Winner of the 1986 Epsom Derby beating Dancing Brave, was put down on Tuesday because of old age ailments. Shahrastani winner of the 1986 Derby held off a fast-finishing Dancing Brave at Epsom to record a half-length victory under Walter Swinburn for the Aga Khan and Sir Michael Stoute.
He had an eight-length victory in the Irish Derby before finishing fourth behind Dancing Brave in the King George VI Stakes. He ended his career by finishing fourth in the Arc.
At the end of his three-year-old campaign, the horse was syndicated to stand at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky. However, by 1992, he was back in Europe at Ballymany Stud and was sold three years later to stand in Japan.
After his stint in the Far East he returned to Clashmore Stud in Ireland as a dual-purpose sire before moving across the Irish Sea to stand at Walton Fields.
In all, he is the sire of 13 black-type winners including Spanish Group 1 winner Dariyoun and French Group 2 winner Rifapour as well as high-class juvenile hurdler Zabadi.
He is also the broodmare sire of Irish Derby and King George hero Alamshar and Prix de la Foret winner Caradak.
Bred in the Kentucky by the Aga Khan, Shahrastani was out of the triple-winning Thatch mare Shademah, also the granddam of Group 3 winner Crimson Tide.
