Dear all, I hoping for some advise from my fellow forumites. You have never let me down so far so no pressure.
So on Wednesday I returned to the scene of the crime to pick up something to sell next year.
This time I've tried to learn from this years mistakes / near misses and went for a colt by a dependable (ish) Sire where the page was well established and I wasn't relying on any updates. Now he wouldn't be the biggest, is a bit short coupled and is out of an older mare but he has a swagger and at the price despite these shortcomings I thought represented value.
Well having not sought any updates, that is exactly what I got last night when a half sister won a maiden in Toulouse having finished 2nd in Oct first time out (something I found out after the sale as I missed the update
)
The trouble is my knowledge of French racing is poor. Is Toulouse a Newbury, Haydock or Goodwood? Or is it more of a Bath, Catterick or Beverley?
Should I be excited? He's with a decent trainer now having seemingly being purchased after finishing 2nd in Oct.
Now the other thing is if this update is decent I'm thinking of maybe putting him into the Feb Mixed sale and flipping him quickly, has anyone on here done this sort of quick turnaround before? Is it worth a go?
Should I hold fire for the Yearling sales to see if the half sister goes onto even bigger things or is it worth trying to take a quick profit without incurring many expenses?
Any experiences, views and opinions greatly recieved.

Well done PP, any winning update is a good update. For what it's worth, I had one with EJ O'neil over there and thought the standard was about 10lb below here in the UK.

Posh, you are due a big change of luck it seems to me and I do hope it comes your way this time. Whilst I know little of French racing, a winner anywhere there is better than Italy, Spain or points much further east so far as I can see. As to when you sell, the colt himself will surely guide you - February is pretty soon and wintry to return a foal to the ring and if some are mentally and physically robust enough to cope, most others will take longer to recoup and develop as you would wish to show them. If updates become seriously attractive, the agents will find you outside of a sale ring. Aside from that, what did you make of the sale as a whole and any implication for we vendors at Tatts next week?

Thanks for the input gents, any update is definitely a positive and I take your 10lb point and would say that's a fair assessment.
In respect of the sales, I don't think they were a patch on last year, there was nowhere near the number of people and buzz as last year. I understand that my fingers were not the only ones that got burned. Consequently buyers are generally being more measured, selective and quite disciplined. Last year you could sell just about anything, this year not so much. As always if you've a nice one you will be fine. If it's by the right sire even more so. Of the cheaper sires, Zebedee, Clodovil, Camacho, Footstepsinthesand & Choisir sold well as did the Rock Of Gibraltars! The only sire that's cold as ice is Lilbourne Lad. |

PP i thought the sales were a write off at the lower end, I didnt go back through the results but my feeling, unlike you, was that ROG, Choisir, Zebedee were very poor. You had to give away Fast Company and Arcano (two reasonable sires in my book) Approve, you couldnt even give them away

I suppose it's all about perception, I looked at a number of the offspring of all of those I mentioned and was underbidder on a Zebedee and a Camacho.
Arcano's move overseas has not helped his cause despite having over 40% winners to runners in Europe. Approve is also in the doghouse, saw a nice one of his (615) which had nice enough paper too, unsold for 14,500. Nicest horse I saw on the day was a Duke of Marmalade (630) which made 19,000 which I thought was a good price for one of his. I thought the ones I was after were making €5k more than I wanted to pay, still I would say that as I was buying. |

What did you make of the first foals of the new sires that were there?

FT I'm afraid I didn't look at a single foal by any of the new boys so I have no views, sorry.
