On Sky TV this morning they said Timeform rated Bow Echo 131 on his 2000 Guineas win.
Bow Echo's pedigree is unusual. He is closely inbred.
Close inbreeding is often a negative if found in the first three generations of a pedigree.
There is a similarity between Bow Echo's inbreeding and that of Enable (2014) (f).
Bow Creek is a male and he is inbred 3 x 3 to a duplicated dam, Zomaradah (1995) (f).
Note that the duplicated ancestor (Zomaradah (f)) is the opposite sex to Bow Echo (m).
In the pedigree Zomaradah produces a son (Dubawi) and a daughter (Dubai Queen) i.e both sexes.
Enable is a female and he is inbred 3 x 2 to a duplicated sire, Sadler's Wells (1981) (m).
Note that the duplicated ancestor (Sadler's Wells (m)) is the opposite sex to Enable (f).
In the pedigree Sadler's Wells produces a son (Galileo) and a daughter (Concentric) i.e both sexes.
Inbreeding 3 x 3 or closer e.g. 2 x 3; 3 x 2; 2 x 2, seldom results in a good runner.
The closely inbred horse could be a good breeder / producer.
The one time it might work is when the duplicated ancestor is the opposite sex to the runner.
I found one horse that was inbred 3 x 3 to Zomaradah (f), as is Bow Echo.
The one horse is the filly Adoon Valley (2022) (f) who was also trained by George Boughey.
Adoon Valley (f) ran three times and was rated 79 (Official Rating).
She ran three times without winning.
Adoon Valley was inbred 3 x 3 to a same sex ancestor (Zomaradah (f)).
Perhaps Bow Echo was out of better parents?
His sire Night Of Thunder rated 121.
His dam Aristocratic Lady rated 98.
Adoon Valley (f) had these parents
Too Darn Hot rated 126
Jordan Princess rated 104.
A quick look at a few other horses inbred closely to Dubawi (sire of Bow Echo's sire).
Ghaiyyath Park (f) 2 x 3 to Dubawi (m) was rated 55.
Hawa Jumeirah (g) 2 x 3 to Dubawi (m) was rated 55.
Power Blue (m) 2 x 3 to Dubawi (m) was rated 113. ***
Thakheera (f) 3 x 2 to Dubawi (m) was rated 62.
Vintage Heat (m) 2 x 3 to Dubawi (m) was rated 65.

Why is he rated higher (113) than the other horses closely inbred to Dubawi (55; 55; 62; 65)?

These two are found in the pedigree of Dubawi, and the Shirley Heights in Dubawi is a son (opposite sex).
Power Blue is also inbred 4 x 4 to Rahy (m) who produced a son (Noverre) and a daughter (Wigman) in Power Blue.

I posted a reply yesterday but it did not appear on the forum.
Close inbreeding seldom works (3x3, 2x3, 3x2) Breeders who use it tend to send their mares to their own stallions. |

Yes, I think Jim Bolger's breeding policies are largely ineffective. He used to have around 75 mares at his Redmondstown Stud, but the stakes winners he produced were much less than I would have expected. He bred from a lot of mares that were well below average and, IMO, his indulgences must have cost him a great deal of money. The fact that he did not change them only supports the view that he was a stubborn and volatile maverick.
