Hi Folks,
Thought I would tap into the font of knowledge that is the B&B forum with this question.i could get I suspect for little money a very well bred yearling from a top notch commercial stud. The slight negative as I knew from them selling this yearling is that this fellow is a Rig and they for obvious reasons need to get it off the premises as soon as possible. i have spoken to the Stud Groom who seemed a genuinely nice chap who gave me this info along with him being slightly light of bone, but as I say they are a top notch operation and I guess like the rest of you fellas are always looking for perfection in what they produce. I have no worries on the breeding side of the yearling and I assume the first thing required would be a gelding op.The groom was telling me he had lunged etc perfectly well but would occasionally be fractious(presumably feeling the testicle inside).i am only interested in the racing side for him but would ask if any of you guys have had similar situations and what was the possible outcome on the racing side of your produce  subsequently.

Many Thanks and well done Pot M for your recent successes!!

Thanks Midas7. I would be a tad worried about this scenario. If it was such a nice prospect why didn't they geld it and sell it as a gelding? I have no experience of this but I would want to see it gelded pretty pronto so it doesn't develop a negative attitude due to the discomfort. Can we be sure that the lungeing incidents are testicle releted?
Obviously you are looking at a decent expense to do the op. and depending how high it is you could be looking at plentyof dosh.
Best case scenario is of course a horse that causes you to gnash your teeth as it won't be eligible for the Derby!
Worst case and you are buying many problems. It's all a question of trust I suppose.

Hi Pot M,

Thanks for the reply,I suppose like everything else involved in this wonderful sport of ours its all about luck and trust,I already knew that the fellow had been entered in Book 2 at Tatts but due to the problem with the testicle etc they withdrew. They had tried various medications to get the offending testicle to drop without success. My trainer today has spoken to his vet and explained the situation ref castration and was quoted £500 approx for the conventional surgery required in a controlled environment .

I would expect to pay no more than £1000 for this chappy and I would have thought with all the costs involved etc transportation/breaking/a few months training to see if there was anything there, the whole exercise would be approx £7000-£8000,the question I suppose is it worthwhile to have a pop and see what happens or does the risks involved outweigh any potential benefits. As I say the page is strong (middledistance on flat with future hurdling?) which is fine by me, I suspect that at the level this stud operate this particular episode with this chap will be put down as a loss and to move on to the next project, they are large and generally very succesful in what they do!! Any other comments from forumites would be much appreciated!!

I would probably take the risk if he were mine.  BUT I would make sure hes insured pre-operation.  Worst case scenario there being a serious underlying problem with the undescended testicle and the op went badly wrong.

Hi LM,

I take your point about the operation but you have to remember that the purchase cost would be minimal to offset against insurance and I'M a born gambler anyway so I'd take the chance.
