Henry Beeby, chief executive of Goffs, said the firm was left exposed because the racehorse industry operated largely on credit and goodwill.

‘‘We guarantee to pay our vendors after 35 days, whether we’ve been paid or not,’’ he said. ‘‘We got to the stage where we were owed a huge amount of money.’’

I presume people did bid for lots and then did renage on the settlement

Goffs and Tatts operated different business models. You can tell now which one was better!

Earlier this year TATTERSALLS has voiced support for a proposal that would see horses who had not been paid for barred from racing until the debt was settled.

Sales companies would have the power to withhold the certificate if the horse had not been paid for, unlike passports, which have to accompany horses at all times.

Martin Donohoe’s Goresbridge Sales has also been affected by its share of bad debt but, while Donohoe welcomes the recent proposal, he feels more is needed to cure the problem.

“Anything like this is a help and without doubt we would get behind it,” he said. “But the problem arises when the horse is taken home, tried and found to be no good. Then you still might not be paid.
“Now we are trying to keep credit to a strict minimum – we are a horse sales company, not a bank.”

175 yearlings sold from 209 offered for total sales of €10,686,000 euros.
The clearance rate improved from 76.1% in 2010 to 83.7% at this year’s opening session,
On the downside the average price was down by 5.9% to  €61,603
TYhe median down by 16% to €42,000.

The pricey one to which I think you refer Prima, didn't seem out of the way for a nice filly. After all, the cross is pretty current!

A cheaper one by a current stallion has it's picture on the website. Now that does look a runner - just suffering for it's date perhaps - But I can see that one being your next stakes horse, like a recent one from the Miswaki sireline that is currently serving you  pretty well [;)]

Remember I've a little history with the Slick'n'Smooth operation - though longer ago than I care to remember One day, when we have that mythical Champagne at Tatts, you can explain  what the Pseudonym's stand for!

When I had a couple of fillies in training a few years ago - and I'll never be able to afford it again! - my trainer, a ridiculously patient type I admit, said they all even up by June of their 2yo season anyway. Certainly I can't see why it can make much difference to anything but their appearance at the sales. If it does put trainers/agents off though I would certainly have it as a plus point as an angle to upping the value for money stakes!

For well over ayear now iv been following ye 2 discuss the industry with great interest and i have loved the side story of trying to figure out who is who.  Would have liked this to go further as iv thought prima was1 of 3 peolpe. Normally i would follow up potm's massive clue but im geting readyfor paris in the morning!! Very excited as iv been saying il gotothe ar  for past 5 years.

Prima, My oldest friend in the game worked for S&S 'abroad' and a family member of S&S's at home at the time we were doing the rounds as you do when you start out. We were very thick and I worked at a stud in the U.S where S&S boarded stock so that's why I perhaps have a history!

I thought over all trade was good, we where not going to be getting top prices for what we had there but we did get nice prices for what we had. We had more vetting than usual no complaints though as it meant there where many interested. The Dukes where a poor bunch overall. The Acclamations i saw where not as good as the prices showed so maybe its his form at the moment which is good as we have one to sell yet. I thought myself that Holy Roman Emperor had some nice ones there that should have gone more

Not sure who she will go to yet Rip Van,but as you seem to know he does get plenty of them but I'd guess she will.I too didn't think it was such a poor trade.

I agree with those points esp' about having sensible prices in your head,to my mind it was a realistic trade buyers had a chance of getting real value.Most people seemed happy enough with their returns we certainly were.I also thought that from what I could see the Dukes stock looked pretty poor I didn't see one that I really liked,I do think Coolmore need to get real with their fee's for next year as it is right now they have some very expensive moderate sires on their hands.
