It was back in the early 2000's when I first started following horse racing.
Now, nearly 20 years later, I still remember the night that OUIJA BOARD won at the 2006 Breeders Cup. Sat in the living room of the family home with my Dad, I can still remember the commentary almost word for word.
It was with much sadness that I read earlier today that she had passed away at the age of 21.
It is with a heavy heart and a lump in my throat that I post below a link to the aforementioned race.
Surely breeding one as good as her (both on and off the track) is something every breeder aspires to...
RIP indeed. She was part of the Ed Dunlop golden years with fillies. Lailani was first and still my favourite. She raced a couple of times at 2 and I first noticed her in a Windsor maiden at 3 when her pedigree and owner (Makhtoum al Makhtoum) led me to back her at a very attractive price of 3/1 rated around 80 after that win! Needless to say, she won and remained unbeaten in 6 subsequent starts in 5 months including the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. She was never odds on so was very lucrative to follow. The Breeders Cup on firm ground proved a step too far and she was retired. The third great filly was of course Snow Fairy.
