Isn't he doing well, knocking in the winners including classy Royal Ascot winners and GR placed ones too.Something that fellow first season sire Bushranger is lacking.Always thought he'd get the job done despite a low fee along with bargain basement mares. No doubt about it this young sire has a very similar profile to Acclamation, but this one gets very scopey sorts who look like they will train on.Remember me saying many times about families well case in point here compair Dandy Man's fast high class page against Bushranger's plebeian one and is the difference with their results such a surprise really?IMO this horse has a real chance of making it.
dandy man was a top draw sprinter, parabold and extortionist on the dam side, are from group 1 sprinters. double dose of speed in those bloodlines. makes sense they have made the most progress. bargain at the price 4k, suppose you need the good mares to produce the black type horses. could be wrong, looks to me that the best time to make an investment, is in the first crop when the prices are still low. must be expensive to have mares from group 1 sprinters, maybe there are cheap cast offs around.

Mind you I'm not sure if I think of his page as a great one, it's certainly a struggle to get past Sandhurst Prince!!
Are you not sure oh long lost one, that you would look on his pedigree quite so favourably if it didn't have a certain resonance for you
what is fascinating is what with quite an inbred horse as he is, he seems very fond of more of the same. God only knows what will become of some of his useful daughters that may have 2 lines of Danzig and the other of Night Shift.
Looking for a young and presumably heading trendywards stallion to send a young or maiden mare to, he's looking like he's going to be near the top of that particular list.
I've got mares that he'll suit aplenty!

Posh Paddy 25 Jun 13 13:08 Oh what could have been.........
Yes PP, what a shame that was.
'Are you not sure oh long lost one, that you would look on his pedigree quite so favourably if it didn't have a certain resonance for you'
Pot M' that's as maybe, but the point I am making is that there is class there and most importantly it is fast and early. As far as mares he would suit, I would agree he would suit plenty. He does a nice type consistently and that is half the battle as we all know.
Has that foal from the 'northern one' improved?

Keep the faith Pot M,the 'big' horse is going for the Nunthorpe....glad the foal is doing well,as you may remember I have a few by him myself,I have a very smart racy colt that is smashing,I guess you plan to sell this year, next year he will have plenty running. His first crop after Gilt Edge Girl hits the yearling sales this year, and he had some classy fast mares so he should do well in that dept'and so we'd hope enhance this years foals,so if that's your plan don't worry too much, but next years yearlings by him will have the help of his class runners.Lets hope they deliver,he's being seen as Compton the 2nd

Will do Prima, I 'm glad the big horse is still viable as I was worried by his absence.
Tbh. I was thinking of selling this mare whilst in foal so it comes as a bit of a surprise that I have the foal atall! I will probably sell as a foal but I have news hot off the press as I bought a tiny stud at auction this week (nothing grand but much excitement as you can imagine) so I will have room to keep the odd yearling if I have to. So maybe if our friend in the north needs another year I could think about it!

Wow PM, us forumites get excited when one of us buys or sells a mare or yearling, let alone buy an entire stud! I had noticed that Plantation Stud was on the market again!
How fantastic, I'm thrilled for you. Is it in the UK or are you emigrating?

It is here and local to me and my rented pigsties ( and how glad I shall be to give them up)so it works well from all angles. No need for me to make new friends which as you can guess is a boon for a grumpy git such as myself!
Just got the small matter of the "bridge" between the purchase of this and the sale of that wot funds it. Still we know all about stress in this game don't we!

All the very best on your purchase PotM, I'm sure you will make a great success of it.
On the subject of the stallion in question, when the DBS representative came to look at my yearling (he was accompanied by Lynda Perratt by the way), he gave me good reports about the yearlings he had seen by him.

That's great news Pot'M how exciting,we both wish you luck with the new venture too.
truehoncho,I'd agree as speaking about the stallion with the sales representatives myself they have all said they are very pleased with the stock they have seen.I'm told he will have some nice ones in the Premier sale at Doncaster, that shows that however 'cheap' he is he's also seen as very exceptable.I did have a look at that mare you like coming up at Tatt's lot 48,she looks fine to me,if she's a good sort and within your budget then take a chance. The stallion we're talking about here wouldn't be a bad commercial choice for her next year either,he does get good sorts whilst keeping it speedy. For any small commercial stud those two factors are very important.Good luck.

