Has now had 4 winners of the Epsom Derby. I THINK only 3 other sires have equalled that, the last being Blandford in the 1920s and 30s. If I am right he must have at least 3 more crops to get the outright record. I think they may be quite small ones though.

Expect that the mares he was sent in his last years were top quality , so every chance of yet another Derby winner by Montjeu
Report salmon spray June 2, 2012 9:38 PM BST
That will certainly be true, but I am sure I have read he didn't get as many foals as you would expect for a couple of years or so. Not sure if he wasn't well for some time or had fertility issues.

Is it strange that Galileo being a 1m2f -1m4f horse, that his 2 top rated offspring are both milers ?
Report salmon spray June 4, 2012 10:12 AM BST
Montjeu was always going to get stayers. His damside was packed with stamina. Galileo was not quite so stoutly-bred but was a genuine 12f horse. He got beaten in his last two races when they put him back to 10f ( ironically to try and get a Grp 1 win at that distance to enhance his stud value ). Apart from Frankel,I presume you mean Rip Van Winkle, who did win over 10f,but you could make a case for him being best at a mile. I personally think Frankel will get 10f if we ever see him at that distance. BUT the damsire of both those were sprinters. So was the damsire of New Approach, whom I would rate higher than Rip Van Winkle, and he of course did stay 12f. Most Galileos do in fact stay that far but he does seem capable of getting slightly speedier more precocious types than Montjeu and because of that I would be surprised if he doesn't turn out to be the more successful sire of sires. He needs another 3 to equal Montjeu's Derby record though.

Yes RVW won the Sussex and was 2nd in the race the year after so i call him a miler, although he did get 10f. Galileo gets horses that can win over shorter distances than Montjeu, but when it comes to the 3yo colts for the Derby ( apart from New Approach ). The Galileos seem to lack that turn off foot , which is so evident in the Montjeu Derby winners.

Talking about Montjeu colts for next years Derby, O Brien only has a few Montjeus entered in the Grp 1 National Stakes on pedigree the best maybe Everglades Island, out of Hula Angel ( Irish 1000 Guineas winner ). He does however have alot of Galileos sons entered in the National Stakes, one  called Sir Walter Scott , is a half brother to Frozen Fire.

20+ Montjeus entered in next years Derby,Push I wouldnt use the National Stakes as a guide for Montjeu I think in all my years going to it I never seen one of his offspring run in it. Montjeu mightnt have got the numbers last few seasons but he still got the class mares.

jmc27 , you are dead right about the National Stakes, but if Aiden thinks they are any good he would give them an entry for the race. But the RPTrophy is the race to look out for.
Apart from the French horse, all the Montjeus won the RPT before going on to win the Derby.

Camelot was an exception not the rule. Rarely do you see one out in July and even rareer a good one at that.

Did hear today Hurricane Run is being outed, standing next year in Germany.personally that's not surprising news.
Report potentialmillionaire June 5, 2012 9:14 PM BST
That would make good sense. he's a useful sire but he has a smashing 'German' profile and I would imagine he could be a useful earner over there. Not too far away if anyone simply has to use him or in case a few superstars turn up in the next season or two.

With Motivator having the odd moment and certainly not proving a useless stallion like he once looked, there should still be scope for enough goodwill to 'produce' a Montjeu stallion when one that has the intrinsic merit comes along.

Authorized lads?? any view on that Montjeu

Until Camelot came along about the best son of Montjeu, not a write off if he's going to do it he will have to do it the hard way.His stock don't look the most precocious sorts and for me standing with Darley is a bit of a disadvantage to his long term success as they seem to use fairly stout staying mares, mares like that are never going to help a young stallion off the commercial blocks. They seem to do that with theirs too often really.
Motivator might just make up into a useful stallion as he is enjoying a little bit of a renaissance lets hope he can go on and I'd like to see a few half decent colts emerging. He's a bit like Authorized in so much as the studs they both stand at have useful mares but not the sort who will offer them the early help both need to maintain popularity, that's where Coolmore hold all the aces with their purely commercial outlook.

Well Authorized has had a better start than his contempories Lawman Excellent Art and Teofilo this season so it is too early to say he is a no goer. That's not going to stop a lot of people thinking it though!

He has a late maturing pedigree and a late maturing, though quite nice example of, type of conformation. So he may well look better once his first 4yos have run. That won't help his chances though and he has had enough good mates for us to judge reasonably early his position in the grand scheme of things.

He started off at £25000 a pop so with only 4 horses having made it to a Racing Post rating of 90 or more so far I'd be pretty amazed if we think he ever justified that sort of support.
