I've got a Night Shift mare that we are looking to cover for the first time. I've drawn up a shortlist of, Bahamian Bounty, Compton Place and Royal Applause, I would be grateful of some opinions. Thanks

Apologies if I am teaching you to suck eggs Petski, but you may not know of an alomost uncanny nick with Night Shift mares on Compton Place. He's had bags of winners on this line, but the amazing thing is how good they are on just this one cross, examples being;
Passified - Gr 2 winner Pleasure Place - Multiple Gr 3 winner Shifting Place - 2yo Gr 3 winner Champion Place - Gr 3 winner Malapropism - winner of 14 races Powerful Speed - Listed Casual Glimpse - Hannon thought alot of last year e.t.c. Plenty of the commercial guys also know about the NShift x CPlace nick, so if you got a nice looking foal you'd have a real sales prospect. hope thats of use. |

Petski. Royal Applause is full is he not? Bahamian Bounty might be too?
It's perhaps a good job the Compton Place / Night Shift mare X is so potent! |

I spoke to all 3 studs yesterday, all are available at the moment although BB and RA are filling up. Wily, I am aware of the CP x Night shift nick, I just wondered if commercially either of the other 2 would be a better option.

Historically of the 3 Royal Applause has been the most commercial of these. Recently perhaps Bahamian Bounty has been the most solid commercially. I would say that Compton is the trickiest, but he remains a useful foal sale stallion.
Do some homework on the quality and size of the books you are following, Petski, as all of these horses are long in the tooth and it will probably be much about who currently has a good runner or two when you come to sell. I think Compton Place really is the weakest of the 3, but I don't think there is enough in it to dissuade me from sending a maiden Night Shift mare there. It's a great cross and you must try to breed a runner first and foremost. As you are just considering these 3 hardy annuals - and not drawn to something younger and sexier - then you must be giving plenty of weight to this I guess. |

I agree with the comments from potentialmillionaire,all of these sires that you are considering are pretty much on the downhill slope commercially imo headed by Compton Place.
Your mare we shall assume being by Nightshift is a good looking sort have you thought about Bahamian Bounty's son Pastoral Pursuits?This young stallion looks sure to step into his fathers shoes,or have you thought about Danehill Dancers son Monsieur Bond who has done well and is available at a very modest fee,both of these can and imo would offer you a good chance of a return on your outlay.I think you want a 'proven' sire on your mare that's what it sounds like to me and yes I see your point but if you plan to sell try going for an emerging stallion rather than one who is starting now to look a touch old hat as in a couple of years time he may be as cold as yesterday's potatoes |

Ive had a look at the foal averages from Tatts December. Its amazing how close they are;
Compton Place average £25,400 Bahamian Bounty average £24,900 Royal Applause average £26,000 Cosidering the fees of each stallion and the nick with NShift mares, looks like CPlace could edge it with your mare Petski. Let us know how you get on. |

What is this theoretical "nick" with CP and NS. I have looked at the reality, and theoretical probabilities of the two and there is little difference. Equally, the sample size of CP over NS is in the thirties.Therefore, it is far too small to make a judgement. However, were there a judgement to be made it would be that the cross is on par with the average. |

your right, it is a relatively small sample. But, from 26 runners on the CP x NS cross;
This has produced 5 individual stakes winners (19.23%) and has produced 8 horses rated 95+ (30.76%). Most of these achieving high ratings as 2 year olds. - it might not be ground breaking stuff, but I'd be very happy to be breeding with that success rate for the rest of my life. |
