Has anyone got any views on lot 296 as a potential broodmare?
The catalogue seems to be full of impeccably bred unraced 3 year old fillies from Juddmonte and Darley. However I bought one of them a few years ago and the market doesn’t appear to be to impressed with her offspring at all, so maybe I need to try another tack.
296 is a 2 year old winner herself and the first and second dams have produced the winners of over 50 races between them. It just seems to me that this is the type of Mare that if mated with some cheap speed would produce tough, precocious, winning sprinters at a certain level. Which it appears is what the market wants.
I doubt she will cost much so is there a downside?

I'd need to see her re size and front leg conformation. I like sprint handicappers to breed up - fillies that have run many times, won a few and retired sound after minimum three seasons are the kind of template I look for and used to be cheap but not so much even these days!

She's bad winded, not very talented and has a page which is almost totally devoid of class.

If your Darley/Juddmonte cast off has failed you I imagine you are not blaming her page but the fact that she hasn't produced the individual that the market wants.
I agree that a relatively light page can still offer a shot at a good sale if the individual produced ticks every other box, but a lot of light pages are that way for a reason. They aren't producing class and the offspring look that way too, making a good sale a real shot in the dark.
I personally would be looking for more than that filly on pedigree if I had any sort of budget atall. What is your budget and what is your stud fee budget? I would try and skew the balance back to a better mare and a lesser nomination.

P.S. I become less and less inclined to spend proper money on a mare/filly as along with any other age group or potential prospect in this game, the odds are always pretty ropey and I've lost plenty over the years by sticking my neck out and sometimes been more successful by keeping it cheap.
