Have noticed that Jim Bolger seems to inbreed extremely closely with a lot of his homebreds.
Playing devils advocate, do you think he's wasting his time? |

Close inbreeding seldom works (3x3, 2x3, 3x2) Breeders who use it tend to send their mares to their own stallions. |

Yes, I think Jim Bolger's breeding policies are largely ineffective. He used to have around 75 mares at his Redmondstown Stud, but the stakes winners he produced were much less than I would have expected. He bred from a lot of mares that were well below average and, IMO, his indulgences must have cost him a great deal of money. The fact that he did not change them only supports the view that he was a stubborn and volatile maverick.
