I noticed this, this week at Goffs is it just me but do others think its not really acceptable to have foals of just 2 days old in the sale ring,or mares only days away from foaling going under the hammer.
I think if you have a mare so close and a foal so young you should accept you can't sell them through the sale ring until later in the year.
I think we need to be realistic enough to understand that if we didn't sell in Nov/Dec we have missed our chance until the following summer.

Tattersalls rules for Feb don't allow any foals, or mares with service dates before April something or other do they. I wish I could remember the date because it always strikes me a little over cautious.

We've all got pretty heavily pregnant mares who could skip through the process and some others you want to wrap in cotton wool from some time before.

I looked at the mare with the Ripvanwinkle foal at foot and both mare (maiden) and foal seemed to be taking it all really well.

There was a mare and foal that I saw in the pre parade ring and the foal was being led with a normal if rather large lead rein but they hadn't bothered to take the blue rope catching dangler off it - and there it was dangling nearly down to its' knees! Old school Irish farmer/breeder at it's worst/most charming (delete as appropriate)!

I think though I'm with the poster here. Some sort of rule would probably be wise.

Off the top of my head I too think Tatt's have the April rule when selling in-foal mares at Feb sale. Some sort of rule would indeed be wise, personally I'd like to see the same Tatt's rule implemented at Goffs.

the RSPCA could have a field day. it needs to stop, the industry has had enough bad press.

I thoroughly agree with you PD.An unacceptable practice that should be stopped immediately.

Steady up lads nothing's being starved, thrashed or neglected!

It does make for uncomfortable viewing though and a kinder initiative is called for perhaps.

I wonder if there's anyone on here with any influence. . . Wink

I wonder too!Of course these are just are own individual thoughts and observations.........but I wonder if this topic might come up in future discussions with connections.Wink

A little canape here, a glass of fizzy there, let's sometimes it's time well spent.

I'm not likely to make much difference with Goffs over a cheese sarnie and a Brown Ale!

I might have a crack at Sarkozy and Merkel instead. . .

Lets hope things may change for the better then time will tell,as for Sarkozy and Merkel I'll leave those two for you!Had any foals born yet?Or are you still waiting.
Report potentialmillionaire February 18, 2012 9:25 PM GMT
Still waiting. 12 monther on Wednesday and I reckon she'll make that and a bit more! Bl00dy great lump. And the annoying thing, super long pregnancies don't equate to colts in her case!

About to go to bed as a cover in Nmkt at 8 in the morning equates to a horrendously early start. Still it's nice to have a go as although Jan foals are a pain to have around, you soon start losing time with these mares don't you.

Have you Prima, or anyone else for that matter, heard much tittle tattle on which 1st season stallions are represented by a multitude of pigeon catching 2yo's yet?
Report Prima Donna February 18, 2012 9:43 PM GMT
I'll let you get to bed then as your trip sounds far more important than waffling on to me,good luck for tomorrow then.Nothing really spoken about seriously yet except the usual praise about certain good sorts by none other than surprise surprise Duke of Marmalade.........that no doubt is from the PR department hoping to flog a few early nominations, sounds all to familiar to last years Dylan Thomas, the year before Holy Roman Emperor the year before that Footstepsinthesand..........you get my drift.Mind you I have heard a trainer in Lambourne has a nice colt who is working well by Assertive. But its early yet, anyway have a great day tomorrow.Prima.

Did you get the mare covered? And has the other one foaled yet?
Report potentialmillionaire February 23, 2012 3:30 PM GMT
Been a bit busy Prima, and my god does it not suit me!

Always it all comes a bit fast and furious when you've got a few things on and then I succumbed to a bit of man flu. Anyway I did get my mare covered but as it was taking 1/2 an hour to load in the middle of the night resulting in a flat battery and then it turns out part of the A14 was closed, well I thought of you and wondered about boarding if you hadn't got it right after all. Cry

Breaking every speed limit though I got there a little over 20 minutes late and didn't hold them up as it was a busy morning so relieved to have that done and dusted!

My mare has foaled and I reckon that going public with a moan on the Betfair site is definitely the way ahead. Having predicted a foaling day and a filly, the mare managed to come in a little under that and with a bay colt. Result!

I was looking through my Return of Mares supplement the other day to have the fact that I had no domestic winners last year rammed down my throat - in my defence I had 2 stakes horses abroad!
Anyway, always an illuminating publication particularly how unsuccessful some of the larger money throwing organisations are. A most laudible result for some though Wink

Glad you got there in the end and managed to get her covered, after your nightmare journey it must of been a relief. On top of that feeling unwell.........man flu I know that feeling! And well done for your stakes winners and getting a colt its a great start, like you it started off with us like that but now it seems we've got a dose of filly's.Had one today in fact by French based Naaqoos I'm told she's a quality sort, another by Arcano and yet another filly by GalileoShockedcan you send me some luck please.
I can see why people walk in but also and after reading your post it all seems a lot of faffing around to me are the savings really worth it?Oh yes the last little bit........I'll take that as a complimentCoolGrin
Report potentialmillionaire February 23, 2012 10:28 PM GMT
I'll let you into a secret Prima, if you need to worry about the sex of a Galileo - you've over covered Grin

Naaqoos and Arcano level though and it does seriously affect your margins though doesn't it. Mind you, if you've followed your mantra and under covered with a cheaper type I'm sure you'll wing it. As I guess you have a few more mares than me it must be endlessly fascinating to find out exactly which foals turn up trumps and just exactly how often it's not the obvious. I suppose I experienced that myself in no uncertain terms last year!

I'm sure it'll be colts from here on in. And yes a compliment, fabulous stakes ratio!!
