Not super commercial but always well bred, are mares from the AK,s lines worth chancing. They seem to fall into my price bracket (maybe not the best of reasons to buy them!!!) and you can be certain they have been well looked after.

Does anyone have an opinion on any particular lines of his? I did like the look of one in the last Tatts HIT sales lot 61 but it was withdrawn, what do people think?

I looked after an AK filly when I was at Cumani's years ago.  She was by Indian King out of a Relko mare - hardly fashionable.  She was pretty quick and I led a decent sprinter in Statoblest in his work a couple of times.  She was a poor breeder in that she didn't have many foals but her first was a listed winner and was placed in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.  You wouldn't have given the mare a second glance on paper (she was a lovely type thought to look at)- she won twice at 3 and was kept in training but seemed to lose the plot a bit at 4 (most probably something to do with the fact that they removed her regular rider - me - and stuck lads on her and she seemed to lose all confidence).  I think she was probably good enough to win a listed race.

Anyway, he does have some odd breeding at first glance but they do work.  And as you say they will have been well looked after.  If I were looking for myself, I would definitely take a punt on one.

I think truehonch that the purchase of an Aga mare is perhaps best approached like any other, just a 'simple' combo of conformation, pedigree and performance.

Obviously a nice Aga mare is a good place to start but they are mighty expensive and if they have a commercial look about them then in a way they are perhaps not the true essence of the Aga anyway.

The mare that Lairy Mary refers to had a bit more speed and substance than the usual types he produced and she would have been an interesting commercial model but I don't think the family has gone on.

I would be cr@pping myself if I was hoovering up an Aga mare at 2 k as I can just imagine what sort of conformation faults that would entail!

f you are prepared to buy a filly in training then I suspect a more commercial outfits throw out may still represent the best way ahead.

Thanks Mary and PotM.

I know a more commercial outfit is probably the safest bet PotM, but sometimes it would be nice to have a chance at a bit more class. My limited experience of viewing AK,s stock is that they tend to have decent confirmation, but as you have pointed out Mary, they tend to have obscure breeding.

By the way lot 61 from the HIT is now lot 84 at the July. Sny comments?

I assume the filly that interests you is by Mr Greely out of a Sadler's Wells mare.
I'm a punter, not a breeder, but my interest is pedigrees.
Her form is poor.  She has great sires on her dam line: Sadler's Wells; Darshaan; Ela-mana-Mou.
I tried to do test-matings to match her pedigree with sires at stud.
Most good horses have inbreeding matches, sire to dam, or they used to in the old days.
No great matches found for lot 61.
I do notice Mr Greely's dam's dam, Lianga, is also Danehill Dancer's dam's dam i.e Lianga she is on the dam line of both those sires, and their sons.
But does that mean anything?

Truehonch, I was thinking in terms of Cheveley, Coolmore, Newsells type of outfit so you get plenty of pedigree still but perhaps those that have been developed with a commercial/racing career balance.

I don't suggest for a minute that you go searching for a Compton Place filly say, out of a Cyrano de Bergerac mare because she has a commercial look and a bit of 2yo form.

I dislike that E family of the Aga's mind, and I suspect I am not alone!

kincsem, I was interested in her because I quite like Mr Prospector outcrosses to the Danzig line value stallions of which there are plenty around. She cost a lot of money as a yearling so I am assuming she has good confirmation (actualy I phoned M Botti who confirmed this), and she has a couple of siblings on the ground which could improve her.

Funny you should say that PotM, I was talking to someone who told about the AK's lines and he said the E family should be avoided but couldn't give me a reason why, can you? Also Potm, I do like Cheveley  Park lines and indeed did buy a cheap Medicean mare from one of their families who is looking ok.

Isn't Sandy a home bred truehonch? Her dam was a pricey type but she was by Sadlers!

It's a family of slow boats I think - rightly or wrongly - but if it's the latter it's a common misconception held by others.

If you bred a foal from that tribe with the merest hint of 'backward' the buyers would abandon you quicker than  a flash.

I can see why you would like the filly and I am happy with the overall shape of the page but I just wish it wasn't the E's.

I haven't started to work the catalogue yet so I don't know whether she will make the list or not!

Depends what sort of horse you want. I like Darshaan progeny myself and would love to have mares by him if I was a breeder.
