A friend recently asked my opinion on the stallion choice for a 2013 cover.
His solitary mare (by Satco) has been good to him and of four runners on the track so far the three geldings have won (by Luso and Alderbrook) but a Gamut filly was useless. The stock is highly thought of and two of the winners have been handled by Mullins and Henderson. Its a fairly speedy page and the winners have done well over 2m.
His tentative choice is Milan and I must confess I have no great expertise in this area.
Would anyone have a view on the unproven Yeats who would be a fairly hunchy, indulgent choice of mine if I had a nice dual-purpose winning mare. One of the most inspired coverings I ever noted was covering the stamina-laden Breyani (by Commance Run) with a winning miler (Tirol) to produce a Guineas winner in Tarascon-not greatly relevant but hopefully you get my drift.
Any advice appreciated.

I take it today was a good day for your friend!!I would not disagree with Milan but I would be reluctant to use an unproven sire such as Yeats for a mare with black type progeny.
If she is a fertile mare Robin de Champs would be a top end option but he can have trouble getting mares in foal.They are seriously popular at the sales.

My number one NH stallion would be Midnight Legend. He gets good-looking stock with a willing attitude and has done well with many of his bumper runners so they have plenty of speed over 2m. Alan King, to mention just one decent trainer, is a fan of ML's stock.
I would agree about Midnight Legend but I don't think the breeder will be crossing the Irish Sea to avail of him!!

In that case I'd look at Winged Love. Sire of a top 2-miler in Twist Magic, also sire of Hunt Ball, Boston Angel, Cannington Brook, Magnanimity.

what about Westerner? I think he could be the type to get a speedt 2 miler, he gets flat winners.
I'd have a serious look at Ballyhane's Arakan,the jump boys are keen on him and getting keener too!Court Cave's another to have a look at,he's at Boardsmill Stud in Meath.He gets good sorts,he's a un-raced full bro' to Beat Hollow who looks very promising gets very decent runners.
I agree with both of those Prima, although of the two (and they're both simarlarly priced) I prefer Court Cave, he looks more likely to produce a classier type. Am still amazed that Arakan managed to cover 239 mares last year, and even allowing for trading at his advertised fee of €3500, he's turning into a nice little earner for Joe.
Yes Johnny I'd agree with that,I've always liked Court Cave as an individual he's a really good sort.I've seen Beat Hollow many times he's also a great sort,but for me in the game their both in now Court Cave perhaps has more scope.Another stallion in a similar fee range who again is showing promise in the jumps field is former INS sire Jeremy.He's another to give some thought too.I remember a thread on this forum years ago that was a great read it was titled 'I skate where the pucks going to be rather than where it is'it was created by the now late 'gorgesgeorge' he gave a good insight as to how commercial breeders should always look forward to the markets instead of just relying on what's sought after right now.These 3 sires could perhaps be viewed as where the puck will be.Would you agree?
Not my territory as you all know. However I did notice a few months ago when Jeremy had the 2nd and 3rd in a Gr2 juvenile hurdle.
I thought at the time that any thoughts of pursuing a flat career for him were dead in the water from that moment on. As a big athletic horse I would prefer him to Arakan and he has a nice stout damline for his new job.
Most importantly in the NH game, your Crystal Ball has to be on fire. It's hard enough predicting where the puck's going to when it's been struck 2 years previously in the Flat game. Add another 2 years for the jumps boys and,

a little update: as Tolmi perspicaciously observed, the page is improving all the time and the latest hope us that a certain top class claimer might be on board for its next outing! Its all about having the popular store and the two trainers to have handled the stock are buyers years in advance of running-a pretty nifty situation to be in.
A pinhooker i hugely respect (he has the perennial Midas Touch) has bought a few scorpions lately and, interestingly, decided to buy some young stores recently as he felt the flat foal market was just too expensive. Longer investment turnaround but he's rarely wrong and his vision will be tested potm. I'll post the covering sire when its been finally decided.

I would not consider myself a real "judge" but a lot of the Scorpions I have seen at the sales are good looking athletic racy types.
Ronnie O'Neill has made Stowaway from very unpromising mares. From my study of his winning progeny O'Neill hoovered up a lot of cheap mares a number of years back and struck gold. His success, compared to a failure like Darsi, is remarkable.

I hope she gets in foal as I think the sire can have difficulties in that regard.It might take a couple of visits.That said a nice colt foal would be very valuable so I hope it turns out well.As for commission I reserve the right to introduce myself to the breeder and claim a free drink if I happen to be at the sale when the progeny goes under the hammer!!
As Tolmi has just said, please keep the thread updated regarding whether she keeps RA. I am looking at using him this year. The only reservation I have is that she isn't due to foal this time round until 2nd May so ideally she would want to getting in foal with her first service at the end of May (all dependent on everything going well with this years foal!)
Unfortunately the mare came up empty at 21 days. Head scratching time!
Bad luck RA,hindsight a wonderful thing I know but Tolmis'comments on the stallion difficulty maybe an element in the cause/your mare being barren the previous time,worrying,again bad luck
Only a small sample on RP site but Malinas (GER) has a very impressive % NH record
I saw Malinas at the stallion parade at Cheltenham last year - I thought he was a stunner and he had a Festival winner in Medinas.
If he won't travel then it has to be Milan. A Milan/Satco combination screams four miles let alone three. I've posted on another thread that Milan's first four runners over 3.5 miles plus in the UK have produced 2 winners and 2 placed horses. He will be the new Roselier, of that I have no doubt with perhaps more emphasis on quality.
Had travel been an option then it would, without a shadow of a doubt, be a choice of two. Saint Des Saints or Laveron. Both were National Hunt horses in their own right in France, the latter with Doumen and both are producing some tough, stout and very likeable horses. Macaire rates Saint Des Saints progeny very highly. There aren't many better judges around.
