Anyone see The Fight of Their Lives on ch24 last night? Fantastic program about the 1995 fight between Nigel Benn and Gerald McClellan, i fight i watched live and will never forget.

Anyway it was alleged that Benn was pumped up on steroids that night. I have never heard of this before but it was a bit strange that after the fight Benn fainted as he got near his dressing room and as a result avoided a drug test. McClellan was the hot favourite and maybe Benn feared defeat so took steroids.

Discuss.

“I’m not letting something like this happen. So many people say I’ll defend it afterwards. No, I’m defending my name right now. I’ll say this only once — I have never, ever, taken performance-enhancing drugs.

“If you said I took recreational drugs, yeah, I’d put my hands up. If they said they’d found a spliff in my urine, then it’s possible. But that’s not performance-enhancing, and they couldn’t say they’d found cocaine, because I’ve never done that.

“Even finding traces of marijuana would be a shock, because before a fight I’d go away for 8-10 weeks and train hard, eat healthy, and stay away from all the bad stuff.

“But performance-enhancing drugs? That’s not me, and I’m not going to let my name be tarnished like Ben Johnson and those guys.”

Benn, 47, is even more determined to avoid that sort of smear because he became a born-again Christian three years ago, going down on his knees in front of wife Carolyne and confessing a multitude of sins. He did the same thing in front of his children, his pastor, and the congregation at his local church.
Despite living in Spain, he is now a frequent visitor to prisons and churches in the UK, preaching a message of repentance and forgiveness.

He swears he left nothing out of his confession — owning up to orgies and a string of extra-marital affairs — and refuses to be branded a liar.

He said: “I had many affairs, had children outside wedlock. I hurt the woman I’ve loved dearly for 16 years. I confessed that to my wife, my children and my dad.

“What I had to confess to Carolyne — if you ever saw a black man turn white, that was me. And now any lie is something we couldn’t live with.

“If I can say all those things do you think I’m going to say ‘Oh hang on a minute, I forgot to mention taking steroids?’ You think I could keep something like that up my sleeve?

Yes as it may damage any future chances of locative media work.

Holyfeild was even more believable in his interviews.

Let's just think of it on a personal level. How many times have we lied to keep that 1lie we told hidden.

Benn admits to bull5hiting, yet he says his all truthful now. His even a Christian and a good 1 too. How much has he donated to mcclellen. His had nothing but bad words to say about him as far as I can remember. Eubank bought a painting of his for 10k to help with his care, benn refused.

Now I bet he says he regrets in 5 years time but I can't give anything now since I'm totaly skint.

Boxing is a sport, nothing more nothing less. Of course benn dnt need to help gerelad. But where's the humanity in that.

By not ever giving anything to gerald benn truly showed his dark side.

Think abt it, he can't live with this and he can't live with that yet he can live with giving gereld nothing.

If I was him I could live with all the lies but I couldn't live with not helping gereld once.

Both benn and gereld fought an amazing fight, both were willing to fight to the death, so I can't understand his hate towards him. Y all the bitterness

I'm pretty sure most boxers (and MMA fighters before I get accused of bashing boxing) are taking PEDs.

I doubt many are on them the day of the fight, they take them during training camp.

No surprise that VADA is catching a few of them out as they do random testing during training camps, much more effective than a post-fight drug test.

Who knows? He has said a few time he used to take about 80 supplement tablets a day. Maybe a few were less than legal?! I think performance enhancing drug use is pretty commonplace. As a professional athlete pushing your limits the temptation is always to seek ways of breaking new ground and improving. It's just human nature I guess.

Didn't Benn help out GM a couple of years at a fund raiser in GB?

Yes he did Builders, and he also went to meet the G Man. There was lots of tears and no bad blood.

Why this thread has cropped up now is a bit bizarre.

McClennan was an utter scumbag and whilst I wouldn't wish that on any human being; he had a hell of a lot of karma coming back to him.
