is anyone else a bit underwhelmed or is it a bit too early to form an opinion, let alone call?

Probably a bit early as he's got at least 800 first-crop 2-y-os to hit the track this year.........

Badly needs a few black type winners at least considering the prices they made.......could be another Mull Of Kintye imo...Sad

I agree, but there are a lot of good older sires of 2 yo's out there that have started well such as Kheleyf and Kodiac. With the likes of Iffraaj with big books to run this year it won't be easy for the new boys. I took a chance on Captain Gerrard in his 3rd season and am following him with interest but not a great deal of confidence!!

its too early to say

what about redclubs -what a loss he looks to be

what price would he be if he was still alive does everyone think ?

my guess- 20k

Myboycharlie looks iffy too.The market went mad for first season sprint sires, and now investors are paying the price. Why go for an unproven sire, when you can go to a proven one for the same money ? Will any of the bloodstock agents apologise to their clients for putting them on these very expensive failures ? I think not. They have got their commission thats all that matters.
Sam - recently purchased a Red Clubs filly (multiple winner)now in foal to Compton Place - delighted by recent results as you can imagine.

It's been this way for many a season now Dominion, and don't even get me started on 2-y-os retiring to stud.....

From a couple of crops with 27000 foals in the Tally Ho way sammy_fool, Red Clubs has only 5 runners that have managed a rating of 100+.

A sad loss for sure but I for one wouldn't quite know what to make of him.

One thing that is a shame is that he is completely free of ND, MrP and Blushing Groom. That made him something interesting to juggle with that would have stood him in good stead.

dominion, think of all those agents that pile into the new hot thing when their first crops hit the sales. They get to buy their clients something that's the height of fashion, which keeps a lot of owners happy I'm afraid, and then when it all goes t1ts up  they get to blame the sire, not themselves. I believe the tw@ts would refer that as a win-win Angry

Good point , PM,it would seem all you need to be a bloodstock agent is the gift of the gab,and a thick skin.Regarding your point about the 27000 Tally Ho foals - not quite sure what you mean.

dominion, just a roundabout dig at big book sizes that Tally ho specialise in which did give Red Clubs a lot of foals for very few crops

Bushranger a dual group1 winner at 2 which should mark him above the other gimcrack/cornwallis types who are packaged off to stud with nowhere to run at 3

I have a smashing Bushranger foal (out of dual winning half sister by expensive sire to 110 rated sprinter) and just need Bushranger to produce a few good winners to keep the momentum going in what is going to be a crowded market place in December

Keep the faith perry, it's early days. We all get a bit impatient early doors, but the fact is that decent sires are not knocking in the 2yo winners at this time of year. If he's to be helping you out in December it's decent winners he needs and that happen a bit later don't you think.

i did caveat the opening question regarding the early call and appreciate that by July/Aug it could look a lot different but i still think i'd like to see a few more of those that have seen the racetrack running promising runs in maidens and a few less entered in sellers for debuts.
still think he'll be ok but one or two nice types to settle the nerves would be nice

this ain't no game to settle the nerves!!!

It's why I enjoy winter - no racing!

Personally I hope Bushranger does well as I liked his stock, but I have heard quite a few people say they aren't the easiest temperament-wise.

anyone else heard this, or just me?

nice winner for Bushranger at Bath tonight. Im going to stick my neck out and say he'll end up with around 35 winners at the end of the year.

Considering Bushranger covered somewhere in the region of 175 mares in his first season and despite everyone and his wife having one to sell, they still sold like hot cakes.

If he doesn't start banging in the winners and getting some with quality by the end of the season he'll go cold fairly sharpish.

This all seems a bit deja vu, a la Holy Roman Emperor.  I was one of the first to jump on the bandwagon to say what a shambles he was after his first season but he turned it around (to a degree) so even if Bushranger is slightly disappointing there is still hope.

I think 35 is a big ask Wilycayote. I know he has a lot of foals but there are only a limited number of races. If he gets 25 he'll have done well

a few months on, where are we now on Bushranger? still under-performing relative to sales or starting to improve, albeit needing a really good one

well you wouldn't be too happy if you had paid 6 or 7k for a 3rd or 4th season covering. I know I have said this before but 50 or 60% of first season fee is about right. I don't think he's dome too bad but as I said in my previous post this year was always going to be tough for 1st seasoners. There are a lot of established stallions that get precocious stock so the competition is hot.

I think a cut to 4 or 5k is in order for next year and maybe less unless he gets a couple of group performers soon. On that point any thoughts that Dandy Man's fee should increase is also folly. This just goes to show that even with a reasonably successful first season stallion 3 or 4th season fees should be halved.

If we are talking about underperforming stallions should Sea The Stars get a dishonourable mention ?
By:
The Gotchee
When: 04 Sep 13 21:01
Sea the Stars is a different type of sire and it is a bit unfair to be mentioning him at this stage of his stallion career.

Bushranger was expected to get early precocious types but it now transpires that he is a complete dud and there is no way back.
By:
truehoncho
When: 04 Sep 13 22:32
I don't think bushranger is a complete dud just yet, although its not looking good. Sea the Stars is looking a bit dodgy. I know he is going to get better 3yo's but to get classic winners you need to get good 2yo's.
