths of the pace going 4 - 5 runners wide , cant imagine how many lengths he gave gmooh and menorah by going so wide and only lost by 1 - 2 lengths, cost me a wedge but i think im finally getting over it

Dont matter who rode him,he was riding to orders.Had not jumped well on the build up,so they decided to go wide to avoid trouble.

Even racing wide though and with comparatively inexperienced jockey on board, had Dunguib been the horse he was cracked up to be, he ought to have been capable of seeing off GMOH and Menorah, I would have thought. As top novice hurdlers go, the ratings for GMOH and Menorah were not particularly impressive. I think Menorah, under the right race conditions, might be capable of showing a fair bit more, but at this stage there are no grounds for thinking either Menorah or GMOH are anything special.
Dunguib we know has to improve his hurdling, but he also has to put to bed doubts that he has the attributes for coping well with a fast run two miles on good ground. |

shocking ride but to be fair i think he would still have struggled to finish in teh top 2.

aka - I tend to agree with the overall thrust of your posting above - just curious re the quote above - I'd have thought the big field and pace of the sup novs would have been pretty much ideal for Menorah? |

Menorah will prove to be the best horse in that race over hurdles by some way, imho...

Menorah needs exactly what he got in the Supreme,the race was ideal for him,and every time he gets that he is more likely to run up to his best.How good that turns out to be in relation to whats needed for a CH is open to question,but i do feel he will prove to be the best of last years novices over 2m,unless Peddlers Cross is trained over that distance,which is probably unlikely. |

Hi, Just So. It was a bit ambiguous how I expressed my original comment. What I meant was that with a bit more maturity and experience, and learning to settle better than he did at times last season, Menorah might be capable of bridging the gap between good novice company and top open company, if getting the right race conditions again this season. I agree that the conditions of the SN last season were more or less the right conditions for the horse i.e. decent ground, big field, good pace. It would be interesting to see how he would cope with the slightly faster early pace they often go in the CH by comparison with the SN. |

Last years novice was not run at a fast pace by any stretch of the imagination. If you run the two races together (CH and SN), and compare the positions of the two winners, Menorah was 30 lengths behind Binocular with two to jump: Binocular even ran from the last to the finishing line faster than Menorah. Do the same exercise with Sanctuaire's race (I know it was the next day, but I reckon the ground was only slightly faster on the Wednesday)and note that Sanc was held up, Menorah would have been over 15 lengths behind at half-way. And again Sanc finished faster than Menorah from the last. I don't think that race was very good at all especially when you look how close they all finished. If a CH contender appears from last years novice (Dunguib excepted) I will give up drinking - well maybe not completely. |

Yes, largely agree, The Sawyer. See my earlier post on this thread about the SN possibly not being especially strong last season.
The first three in the SN last season would have to improve significantly to be in with a shout in the CH this season. That is why I wrote that Menorah would have to mature physically and improve in other respects too if he is to make a splash in open company. The CH last season was clearly run at a faster pace than the SN and the early pace in particular was stronger. However, by comparison with the smaller field novice races over 16-17f SN contenders typically contest earlier in the season, the pace in the SN was sound enough. I don't think I said it was a fast pace or that it compared favourably with the pace in the CH. But it wasn't a crawl either. My point about Menorah was that he looks a horse that is better in a larger field on good ground where he is more likely to get a better pace than in many small field, softer ground races. |
