A sad day today as the Elite Racing Club's star broodmare Ffestiniog was retired from breeding duties.

Bought for around 24000 guineas, the mare (Efisio-Penny Fan) was the clubs first ever listed winner on the flat, winning the Radley Stakes at Newbury.

Retired to the breeding sheds, she had a distinguished career, with 10 out of her 11 foals winning a total of 43 races and around £720000 in win and place prize money, including the pattern race winners Eisteddfod, Border Patrol, Brecon Beacon and Boston Lodge.  Her 10 winners had RPR's of between 80-116

Her final winner was the 3yo colt Man of Harlech (by Dansili) who won a maiden well at Windsor last week.

Ffestiniog's retirement means that now all of the 3 ERC 'Foundation mares' are either dead or retired, the other two mares being Kabayil (dam of Dancing Bay among others) and Kalinka (Dam of Soviet Song, Penzance, Affinity and Sister Act).

Ffestiniog has two daughters to carry on her line-Oceans Apart (already a broodmare) and the 4yo New Fforest (in training with Andrew Balding).

A sad day, but a tremendous record to look back on, for a mare who will hopefully enjoy a long and happy retirement.
