Great loss to breeding as David Thompson has passed away. Hope it carries on.

I'm sure it will sageform can't see any reason for them to stop, huge amount of mares and stallions and they have also moved into N.H. horses on a massive scale been responsible for some huge prices been paid for same..

Almost certain to get sold on in the next couple of years. My guess is they knew he was ill and hence the foray into his much loved NH racing. No decent stallion to follow Pivotal, expect to see Mayson and 1 or 2 others move on next year and a big cull of mares.

Now with K Abdullah passing as well there will be a lot of decent bloodstock on the market over the next year or two.

Truehoncho , how do you see the Judd situation turning out , is it possible to keep the whole thing going or do you know if he has children who will continue the breeding operation.. ..
Report truehoncho January 15, 2021 9:55 AM GMT
He has daughters that are married to racehorse owners. Fahd for instance (won the derby with Generous) but none that would be in it at his level. That would be a massive undertaking. They were already selling off lots of mares and my guess is that that will continue. The current stallions will continue but it will all just wind down over the next few years. There will be a lot of very wealthy owners and breeders (UK and USA) hovering like vultures waiting to grab the choicest cuts!!

Any inside info here truehonch or is this just conjecture?

Prince Fahd Salman died in 2001 so I guess any interest that was likely to come from that side of things would have materialised by now.

Khalid  Abdullah had 7 children in total so there must be a chance that someone might have an interest in some sort of continuance.

Hope so.

Just conjecture PotM. Its probably too big for someone without an already serious interest, but you never know. My guess is there will be some nice fillies and mares available at the sales for you to bolster your broodmare band with over the next couple of years.

I find the Juddmonte draft dead easy to assess truehonch, I don’t bother looking.

In my quest to find a mare I would like to live with I have to take a big hit on Page.

Understandably there is a big clamour for the Green and Pink mares and only the truly horrible would be available to me and it is just daft having one big smart mare after another pulled out, it is a little demoralising!

I do take comfort though with an organisation as well run as their’s though.
I think they must be very good at knowing what mares to chuck out. When a ‘family’ or a particular mare is proving very reliable at slow, unsound, mad etc. do I really want that near certainty on my place?

It’s just little me and I can’t move a mare to another barn or another farm when she needs bandaging, box resting or tries to take my arm off at the shoulder every time a bucket comes into view!

F... knows what technical sh1t I’m getting wrong now.
Report truehoncho January 16, 2021 5:17 PM GMT
You have hit a nerve there. I have a mare that from the day I bought her from a decent outfit I have had to treat her with one thing or another. I want to get her to Tweehhills in the Spring but her leg keeps blowing up and I am nervous about leaving her with anyone else. Its a real nuisance.
Report potentialmillionaire January 16, 2021 8:24 PM GMT
I had one of those last year truehonch and they are indeed a worry.
Luckily this time around she has had some time in for a different problem and it hasn’t really reoccurred so I am keeping everything crossed.

Are you able to keep your mare out, because that’s the key isn’t it?

Would you look to board her somewhere where they might be able to cater for the problem type at a bit less money too?
Report truehoncho January 18, 2021 9:36 AM GMT
I have a paddock I have sacrificed this winter to keep her out and it was frozen here for a few weeks  so I put her in a big field which helped and got the swelling down. Its very wet here now so she gets a light lunge on the woodchip and out in the muddy paddock and its looking ok for now.

I am looking at a 1/2 way house solution. There is a vets in Cumbria that board mares and seem sensibly priced so I will keep my fingers crossed it works out.
Report potentialmillionaire January 18, 2021 10:15 AM GMT
If you want to get her nearer truehonch I would recommend a stud manager local to Tweenhills who you could talk to as I would guess they would get as much time on a surface or a Walker into her as she needed.
A conscientious operation run by a proper hands on horseperson.

I am trashing more of my land this winter in the hope that more land damaged but with less damage to a  larger area will recover quickly in the spring anyway.

So far we are not wading in the mud too much and I am quite pleased with the experiment. Not least because I am not taking my life into my own hands with 6 buckets and lose fitting wellies!
Report truehoncho January 18, 2021 10:46 AM GMT
I may well take you up on that PotM. The reason I am keen on this outfit in Carlisle is that I have no vets I can use locally anymore for breeding services. I am hoping that I will be able to use these vets for all my mares in future and simplify things considerably. I can leave my box there through the season which saves 2hrs of cross country driving for every mating. They are right on the M6 which is a bit of a godsend to me.

I have a good friend who is a big agricultural contractor. He assures me he has a bit of kit that will roll and spike my field in the spring and if we seed it at the same time it will be usable and productive in late summer (providing it is dry) and by next year (if we don't trash it again in the winter) should be ok. Its about 1.5 acres so if it works I will do a different bit each year.

It might all be left to Teddy Grimthorpe?
Report potentialmillionaire January 18, 2021 6:19 PM GMT
Truehonch your logistics sound a right pain in the A

Have you tried sticking a pin in equidistant Newmarket/Gloucestershire/Hampshire and looking for a reasonably priced boarding stud to take all your mares every year?
That sounds expensive for sure but will boarding them at the vets not be pricey too?

I think that Grimthorpe is I.c.racing sage and Erskine Crumb will stand above and alongside him and Simon Mockeridge at the stud.
Report truehoncho January 19, 2021 9:02 AM GMT
They don't seem to be any more expensive, they specialise in this sort of thing. I have had good reports from non-thoroughbred breeders about them. I will do my own transporting (it'll be easier than it used to be) which keeps the cost down. I think it's a case of suck it and see.
Report potentialmillionaire January 19, 2021 1:33 PM GMT
Well I hope you can find a bit of stability truehonch after your most unhelpful vets last year.

Anything  should be an improvement!

think every forum on betfair except chitchat is pertaining to betting, can see why persons involved in breeding would migrate to this forum.
Report roadrunner46 January 21, 2021 8:40 AM GMT
reason there is very few threads on this forum about betting, just proves how far behind the curve gamblers are on this subject, and it only takes one trail blazer to pave the way for others.
Report sageform January 21, 2021 9:08 AM GMT
And one benefit of a forum with relatively few posts is that a thread does not disappear off the page in a few hours! Not everyone who has a Betfair account is solely interested in betting.

Pivotal now retired. Not sure if there are any real stallion prospects there now.
Report potentialmillionaire February 17, 2021 1:33 PM GMT
I agree that Ulysses has a profile that doesn’t inspire commercial confidence truehonch but I think with his pedigree, looks and talent he does have prospects.
Mind you, whether we should link prospective talent with any horse is a moot point, most of them are no good!
Report truehoncho February 17, 2021 4:27 PM GMT
I was really thinking about a commercial substitute for P. There are so many Galileo's around, unless you get an exceptional one I doubt it will command too much of a premium. It's a shame they couldn't get a good son of P.
Report Formtwist February 17, 2021 5:29 PM GMT
Kyllachy was a pretty good son of Pivotal!
Report truehoncho February 19, 2021 9:03 AM GMT
Yes FT, I think he did well for them. He was at £15k at one point and got plenty of mares and winners for them. I bet they would welcome a couple more like him.
Report Formtwist February 19, 2021 10:01 AM GMT
It may well be that Twilight Son will follow the same path, his first crop were in similar type to Kyllachy, got lots of winners plus the requisite stakes performers and his yearlings and foals were very saleable on the back of those results.
Report truehoncho February 19, 2021 11:33 AM GMT
I quite like TS. I did try to get a thread going on him a little while ago as he was on my list. If he gets a decent one this year he could well be on an upward trajectory next year. He is still 1/2 his first season fee and I think it could be good value.....but then again!
