Almost 670 horses will go under the hammer at Goffs annual Orby sale of yearlings from September 27 to 29.
Last years,top lot a filly (half-sister to 1m/9f Group winner Echo Of Light, very useful 9f-1m4f winner Akarem and 1m/9f winner Multazem; dam 1m4f winner, sister to top-class 1m-1m4f filly Salsabil......still unnamed ) by Dubawi ex Spirit of Tara was bought by Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum of Dubai for Eu 950,000.
Goffs has made provisions for more than Eu 7 million in ‘doubtful’ debts in the last two years, leaving the firm with a loss of e6.4 million last year.
The company raised e7.5 million by selling most of its stake in a French auction house, Arqana, to the AgaKhan.

Thanks for that Airmail.I knew about the 35 days thing having bought at DBS but I assume that once you bid and win that you have a legal obligation to pay in full subject to vetting etc. Could it be that there recovery process is maybe not robust enough, I'm just guessing though!!

Henry Beeby, chief executive of Goffs, said the 145-year-old firm was taking a "stronger line" in terms of issuing credit to buyers. "Like all businesses, everyone was caught by the speed and depth of the downturn," he said.
"Where people work with us, we will work with them, where people try to walk away, we will go after them," Mr Beeby said. He added that the 'bad debtors' were a wide mix of people including those involved in building and development.
"We have a number of cases in the legal process at the moment."
The total value of sales at goffs has dropped from €127m in 2007 to €45m last year.

Earlier this year TATTERSALLS has voiced support for a proposal that would see horses who had not been paid for barred from racing until the debt was settled.

I thought he been very disappointing so far. Considering all the hype, the quality of stock that was all the rave at the sales last year he been very poor.

A 9.8% increase in total sales and an improved clearance rate.
175 yearlings sold from 209 offered for total sales of €10,686,000 euros.
The clearance rate improved from 76.1% in 2010 to 83.7% at this year’s opening session,
On the downside the average price was down by 5.9% to €61,603
TYhe median down by 16% to €42,000.

I wasn't disappointed with the prices really,I'd say they were getting real value.You could take the view that recently we have 'over' valued our stock.Plenty of us made money but on a lot of them the margins were not so good I'd guess.
Can't help but think buyers were cold on the Coolmore sires,its no wonder the mighty are trying to hold out the olive branch hand........a little anyway.Nice ones sold and some seemed to make more than expected,we got a few one was imo a touch expensive as the stallion has done just about enough but as we were saying on the first season sires table the other day he's not a write off and as he got better with age so his stock may do the same,certainly he sold overall better than I was expecting.We say it year in year out but I do think ALL stallion fee's need to come down.

The pricey one to which I think you refer Prima, didn't seem out of the way for a nice filly. After all, the cross is pretty current!
A cheaper one by a current stallion has it's picture on the website. Now that does look a runner - just suffering for it's date perhaps - But I can see that one being your next stakes horse, like a recent one from the Miswaki sireline that is currently serving you pretty well [;)]

When I had a couple of fillies in training a few years ago - and I'll never be able to afford it again! - my trainer, a ridiculously patient type I admit, said they all even up by June of their 2yo season anyway. Certainly I can't see why it can make much difference to anything but their appearance at the sales. If it does put trainers/agents off though I would certainly have it as a plus point as an angle to upping the value for money stakes!

For well over ayear now iv been following ye 2 discuss the industry with great interest and i have loved the side story of trying to figure out who is who. Would have liked this to go further as iv thought prima was1 of 3 peolpe. Normally i would follow up potm's massive clue but im geting readyfor paris in the morning!! Very excited as iv been saying il gotothe ar for past 5 years.

Prima, My oldest friend in the game worked for S&S 'abroad' and a family member of S&S's at home at the time we were doing the rounds as you do when you start out. We were very thick and I worked at a stud in the U.S where S&S boarded stock so that's why I perhaps have a history!

I thought over all trade was good, we where not going to be getting top prices for what we had there but we did get nice prices for what we had. We had more vetting than usual no complaints though as it meant there where many interested. The Dukes where a poor bunch overall. The Acclamations i saw where not as good as the prices showed so maybe its his form at the moment which is good as we have one to sell yet. I thought myself that Holy Roman Emperor had some nice ones there that should have gone more

Not sure who she will go to yet Rip Van,but as you seem to know he does get plenty of them but I'd guess she will.I too didn't think it was such a poor trade.
I thought it was good. If you wanted to sell there was a buyer there and a reasonable price was got. We didn't make a profit on them all but others covered theres. We had sensible prices in our head and they weren't far off what we got which was good
I agree with those points esp' about having sensible prices in your head,to my mind it was a realistic trade buyers had a chance of getting real value.Most people seemed happy enough with their returns we certainly were.I also thought that from what I could see the Dukes stock looked pretty poor I didn't see one that I really liked,I do think Coolmore need to get real with their fee's for next year as it is right now they have some very expensive moderate sires on their hands.

Were his stock patchy or were they stamped but ordinary? Patchy is a problem but I always think that if well stamped they can still come up trumps. Like so many of the Roberto clan for instance.
