My Sinndar foal, who I had been hoping to attempt to sell at the November sales, got a foot injury and went lame fir a few days. He had been doing very well but now appears to have lost quite a bit of weight since, any tips on how to fatten him up a bit again, maybe it'll happen naturally now he's recovered?

Ovalu, I find myself in slightly the same boat right now with a foal who has always looked good having gone a bit backward.

I put it down to 'one of those things' and with a Sinndar foal I imagine it could be an occupational hazard!

Obviously we need to be reasonably careful with a fast growing foal and I am not a fan of changing my normal system. I would feed such a foal at the upper levels of what I am comfortable with and hope that all will come good again in due course.

I really don't think that any type of 'booster' would remotely guarantee any results and is more likely used as a sap to an impatient owner or 'we can't just sit there' type. I think such measures stand more chance of causing a problem than solving one.

I'll be interested to hear from the opposite camp but my advice would be to sit tight.

I would have thought relatively sudden weight loss for a short while with a known and resolved cause shouldn't be too much of a worry. A lot of it may be hydration related which will easily hollow them. I would aim for a steady correction towards target date but it might improve naturally a fair bit quicker. How long since weaning?

Worm it and feed it more (we tend towards small amounts of high cal stuff - in our case Saracen Stamm).  All very case specific though.  Not sure why a few days lame should have knocked him back that much - if it was that sudden I'd prob also keep eye of water intake & give him a vit. lick.  As PotM alludes too he might just be growing and just looks a bit scrawny at the mo - ages to go though.

BTW if hes not weaned yet then maybe mums milks gone / little calories.  GL

Thanks for all the help guys, I wont panic yet, maybe he is stretching out a bit at the same time, I think i'm seeing a lot more ribs than before his setback but hopefully he'll beef up again, he's not weaned yet by the way

ask your local feed merchant to make you up some calf mixture without the copper and add your own minerals to it.
and add some lamb milk replacer ,not calf because the lamb milk does not contain copper.
