Might sound stupid, but I much prefer Presentings over fences than hurdles, unguib might respect them more as well. Has this been mentioned by connections. Would get a proper jockey over fences and be a cert for the arkle in my opinion??

d lad cant jump hurdles never mind fences. no fan of the flat but would send him to dermot weld and go the rite of passage roue

No the plan is definitely to stay over hurdles and go the CH route

cant see dunguib winning a champion hurdle,its more often than not an ex flat horse who wins the champion as they have that bit of speed and class that gives them the edge!

I started a thread last season saying he should go Arkle. His cruising speed would be put to good use over fences. Can't see them sending him there though.

he cant jump hurdles because he dosent respect them hed be an awesome chaser things dident pan out right for em last season but hes still a ver very good horse

I think you should of named the thread 'Any chance of Dunguib taking on Big Bucks'. Thats what i would have in mind

Still find it weird that Dunguib is slightly older than Big Bucks!
If they were serious about chasing would have thought now is the time. Imo too much is made of Dunguibs hurdling problems. Was a novice last season. Ok, so some horses have more natural hurdling talent but whats the point of novice hurdling if it isn't to learn? And he's not even that bad anyway. |

At the end of the day he ran a furlong further than anything else in teh Supreme and got beat what, 1.5 lengths ?

Can anyone actually name me a horse who disrespected hurdles but was a brilliant chaser?

Would hardly say brilliant chaser but Young Kenny immediately springs to mind. He was a novicey jumper of hurdles and went onto be rated 150+ (off top of head) over fences.

Ive just had a look at Young Kennys record and had forgotten he had won a Scottish National so maybe I underestimated how good he was over fences.

He's light framed and doesn't have the stamp of a chaser. That's why connections are not thinking of putting him over fences.

Philip Fenton has confirmed that his star hurdler Dunguib will be saved for the second half of the season, in order to have him at his peak for the major prizes in the spring.
The top class bumper performer barely came off the bridle in his four appearances over obstacles last winter but was then beaten at odds-on in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, before finishing only sixth in the Rabobank Champion Hurdle at Punchestown. Fenton said: “Everything is fine, he’s in good form and we’re very happy with him. He’s just cantering away at the moment and we made the decision that he wouldn’t start off until after Christmas because we don’t want to run him in heavy ground again.” He added: “We just think that the second half of the season is more important than the first half, so hopefully we’ll see him some time in January. “The Irish Champion Hurdle might be ambitious for his first run but that might be an option, we’ll just have a look and see nearer the time. I’ve still got every faith in him and he’s in brilliant order.” |

Former star bumper performer Dunguib is on course to return to the racecourse in the new year.
His reappearance has yet to be decided but the 2m3f Limestone Lad Hurdle at Naas on January 15 and the 2m Red Mills Trial Hurdle at Gowran Park a month later are possibilities. The Grade 1 BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown on January 23 has also been discussed, but trainer Philip Fenton believes it would be “ambitious for a first run of the season”. Fenton added: “He’s grand and I’m happy with him so far. The weather would have held him up anyway as, while we have been able to keep them all ticking over, I would have liked to have done a little bit more with him if he was to be running sooner. He’s on track, but where he runs will depend on how ready he is when these races come up. We’ll step up his work in the next few weeks.” Dunguib was a hugely impressive winner of the 2009 Cheltenham Bumper, beating subsequent Ascot Gold Cup winner Rite Of Passage. However he never proved a natural over hurdles last season despite winning all his races up until the Supreme Novices Hurdle where he finished third to Menorah. He ended the season with a sixth place behind Hurricane Fly at Punchestown. |

This was discussed a bit on the Menorah thread and the consensus seemed to be that it is very difficult to turn a horse of Dunguib's age from a bungler into a fluent hurdler.
Perhaps they'd be better trying him over fences - I wouldn't let his make and shape put me off a potential 'chasing career. |

I was @ Cheltenham last week and got chating to some fella who had connections in the yard and he said that he could well be aimed at the Akle and the market would reflect this with the horse having been backed in over the past week from over £150/1 to around £70/1 now. Got myself a few quid on so fingers crossed!

Seems late in the day if he was they need to get him some experience and by the time he comes out that will be too late imo. |

2004 Arkle winner Well Chief went into that race with just one Novice Chase on his CV - he won that race on Feb 4th

Yes I know I had 500 at 20s on him after the race
 but that was a rarity and Dunguib is unlikely to be as excellent a jumper as Well Chief turned out. |

eric, we're close to the end of this year and I doubt you will be pipped at the post for the latest after-timer title of 2010 - nobody will beat 7 years for my money