Thanks again PP. it's going we'll as with interest rates as rubbish as they are you can tempt friends and family out of the closet by offering a few percent over the rubbish rates on their savings!
Truehonch I just aim to keep plodding along really, as you know it's all about avoiding disaster! Am hoping to put in an appearance at Tatts july, but I think I will look at fillies so I'll leave my millions clear of lot 48!
Thanks Prima, it is indeed exciting and I daresay I will be doing a bit of panicking on here in the months to come so may I suggest you book another sabbatical?

Laa-dee-da PotM, you had me fooled as a scrimp and save bottom feeder like myself and off you go buying Studs!
Amusingly I too fancied Dandy Man and was all set to send a mare but after a few unresponded phone messages to Mr Foley Mrs Y gave up. Certainly showing up Bushranger (who I seem to remember being very pop here) so far but early days.

Yer ma, where we differ is that I suspect I am nearer the ancient stage than you! As such I and significant other had cobbled enough of a life over the years to have a small house to flog to buy said 'stud'
We are not talking grand here!!!

Yes yer ma you are right Bushranger has been popular on this forum not least by me,because he always was going to very commercial as a first season sire. His sale results have backed that theory up unanimously across the board no doubt about that. But however Dandy Man has not been without his supporters, of which I have been one. Whilst Bushranger was always going to be popular in the sale ring I had my doubts about whether he would turn it in on the course. He has nothing on his page to suggest he would be any good as a sire, but what he does have in his favour for first season sire honours is numbers. He has so many to run for him that you would think he should stand a good chance to be leading. Dandy Man is almost the polar opposite, he has enough on his page to suggest he might do it, but has only a fraction of the numbers to run. He needs to be getting winners at a much higher percentage strike rate than Bushranger ever does to figure. So far this is what he appears to be doing. Whether Bushranger's sheer weight of numbers starts to close the gap only time will tell. I have always been a fan of Dandy Man, as I have said before he is a similar profile horse to Acclamation, classy but not top class, fast and with plenty of 2yo class on his page. When Posh Paddy was asking for suggestions to follow up his Baltic King, I suggested Dandy Man for that very reason, and not Bushranger for the other reason. Very sadly PP lost his mare whilst in foal which was a shame at the time and looks even more of a shame now. Next horse on the Bushranger route? IMO Zebedee. I am sure his yearlings will sell well this year and probably his foals too, but he lacks class on the page and is his dam's only winner. Clues like this are what you look for when trying to assess overall sire ability, different thing to overall comerciality. Bushranger and Zebedee are horses for using 1st season only, likes of Dandy Man can be great value 2nd or even 3rd time round. And sometimes you get one that does look like he will make it and stick around.

As you understand, the Portcullis has been singled out for special attention as it needs to function with lightening speed - in case buggers like you turn up!
It's all very run down and I am going to become trailer trash to boot but it it is all usable as it stands so can be a fairly relaxed work in progress.
plenty of good correspondence on here like this Dandy Man thread is what"s required so we are all keep the mistakes to a minimum and can keep trying to up the ante!

What I find fascinating sometimes is going back a couple of years on this forum, (luckily the output of the forum is so light so you don't have trawl too far back), take page 6, there happen to be old threads discussing Dandy Man & Kodiac. 2 years later and who are we all wittering on about - Dandy Man & Kodiac!
I think there is some real value in this forum and as you say PM, if we apply the lessons learned from it then we can hopefully dodge a few bullets going forward.

was talking to a man last night who said he sent 2 mares to him and he couldn't get either of them in foal. Bad luck for him the way things have turned out. He is sending them to Roderic O'Conner next, apparently he had trouble with his front legs and was actually a better horse than he managed to show, still won a Classic mind and he very well bred, out of a Danehill mare I think.

he has gone a bit quiet lately, I think Mastercraftsman might pip him. He has probably done enough to go to around 7k next year. Anyone thinking of using him?
