His manager was in the press up here the other day saying he wanted Burns to have a defence in Glasgow in January, then fight Broner in the spring, plus he wanted £500,000 and not £400,000. Another article quotes Morrison as saying he has talked Burns out of it. He is on a 'downer' after his last defence being cancelled. Ffs, what kind of defence would it have been anyway?

This sort of thing kills boxing. Just get on a plane and fight the guy. If Broner turns out to be as good as some say then losing won't be a disgrace plus he may go up in weight soon anyway.
Report notsohappy December 21, 2012 10:39 PM GMT
spot on john92, losing to a fighter like broner shouldnt mean the end of your career.what happened to being the best fighter in the world.its a shame being (a)world champion does not mean your the best, and who's to say burns wouldn't win?
Report steeringjobnap December 22, 2012 1:33 PM GMT
Ricky's jab is world-class and can cause AB's rolling-shoulder defence problems.

Losing to Broner wouldn't be the end of the world; De Marco & Abril also eminently beatable titlists in the division.

Broner likely to soon step-up to LWW; a show-down with Danny Garcia as a stepping-stone to a future shot at Floyd.

PS FW seems intent on destroying RB's career. And/or Nathan Cleverly's.
Report owl4life December 22, 2012 3:01 PM GMT
He's not trying to destroy it, just milk it for all he can.

Having Burns fight third rate opposition in Scotland is money for old rope.

Cleverly is in a weak division and still hasn't fought anyone, getting sad now. Got his mandatory in March which means he won't be in a big fight til at least September.
Report sj December 23, 2012 7:06 PM GMT
They already ran from Broner at SFW. They dont want the fight end of. Broner's first fight at LW he fights the WBC champ and many people's number 1 in the division. Burns for a 2 weights world champ defences consists of Mitchell Layera Evensen Moses Katsidis, not hard is it?

Watch it SJ or the angry Burns mob'll be out. How can anyone, Scottish or not, defend the path this fella is taking?
Report sj December 26, 2012 12:40 PM GMT
LOL I know mate. Latest is that Burns has been offerd £300K for the fight, his highest is 120K for Mitchell. Time to step up now becoming pretty poor to be fair. Maybe they are looking to get the super fight with Super Feather Liam Walsh cos he did have a life and death battle with Paul Appleby who really is world class
Report Jimmy Diamond December 26, 2012 2:03 PM GMT
Yep, pretty poor from Burns. Cant fault the Katsidis fight or the Mitchell one as both were decent level operators but Laryea, Evenson and Moses are shocking level of opponents. To then schedule Walsh in was quite pathetic by Warren...........its taking the piss really........and to think all this started when he beat Rocky Martinez CryCry.....
Report john92 December 26, 2012 9:21 PM GMT
I won't pretend to be an expert but I'm Scottish, take a decent interest in most sports and would love to see a Scottish guy in some big fights and trying to unify titles.

I'm really disappointed Ricky hasn't stepped up before now. He has convincingly beaten enough decent opponents and should be going to mix it with other belt holders. Simple as that. Some of his fights have been a waste of time. Apart from those earning out of them obviously...

It's sad that those who are meant to be looking out for him seem to have talked him out of such a big fight against a guy who may well have bigger fish to fry very soon. All for the sake of another show at the SECC.

I read that this morning aswell. Fair play to Rees and good luck to him.

I might have got this wrong but Ricky comes across as a genuine, likeable guy and it seems he is being let down. What kind of manager talks a fighter out of this kind of fight? Ffs. Burns spoke last year about a unification fight with Fana at Airdrie's stadium and I think he got Nicky Cook instead!

Very disappointing and a reminder of why I don't take more of an interest in boxing.

Would love to see Ricky get a shot at Broner but as long as he is promoted by Warren i have my doubts that it will happen. Warren doesn't do risky fights and this one looks extremely risky.
Report Geesyerdosh December 29, 2012 10:14 AM GMT
Ricky should come out and explain what's going on especially if he expects 10k to turn up in Glasgow in the near future.

To say he's scared of Broner is utter bollax he's a professional boxer ffs. The weight was killing him at 130 and I'm assuming the fight happens on the Mayweather undercard in May.

And what does Ricky bring? He can sell out a place which is more than Broner can do. East Stirling have as many fans as Broner. And why shouldn't he get a massive payday? He's a champion who's a cert to lose his belt according to most so he may as well earn out of it. And why is it alright for Broner to refuse to fight outside the US and its ok? Has he something to hide? Is he gonna be another midget that ends up a many multiple weight champion battering opponents twice his size round the ring?

Obviously the next opponent will be laughable as a tune up but if after that the Broner fight is there to be made and Burn's team duck it then he'll deserve all the shiite that goes with it.
Report sj December 29, 2012 1:03 PM GMT

300-400gbp is like 600-700 thousand dollars. Dats alot of money, alot more than any low profile American out there. How much did demarco get for his attempt.

I like burns, I like him alot.

But he shouldn't have turned down that.

He will need to make 10 defences v African guys to make that money.

Sad from burns who looked brilliant v Mitchell.
Report tobermory December 31, 2012 11:19 PM GMT
I've always defended Burns against what has been unjustified criticism on here before.

Can't defend that though, very disappointing Sad

I would have given him a good chance vs Broner and think at least he would have enhanced his reputation. Even if he'd been blown away the reaction would have been more about how good Broner is rather than anything against Burns .He could still have filled Scottish venues and would be more of a 'name' worldwide and so could have had a go at another belt in the division.

The reputation of boxers is not about how many wins or even particulary who they have beaten, really people remember them for who they fought before anything else.

If Thomas Hearns had ducked Leonard and Hagler he would have won the same number of World Titles and had 2 less defeats on his record, but he would nowadays only be remembered by the real hardcore fans and would be about 100 places lower on the all time lb4lb lists.

After all when Ricky goes to the states he will be going with a 50/50 chance of winningit like so who have went over in the last few years,it's hard enough getting a decision over there without being 100% even though I personally think Ricky will stop him"

Great move from Warren I said this was the fight to get, more than win able fight you can bet Vasquez is cheap(his style is not fan friendly) it s a unification and it gives him more bargaining power with Broner, although Morrison's figure of £500,000 will still be hard to get.

Got to give Warren some credit for landing Burns a unification fight. However although Vasquez is the IBF champ but he has been beating up on tomato cans for the best part of his career. The only two times he has fought against an elite level fighter he was well beaten on points. Burns may not be of the level of Canelo or Bradley but fighting at home against a fighter lacking KO power he has everything stacked in his favour and as such will win fairly comfortably.

what a pity the Broner ship has sailed now though. Can't help but be disappointed by that but I think this will prove to be a good move. The may fight isn't going to be anything special obviously but if they could get Vasquez in September his career could soon be back on track. Plenty big enough to move up to 140 and chase the big fights in the future too.

Would Eddie really feed Rees to him? Bit harsh on Rees coming so soon after the Broner beatdown I'd have thought.
