Thought about breeding my mare, who is a daughter of Green Desert, to Aqlaam (grandson of Green Desert) but thought better of it. The potential offspring would have been inbred 2 x 3.
What level of inbreeding is generally considered acceptable and does anyone have any stats to suggest how successful inbreeding has been to Green Desert or other crosses?
I don't find these sort of stats very easy to come across Wilycayote. But then I am both poor and tightfisted so don't know if they are out there at a price.
People don't seem to have a problem with 3x3 do they and I've been backed into that corner only once and bred a winner who sold well too. (N.D., surprise surprise) It's not something I really like though and my best horses have been pretty outcrossy.
Could it be though that my mares are not good enough to bring much to the mix and they need some new 'blood' to produce a nice horse? If there is not anything of much note to 'reinforce' then perhaps that explains my experience.
I certainly wouldn't discount a level of inbreeding if the mare and stallion involved had few similarities as I assume (rightly or wrongly) that the protagonists have received different genetic pairings along the way.
I know when Prima Donna returns from his winter at Sandy Lane he will blame Rainbow Quest for Aqlaam's soundness problems so perhaps a double dose of Green Desert might not have implications on that front. Much as I am happy to agree with him on that front, I still would perhaps be looking at pretty robust immediate parentage with such a close genetic match.

as a rule of thumb, a coefficient of inbreeding percentage of over 5% used to be considered too much (you can check this using the hypo mating on pedigree query)
They sent Lush Lashes to Sea the Stars which is 2*3 to Urban Sea, but it seems more popular for close inbreeding to top class mares via half brothers/close cousins

That must have been Jim Bolger who decided to inbreed Lush Lashes and he's supposed to be an expert in genetics so if its good enough for him then perhaps I should crack on.
On the other hand, it might just give agents one more reason to overlook the resulting offspring at the sales, especially as my mare is not quite in the Lush Lashes bracket!!

My main concern crossing so close to Green Desert would be that I'd end up with a rat big enough only for Polo, and yes Pot M I do blame Rainbow Quest for the unsoundness with Aqlaam............who else could make him so fragile? And your right again we have been on holiday and did spend some time at Sandy Lane it was great to get away, hope you had a fantastic Christmas and sorted out your 2011 nominations and happy new year to you all!

Really good to have you back Prima, and once again I bow to your great judgement, in getting the hell outta here through the dreadful weather.
Which just leaves me in a right pickle - if I can make the right guess from the worlds destinations on your holiday venue, then why the hell can't I make the right call on a few stallion nominations?
Having spoken to Darley before Christmas and found out their (sometimes surprisingly) full stallions at that point I was able to put off decisions as I'm not chasing the real popular guys it appears, but I have just started properly this afternoon.
It does seem that plenty of folk are ploughing on regardless despite heavy losses suffered by all to some extent or another.

Can you tell me who you are thinking of?Speaking to one well known agent in NMKT-on-Sea he told me that Paco Boy won't be that popular, breeders will use him hoping Hannon buys the stock, surprisingly he said that Captain Gerrard's stock are going to be popular. Word is he is expected to'make it',I am thinking of Multiplex for a cheapish mare. Are you going to Tatt's Feb sale? He will be there.

Bless the agents Prima. They never stop talking b=llocks do they. At the coal face, the sheep will be buying the same as everyone else and we both know that fashion in the covering shed may bear no relation to what's trendy come 1st crop time.
Great looking Paco Boy foals versus average unstamped Cpt Gerrard foals - say - now ofcourse they'll plump for the Captain Gerrard option!
I'm not braving any 'wrong year' stallions I don't think (Multiplex) as I am awaiting a similar foal later this month and it's looking like I got it wrong - you know who - so I'm feeling a bit fragile!
Showcasing looks most likely for the cheap 1st season job for me and whilst I wouldn't implicitly trust him on a mare a bit short on scope I reckon you could just about fit him on anything else you fancy.
As usual though it's a battle with money v compatibility so the others are up in the air. Paco Boy not likely though!

I had a Halling horse out of a Green Desert mare and he was a disease (Cheveley bred). Beautiful looking, performed on the gallops. On the racecourse he was copmpletely tripless and his wind was rotten.
